Atmosphere is a custom, externally mounted architectural façade system rather than a standard panel product. Panels are arranged on tensioned stainless-steel cables and engineered for the building, creating a configurable outer layer for solar shading, visual screening and architectural expression while retaining an open-air appearance. A separate Atmosphere FX version uses an extrusion instead of the traditional cables for buildings one to three storeys high.
The system can cover an entire elevation or selected zones. Its performance is determined by orientation, panel geometry, spacing, attachment method and the local building envelope; published percentages describe façade irradiation in one modeled Melbourne office scenario, not guaranteed whole-building energy savings.

What an Atmosphere façade is
Atmosphere is presented by Locker/Webforge Locker as a project-specific external façade assembly. The manufacturer’s engineering team develops the panel layout, cable arrangement and attachment details for each project. That approach allows the outer layer to be used across a complete façade or only where screening and solar control are needed.
System anatomy
- Panels: The visible metal elements form the pattern, density and visual rhythm of the façade. The 2017 product-news article describes perforated metal arranged in multiple layers; current panel ranges and profiles should be confirmed from the latest project documentation rather than assumed from that historical description.
- Tensioned stainless-steel cables: In the standard Atmosphere configuration, panels are mounted on cables kept under tension. The cable grid is part of the structural and visual design, so its supports and connections must be engineered for the host building.
- Custom spacing and orientation: Panel position, angle, overlap and open area determine how much sun is intercepted and how much view and daylight remain.
- Building interface: The façade may be fixed to a new structure or designed as a retrofit. Attachment points, edge conditions, wind actions and access requirements are project matters, not universal product dimensions.
What the system is intended to do
The manufacturer positions Atmosphere for solar shading and visual screening without making the building read as a sealed box. From inside, the open arrangement can preserve outward views and daylight; from outside, the layered panels can soften glare and change the building’s appearance. These are design intentions and manufacturer-described benefits. The result on a particular elevation depends on climate, glass, orientation, panel density and the surrounding site.
How do Atmosphere facades work?
The outer panels intercept part of the sun before it reaches the curtain wall or other glazed enclosure. Because the panels are separated from the primary façade, the design can combine shade with permeability rather than replacing the window wall with a solid screen. A typical project follows this sequence:

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Define the façade problem. The design team identifies overheated or glare-prone elevations, privacy requirements, desired views, daylight targets and the architectural areas to be screened.
- Analyze each orientation. North, south, east and west façades receive different sun paths. The team evaluates the local climate, glazing, surrounding obstructions and seasonal exposure instead of applying one density to every side.
- Select the panel arrangement. Pattern, perforation, spacing, layer depth and orientation are adjusted to balance irradiation reduction with visibility and daylight. A denser pattern may screen more but can also alter views and the façade’s visual weight.
- Choose the attachment approach. Standard Atmosphere uses tensioned stainless-steel cables. For eligible low-rise projects, Atmosphere FX uses an extrusion and different mounting options.
- Engineer the supports and interfaces. Structural checks, mullion or edge connections, tolerances, drainage, movement and installation access must be resolved for the actual building. The manufacturer’s project engineering is essential because this is not a universal, self-installed kit.
- Install and tune the layout. Panels and supports are positioned to the approved geometry. Any change in spacing, angle or attachment after approval can change both appearance and solar performance, so field substitutions require design review.
Atmosphere and Atmosphere FX: which attachment system fits?
Atmosphere FX is described by the manufacturer as an extension for buildings one to three stories high. It replaces the traditional cable arrangement with an FX extrusion, allows panels to be positioned vertically and is offered with modular kits and integration options. The cited options include direct-to-mullion and Aurora rail solutions. Compatibility, load requirements and the available kit for a specific façade must be confirmed with the manufacturer and project engineer.

| Characteristic | Atmosphere | Atmosphere FX |
|---|---|---|
| Primary support approach | Panels on tensioned stainless-steel cables | FX extrusion in place of the traditional cables |
| Stated building range | Project-specific; no universal height limit is stated on the cited page | Buildings one to three stories high |
| Panel positioning | Set out through the engineered cable layout | Vertical positioning is specifically described |
| Integration options | Determined by project engineering | Modular kits, direct-to-mullion and Aurora rail options are described |
| Best decision question | Can the building support and accommodate a tensioned-cable outer layer? | Is the low-rise project compatible with the FX extrusion and selected integration option? |
The two approaches should not be treated as interchangeable appearance packages. The attachment system affects structural design, interfaces, installation sequence and cost, so selection belongs in the early façade-engineering stage.
Where the system is used
The current manufacturer material identifies car parks and commercial buildings as applications for shading and visual screening. Its project gallery shows Royal North Shore Hospital, Tank Street Carpark, Bowden Street in Alexandria and MLC School. Those names demonstrate the range of contexts displayed by the manufacturer; they are not independent performance studies or a guarantee that every project uses the same panel, cable or spacing configuration.
New construction
On a new building, the outer screen can be coordinated with the curtain-wall grid, structure, access strategy and lighting concept before fabrication. Early coordination makes it easier to place supports where they do not conflict with mullions, slabs, fire strategy or maintenance routes.
Retrofit work
The 2017 Architecture & Design article also describes retrofit use to change the appearance of an existing building. A retrofit survey should verify the available structure, fixing zones, façade movement, access for installation and the consequences of adding an external layer. Historical references to particular colours and profiles should be checked against current product literature before they are written into a specification.

