A sewer jetter stores high-pressure hose on a powered machine or reel and uses a nozzle to propel water through a blocked or dirty drain. The reel should not be confused with a self-contained jetter. It has no pump, engine or water supply of its own. Its job is hose storage, controlled deployment and operator access. The September 2024 accessories catalogue lists an integrated on/off valve, pressure gauge, stand/handle and three nozzle holders. Aussie Pumps describes the valve as allowing remote control of the jetter; the pump and pressure source still come from the paired machine.
A separate manufacturer page describes matching a 60 m Viper Mini Reel with the Mini Cobra for hard-to-access work. That is an example of a supported pairing, not proof that every compact jetter can drive every reel. Confirm the exact machine model, hose bore, pressure rating and couplings before purchase.
Current hose and jetter combinations
The newest dated product specification in the supplied material is Aussie Pumps’ September 2024 drain-cleaning accessories catalogue. It distinguishes the reel by hose size and jetter family rather than presenting one universal model.

Hose diameter affects flow, pressure loss, flexibility and the type of nozzle and coupling that can be used. A 3/16-inch reel should not be substituted for a 1/4-inch setup simply because both are 60 m long. The catalogue’s family assignments are the manufacturer’s compatibility listing; a supplier should confirm fit if your machine has been modified or uses non-standard connections.
Frame choices
The September 2024 sheet lists a black-steel version and a deluxe stainless-steel version. The catalogue does not establish that one frame is universally stronger, lighter or more corrosion-proof in every working environment, so select on the basis of exposure, handling and the exact quoted specification rather than assuming a performance difference that is not stated.

- Pressure gauge: gives the operator a pressure indication at the reel assembly; it does not replace checking the jetter’s own specifications.
- Three nozzle holders: keep commonly used nozzles with the reel rather than loose on the ground.
How the advertised 120 m reach is calculated
Aussie Pumps describes a configuration with 60 m of hose on the jetter and another 60 m on the Viper Mini Reel. Adding those nominal lengths gives 120 m of hose from the machine location to the working end. This is a manufacturer-stated configuration, not a guaranteed distance into every drain.
Actual usable reach is reduced by the route from the jetter to the reel, bends, vertical sections, access geometry, hose that must remain outside the drain and the point at which pressure or flow becomes unsuitable for the nozzle. Friction loss also varies with hose bore, water flow, pressure, nozzle design and debris. Treat 120 m as a planning figure for the specified setup, not as a promise that a nozzle will clean effectively at 120 m in every pipe.

Can you leave the jetter in the ute?
For the described arrangement, yes: the manufacturer says the jetter can remain in the ute while the mini reel is carried to the work area, extending the combined hose length to 120 m. This is useful when the vehicle cannot approach a pit, lane, backyard or other access point.
Leaving the machine in the vehicle does not remove the need for safe positioning. Keep the jetter stable, protect hoses from traffic and sharp edges, manage exhaust and ventilation according to the engine instructions, and ensure the operator can shut down water and the engine quickly. The reel’s valve is described as remote jetter control, but it is not a substitute for understanding the machine’s emergency stop, fuel, exhaust and high-pressure procedures.
Reel alone or a complete drain-clearing kit?
The catalogue distinguishes the reel assembly from kits that bundle the items needed for a more complete drain-cleaning setup. Aussie Pumps’ drain-clearing kits include the reel and hose, a jetter tool box, a quick coupler and a safety plate.

Do not assume that a reel-only price includes the toolbox, safety plate or every nozzle. Ask for an itemised list and the current model code.
How to connect and use the reel
The precise coupler sequence depends on the jetter and hose supplied. Use the machine and reel manuals as the controlling instructions. A safe planning sequence is:
- Identify the machine and reel variant. Confirm whether the setup is a 3/16-inch Cobra/King Cobra configuration or a 1/4-inch Python configuration. Check pressure, flow and connection specifications on both products.
- Inspect before pressurising. Look for cuts, flattened sections, damaged threads, worn seals, loose guards and a gauge face that is unreadable. Replace defective parts rather than testing a suspect hose under pressure.
- Position the reel. Set the stand on stable ground close to the drain access. Route the hose so vehicles, doors and sharp edges cannot crush or cut it, and leave enough slack for controlled movement.
- Connect with the system depressurised. Fit the specified quick coupler and verify that its locking mechanism is fully engaged. Never force a mismatched fitting.
- Fit the correct nozzle. Use a nozzle and jetter setting approved for the hose, machine and drain. Store spare nozzles in the reel’s holders rather than placing them where grit can enter the connection.
- Flush and test at low risk. Start water flow according to the jetter instructions, check for leaks and watch the reel gauge. Stop immediately if a coupling moves, a hose bulges or pressure behaves abnormally.
- Advance and retrieve deliberately. Feed hose while maintaining control at the access point. Do not rely on the nozzle to pull an uncontrolled loop into the drain, and do not exceed the hose length or bend limits specified for the equipment.
- Shut down and depressurise. Close the valve and follow the jetter’s shutdown procedure before disconnecting. Drain or rinse the hose as instructed, rewind it without kinks and secure the reel for transport.
Pressure ratings and safety boundaries
The Architecture & Design article dated 13 March 2008 described the then-new reel as suitable for high-pressure water blasters or sewer-cleaning jetters up to 5,000 psi and called it a 5,000 psi-rated reel. That is historical product context. It must not be carried forward as the rating of every reel, hose, coupling, nozzle or currently sold jetter.
The 2024 catalogue distinguishes hose sizes and machine families but does not make one universal pressure claim for all combinations. Confirm the working and maximum pressure for the exact reel variant, hose and fittings with Aussie Pumps or an authorised supplier. The lowest-rated component governs the safe setup.
The same catalogue separately lists safety accessories, including a hose restraint described as required with Class B machines under AS/NZS 4233.1. That requirement is specifically scoped to the stated Class B equipment; it is not a blanket claim that every operator or drain needs the same accessory. Check the standard, the machine’s instructions and the job’s local requirements before operating.

