Short answer: Ashampoo SHARPEN #5 was legitimately offered free to BetaNews readers, but that promotion ended on March 31, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, it should be treated as an expired giveaway, not a currently free download.
SHARPEN #5 is a Windows desktop tool that can improve mild camera shake, modest directional blur, haze, and weak edge definition. It cannot reliably recreate detail erased by severe motion blur, missed focus, extreme cropping, or heavy compression.
Was the SHARPEN #5 giveaway real?
Yes. BetaNews reported the promotion on March 4, 2026, describing Ashampoo SHARPEN #5 as normally costing about $50 but available free to BetaNews readers through March 31.

That date has passed. The offer was a time-limited reader promotion, not evidence that Ashampoo created a permanently free edition. An old article, banner, or redemption link should not be assumed to work now, and any page promising a “free full version,” cracked license, or key generator is a security risk. Use Ashampoo’s official download or purchase channels instead.
What SHARPEN #5 actually does
SHARPEN #5 is designed to make existing image information appear clearer. Sharpening increases local contrast around edges; it does not photograph missing detail back into existence.
According to Ashampoo’s product information and its user documentation, the program includes:
- Multidirectional sharpening for blur that has a discernible direction.
- Camera-shake correction intended to counter movement during exposure.
- An AI mode within the multidirectional sharpening system.
- Supersampling to recalculate image information at higher sampling levels and smooth contours.
- Haze and fog correction to improve contrast and color separation.
- Selective processing and area protection to reduce unwanted sharpening in skies, skin, smooth backgrounds, and other low-detail regions.
The AI label should be kept in perspective. Ashampoo says AI can produce a more homogeneous or calmer result in its comparisons, but the available evidence does not establish that it outperforms Photoshop, Topaz Photo AI, or any other competing product. There is no independent benchmark or controlled comparison supporting a percentage improvement claim.

Which blurry photos are realistic candidates?

Forensic or factual details deserve particular caution. A face, license plate, or line of text may look more defined after processing without becoming genuinely readable or accurate. AI enhancement can create plausible textures and edges rather than recover the original scene.
How to use SHARPEN #5
- Import the image. Drag a file into the application or use its file-load command.
- Start with the Original preset. Select a more specific category—such as camera shake or blurring, portrait, landscape, or general image sharpness—when it better describes the photograph.
- Run the automatic correction. Choose Set automatically so the program analyzes the image and applies a suggested correction. Selecting a preset may only prepare the processing options; the visible change may not appear until the automatic or sharpening operation is run.
- Compare before and after. Inspect the result at 100% and at the size you will actually view or print it.
- Back off aggressive settings. Reduce correction strength if edges develop bright or dark outlines, ringing, crunchy textures, or exaggerated noise.
- Save a separate copy. Export under a new filename and keep the untouched original.
What to do when automatic mode looks worse
More sharpening is not necessarily better sharpening. If the result looks artificial:
- Undo or reset the correction.
- Lower the correction strength.
- Apply denoising before sharpening when sensor noise or JPEG artifacts are prominent.
- Try halo reduction around high-contrast borders.
- Protect smooth areas or use selective processing.
- Use a lower quality mode if processing time is excessive, then compare it with a higher-quality result when practical.
- Judge both a close-up and the normal viewing size. A setting that looks impressive at extreme magnification may look harsh in the finished photograph.
- Export in a lossless or high-quality format when appropriate; repeated JPEG saving can add another layer of artifacts.
Ashampoo’s manual describes AI as optional in Professional mode: turning it off returns to conventional processing based on local point-spread-function calculations. That gives experienced users a way to compare AI-assisted and conventional results rather than accepting one mode blindly.

Requirements, pricing, and version confusion
SHARPEN #5 is presented as a Windows desktop application. The current U.S. requirements page lists Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11, at least a 4 GB RAM configuration, an Intel Core i3 or comparable AMD processor, a DirectX-compatible graphics card, and a minimum 1600×900 display. It also says the Ashampoo App is required for installation.
Ashampoo’s requirements information is inconsistent: another version of the same requirements listing shows 8 GB RAM rather than 4 GB. Check the live page before installing, especially on an older computer. The available evidence does not establish versions for macOS, Linux, iPhone, Android, or browser use.
Current pricing also varies by region and page. On August 18, 2026, Ashampoo’s Canada storefront displayed $22.50 against a $75 reference price and described a lifetime license. A U.S. page displayed $55 against $110 and showed a three-day trial signal. These figures may change with location, currency, promotion, and edition, so verify the final price and terms at checkout. Do not assume a SHARPEN #5 purchase includes the newer product.

That newer product matters: Ashampoo has official SHARPEN #6 documentation dated 2025. Search results referring to SHARPEN #6 are not evidence that the expired #5 giveaway remains available, nor that an older license automatically upgrades.

SHARPEN #5 may suit a Windows user who has many mildly soft photographs, prefers a focused sharpening workflow, wants automatic presets, and favors a one-time license over a subscription. It is most defensible as a specialized enhancement tool, not as a universal photo editor.

Alternatives by use case
- Adobe Photoshop: better when sharpening is one part of a broader workflow involving layers, masks, retouching, and compositing. Its subscription model is the main trade-off.
- Topaz Photo AI: a more directly dedicated option for AI sharpening, denoising, and enlargement. Check its current pricing and license terms independently.
- DxO PureRAW: better suited to RAW processing, noise reduction, and lens correction than to being a simple standalone blur-fix utility.
- Affinity Photo: a broader desktop editor for users seeking a non-subscription workflow, but not a direct substitute for specialized AI deblurring.
- GIMP: free and open source, with conventional sharpening and retouching tools. It offers more manual control than one-click restoration but less automation.
- darktable: free and open source, with a RAW workflow and cataloging features. It is not a direct replacement for dedicated AI blur correction.
Verdict
The BetaNews offer was real, but it ended on March 31, 2026. SHARPEN #5 can make some mildly blurry, shaky, hazy, or soft photos look better, particularly when recognizable edges remain in the original. It cannot reliably restore detail that the camera never captured, and its AI mode is not independent proof of superior results.
If you already legitimately obtained the software, it is worth trying on duplicate files with restrained settings. If you are shopping now, compare the regional price and terms for SHARPEN #5 with the newer SHARPEN #6 and with dedicated alternatives. Buy it for controlled sharpening—not for a guaranteed rescue of severely blurred photographs.