What the published irradiation figures actually show
The current Atmosphere Systems page attributes its figures to GHD analysis of an E1 panel in a typical curtain-wall application for a typical office in Melbourne, Australia. Valmont Structures publishes the percentages, but the page does not state the analysis publication year. The metric is average annual façade insolation: energy reaching the façade. It is not whole-building energy consumption, cooling-load reduction, electricity-bill savings, carbon reduction or a payback calculation.
| Façade orientation | Reported irradiation reduction | How to read the number |
|---|---|---|
| North | 77.9% | Average annual façade irradiation reduction in the stated E1/Melbourne office model |
| South | 65.6% | Average annual façade irradiation reduction in the stated E1/Melbourne office model |
| East | 74.4% | Average annual façade irradiation reduction in the stated E1/Melbourne office model |
| West | 73.0% | Average annual façade irradiation reduction in the stated E1/Melbourne office model |
The live page displays an east-facing unshaded baseline as “2951,412 Wh/m2,” an anomalous number format. It is safer not to quote or silently correct that baseline; a project team needing the underlying value should consult the technical literature or ask the manufacturer. The percentages themselves should remain tied to the E1 panel, typical curtain wall and Melbourne assumptions.
How to specify the panels for a real building
Start with orientation and solar exposure
Map the sun exposure of every elevation rather than choosing a single building-wide pattern. East and west façades can experience low-angle morning and afternoon sun, while north and south behavior varies with latitude and season. Nearby towers, trees and site setbacks can materially change exposure, so a modeled orientation study is more useful than a generic density rule.

Set the shading objective
Decide whether the priority is reducing direct sun, moderating glare, protecting a particular zone or creating a consistent architectural screen. “More shade” is not automatically better: a very dense layer can reduce outward visibility or daylight and may conflict with the intended open appearance.

Balance pattern, spacing and visibility
Panel perforation, open area, overlap, depth and orientation should be reviewed from both outside and inside. Request daylight, glare and view checks for representative rooms, especially where occupants work close to glazing. A pattern that looks light at street level can read as substantially denser from an upper floor or at a different viewing angle.
Check height and attachment constraints
Confirm whether the building and façade zone suit a cable-mounted Atmosphere system or the one-to-three-storey FX approach. The attachment decision affects mullions, edge beams, rails, tolerances and installation access. Do not assume an FX modular kit is suitable simply because a project is low-rise; the manufacturer still needs to verify the interface and engineering.
Coordinate engineering and budget
Atmosphere is a custom B2B façade package, not a standardized retail panel with a universal price. Budgeting must account for panel quantity and finish, cable or extrusion supports, structural modifications, access equipment, engineering, fabrication, transport and installation. Obtain a project quotation and drawings before comparing alternatives. The cited product pages do not publish a standard price, a maintenance allowance or a universal installation duration.
What the older product-news claims mean today
The 2017 article describes a layered perforated-metal “floating effect,” views through the façade, moderated glare and admitted daylight. It also presents a cooling effect that could reduce fan and air-conditioning use and mentions potential for the panels to serve as a solar-power resource. Those statements are historical product-news claims, not independent measurements of occupant comfort, guaranteed HVAC savings or a quantified energy-return case.

For a current project, treat them as design hypotheses to test. A building-performance consultant can model solar gains, glare, daylight, thermal comfort and HVAC operation using the selected panel geometry and local weather file. Do not convert the published irradiation percentages into an electricity saving, carbon figure or payback period without that additional analysis.
Questions to resolve before ordering
- Which elevations and floor areas need shading or screening, and what are their actual solar exposures?
- What view, daylight and glare limits apply to occupied rooms?
- Is the project a new build or retrofit, and where can the support loads be transferred?
- Does the building height and interface suit cable Atmosphere or Atmosphere FX?
- Which panel pattern, perforation, finish and spacing are current and available?
- What structural, façade, fire, access and movement checks are required?
- Which performance outputs will be accepted: façade irradiation, internal glare, daylight, cooling load or another metric?
- Who will provide shop drawings, installation tolerances, inspection and future access information?
Is Atmosphere a consumer product?
No. The system is specified and engineered for building projects. There is no honest direct-fit accessory, replacement part or retail kit that can reproduce an Atmosphere façade, and generic metal panels or tools do not substitute for its engineered supports and interfaces. The practical next step is a manufacturer consultation using project drawings, elevations, building height, orientation and the desired shading outcome.
Bottom line for architects and owners
Atmosphere is best understood as a configurable second skin: panels on a tensioned cable network, engineered to shape sunlight, views and the building’s exterior identity. Atmosphere FX offers a different extrusion-based route for one- to three-storey buildings. The published 65.6% to 77.9% orientation figures are useful evidence that the concept can materially reduce modeled façade irradiation, but they apply only to the stated E1/Melbourne office scenario. A defensible specification therefore starts with project-specific solar and structural analysis, not with a promise of universal energy savings.