- Never search for a leak with your hand. Shut down, isolate and depressurise first.
- Use eye, foot, hand and hearing protection appropriate to the jetter and worksite.
- Control the hose at the access point and prevent kinks, loops and trip hazards.
- Do not infer that a nozzle is suitable for a particular pipe, lining or blockage without checking its instructions.
Replacement parts and securing options
The September 2024 sheet lists service and security components separately, including a swivel, repair kit, ball valve, locking pin, handle and Reel Lock. These parts may vary by reel version. Match the part to the exact model code rather than ordering by appearance alone.
A Reel Lock or locking pin can help secure equipment during storage or transport, while a replacement swivel or repair kit addresses wear in service. Neither changes the reel’s pressure rating or makes an incompatible hose safe. Keep records of hose replacement, seal changes and inspection dates so a damaged component is not returned to service unnoticed.
How to evaluate a quote in 2024 and later
The September 2024 catalogue prices are in Australian dollars, exclude GST and are stated ex Sydney warehouse. They are dated catalogue values, not a verified current quote. Freight, stock status, updated model numbers and supplier pricing can change. Ask for a current written quotation that identifies:
- black-steel or deluxe stainless-steel frame;
- 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch Redflex hose and its 60 m length;
- the compatible Cobra, King Cobra or Python machine family;
- included couplers, nozzle, toolbox, safety plate and restraints;
- pressure and flow limits for the complete assembly;
- replacement-part numbers and current availability.
If your priority is access rather than storage, compare the total cost and transport effort of a reel kit with buying a longer single hose for the jetter. A longer hose may alter pressure loss and handling; the reel adds portability and organised deployment. The right choice depends on the machine’s approved hose options and the site layout.

What the 2008 article got right—and what is now historical
The title comes from an Architecture & Design article published on 13 March 2008. That article presented the Viper Mini Reel as a portable accessory for high-pressure water blasters and sewer-cleaning jetters, described a stainless-steel swivel and carry frame, and reported 60 m of 1/4-inch R8 hose. It also repeated Aussie Pumps representative Matt Dale’s promotional statement that the reel made drain cleaning “a one man job instead of the two man chore.” That is a company claim, not an independently measured productivity result.

The later September 2024 catalogue adds an important qualification: the current listing separates 3/16-inch and 1/4-inch hose versions and assigns them to different jetter families. Therefore, the 2008 1/4-inch description should not be treated as the only current configuration. Use the newer model-and-hose listing when checking compatibility, while treating the older article as historical context for the product’s original presentation.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The coupler will not lock
Stop and depressurise the system. Check that the reel and jetter use the same coupling standard, that the seal is present and clean, and that the locking sleeve is not damaged. A coupler that needs force or sits partly engaged should not be pressurised.
Pressure drops when the reel is used
Check for a kink, crushed section, leaking swivel, blocked nozzle or hose size that is not approved for the machine. Additional length and smaller bore can increase friction loss. Compare the observed setup with the jetter’s specified flow and pressure rather than increasing pressure beyond the lowest-rated component.
The reel is difficult to move or unwind
Place the stand on a level surface, release any transport lock, and inspect for crossed layers or a damaged flange. Rewind under controlled tension after use; pulling sideways against the frame can load the swivel and make the hose bind.
The gauge reading is abnormal
Stop flow and isolate the machine before investigating. A gauge can be damaged, blocked or inaccurate, and a normal reading does not prove that a hose or coupling is safe. Compare the gauge and the jetter’s own indications only after inspection and according to the manufacturer’s service instructions.
Who should choose the Viper Mini Reel?
It suits an operator who already uses a compatible sewer jetter and needs a portable 60 m hose at a remote drain access. The strongest case is a Cobra, King Cobra or Python setup that matches the catalogue’s hose-size assignment, with enough room to position the jetter away from the work area. It is less suitable as a first purchase for someone who needs a complete machine, pump and water system; the reel cannot perform that role alone.
Before committing, have the supplier confirm the exact reel model, hose bore, coupling, pressure rating, frame material, kit contents and safety accessories in writing. That check prevents the most expensive mistake: receiving a 60 m reel that physically connects but is not an approved match for the jetter or nozzle you intend to use.
