In late December 2022, illustrator Ben Moran said r/Art removed his painting A Muse in Warzone and permanently banned him because moderators believed it looked AI-generated. Moran said he made it in Photoshop and offered process files, but an anonymous moderator reportedly rejected the appeal based on the image’s appearance. Contemporary reports document the dispute; they do not establish whether the ban was later reversed.
Why was Ben Moran banned from r/Art?
Moran posted A Muse in Warzone to Reddit’s r/Art in late December 2022. The image depicts Elaine, a character from the fantasy series Beneath the Dragoneye Moons. PC Gamer reported that moderators removed it under the subreddit’s rule against “memes, AI, filters, or other low quality work,” then permanently banned Moran. PC Gamer and Hyperallergic covered the incident in January 2023.
Artnet News reported that the piece was a commissioned book cover, created by reworking an earlier draft from a studio colleague, and that the work took about a month. Those details were reported at the time; the outlets did not publish an independent examination of the image’s source files. Artnet News
Was the artwork actually AI-generated?
Moran said he created the image in Photoshop, not with an AI image generator. He offered to provide the original PSD, and PC Gamer reported that he had Photoshop files and sketches documenting his process. That is the artist’s account and the evidence he reportedly offered. The contemporaneous coverage does not describe a forensic review that independently verifies how the image was made, so it cannot conclusively settle the production method.

What did the moderator say?
According to Hyperallergic, an anonymous r/Art moderator told Moran, “I don’t believe you,” then wrote: “Even if you did ‘paint’ it yourself, it’s so obviously an AI-prompted design that it doesn’t matter.” The moderator reportedly argued that people would not believe Moran’s denial and contrasted the time a person might spend making art with AI’s ability to produce an image in seconds. Hyperallergic
PC Gamer and Artnet News also reported the moderator’s core response. Artnet said Moran was muted and could not contact the moderators for 30 days. The moderator’s identity was not disclosed in the reporting.

Why did r/Art restrict AI-generated images?
The subreddit’s stated rule prohibited AI art. In comments reported by Futurism and Artnet News, a moderator explained that the concern was volume: images made quickly with AI could overwhelm the community if they were allowed. Futurism quoted the moderator saying, “We don’t necessarily have anything against AI Art, but when people can churn it out so quickly and easily if it’s allowed the sub becomes nothing but AI art rather quickly.” Futurism

In the reported exchange, the moderator treated the image’s perceived AI-like appearance as decisive even if Moran had painted it himself. The coverage describes the conflict, not a formal or independently assessed solution for handling such appeals.

Moran said the accusation hurt and objected to the moderator’s response. Contemporary coverage described support for the artist, protests, and the moderator’s message becoming a meme. The incident illustrates how a style-based judgment can become consequential when a community bans AI-generated work. It does not show how often human-made art is misidentified: the contemporary reports provide no study or rate of false accusations. They also do not establish whether Moran’s ban was subsequently reversed or verify r/Art’s present-day policy. The reports described the subreddit as having roughly 22 million users at the time; that dated figure is community context, not evidence about AI detection.
