The Austral Lock Yarra Series was a range of locks for sliding glass doors in timber, aluminium or uPVC frames. In a 17 November 2010 Architecture & Design report, the range combined an all-metal lock body, a self-adjusting catch plate, twin counter-acting beaks and an anti-slam plunger with several appearance options. The same report identified two formats: Yarra Ridge Classic, with an offset cylinder, and Yarra View, a narrow-format lock described for sliding doors that close from either the left or the right.
That description is historical, not a current specification sheet. Austral Lock’s present company information confirms that it still supplies hardware for windows, security-screen doors and sliding patio doors, but it does not confirm that Yarra locks remain in production, list present dimensions or state that its published guarantees apply to Yarra. Anyone replacing a lock should therefore treat the old article as a guide to the design and features, then verify current availability and exact fit with Austral Lock, a locksmith or a specialist supplier.

What the Yarra Series was designed to do
The Yarra Series addressed a specific hardware problem: securing a large sliding glass door without making the fitting look out of place in a home. The historical product report presents the lock as a design-and-security product for three common frame materials—timber, aluminium and uPVC. That broad material description does not mean one lock body fits every frame. Sliding-door sections, mounting holes, glass clearances and the direction in which the panel closes still have to match the selected lock.
Austral Lock’s 2010 announcement described the construction as all metal. Its locking action used two counter-acting beaks that engage an all-metal catch plate. Because the beaks act against the catch rather than relying on a single hook, the article said the arrangement was intended to resist jemmying and lifting. Those are design intentions reported at launch, not a measured security rating. No independent test result, force figure or certification level was supplied with the description.

A self-adjusting catch plate was another central feature. The article said it could respond to movement in the building and door over time. Sliding doors can shift as frames settle, rollers wear or seasonal conditions change; a catch that can accommodate some movement may help preserve engagement. The report did not state the adjustment range, the adjustment method or the maintenance interval, so an installer should not assume that the plate can compensate for a badly aligned or damaged door.
How the locking mechanism was described
Twin counter-acting beaks
When the door is closed, the two beaks extend into the all-metal catch plate. Their opposing action is intended to make both jemmying and lifting more difficult than with a simple latch. The article does not identify the steel grade, the depth of engagement, the fasteners or the frame reinforcement needed to achieve that result. Those details matter in a real installation because the lock can only be as strong as the door section, screws and strike area supporting it.
Anti-slam plunger
The Yarra design also included an anti-slam plunger. According to the 2010 report, the plunger prevents the beaks from extending until the sliding panel is fully closed. That sequence is intended to stop the beaks striking the frame or catch while the door is still moving, reducing the chance of damage to the door and lock. It should not be interpreted as permission to force a misaligned panel; if the plunger does not release when the panel reaches the closed position, the alignment needs to be checked.

Self-adjusting catch plate
The catch plate was described as self-adjusting for building and door movement. This is useful in principle, but it is not a substitute for a square frame, sound rollers and a properly positioned lock. A door that drags, bounces out of the frame or leaves a visible gap at the meeting stile may need repair before a replacement lock is fitted.
Yarra Ridge Classic and Yarra View: the stated difference
The launch article distinguishes the two named lock types by format and operation, not by a security grade. It associates Ridge Classic with an offset cylinder intended to make operation easier. Yarra View is described as a narrow-format lock suitable for a wide range of left- or right-closing sliding doors. The source does not say that either model is stronger, more weather-resistant or more suitable for a particular frame material.

Use the distinction as a starting point when identifying an old lock, not as a reason to substitute one model for the other. A narrow body may be necessary where a stile has little mounting space, while an offset cylinder may be preferable where the handle or keyway would otherwise be difficult to reach. Only a current drawing or a physical measurement can confirm that assumption.

Styles and finishes listed for the original range
The 2010 article listed three styling treatments—Slim, Edge and Curve—and seven finishes. These names describe the appearance of the furniture; they do not identify different locking mechanisms.

Because the list comes from a 2010 product announcement, it should not be treated as a current colour chart. Finishes can be discontinued, renamed or replaced, and an old colour sample may look different from a present coating. Ask for a current finish code or a physical sample if matching other door hardware is important.
Will a Yarra lock fit a sliding glass door?
It may, if the door and frame match the lock’s physical requirements, but the historical article does not provide enough information to confirm a fit remotely. The stated frame materials—timber, aluminium and uPVC—are only the first filter. Before ordering, record the following details.

- Which panel moves and whether it closes from the left or the right when viewed from inside.
- Lock-body height, width and depth, measured after removing or exposing the existing fitting where safe.
- Distance from the door edge to the cylinder and from the lock face to the glass.
- Catch-plate position, available fixing surface and the direction in which the beaks must engage.
- Glass thickness, stile width and any internal reinforcement that could obstruct screws or the lock body.
- Whether the panel currently closes squarely, rolls smoothly and meets the frame without excessive play.
Do not enlarge holes or cut a stile simply because the old lock appears similar. A locksmith can check the profile, establish the handing and confirm whether a replacement catch or packer is required. If the original lock is still installed, photographs of the interior, exterior and catch area, together with a ruler in the image, can help a supplier identify the format, but they are not a substitute for measurements.
A practical replacement and installation process
- Identify the existing hardware. Photograph the lock, cylinder, faceplate and catch. Note any model marking and whether the door closes left or right.
- Check the door before removing the lock. Clean the track, test the rollers and close the panel slowly. A binding or sagging door can mimic a lock fault and can prevent the anti-slam plunger from operating correctly.
- Measure the installation space. Record lock-body dimensions, screw centres, cylinder position, stile width and the catch location. Keep the old hardware until the new fit has been proven.
- Confirm a current part number. Ask Austral Lock or a qualified supplier whether the requested Ridge Classic or View variant is still supplied, and request a current drawing or installation sheet. The 2010 article does not provide those dimensions.
- Test the catch engagement before final tightening. With the door closed but not forced, the beaks should enter the catch cleanly. If they hit the frame, stop and correct alignment rather than relying on the self-adjusting feature to absorb the error.
- Operate the cylinder and plunger repeatedly. Test from the normal indoor and outdoor positions, if applicable. The plunger should keep the beaks retracted while the panel is open and release only when the panel is fully closed.
- Secure and document the installation. Use the fasteners and any frame reinforcement specified by the current instructions. Keep the receipt, model number, finish information and warranty terms for future servicing.
These steps describe a verification sequence, not a universal fitting method. Door-security work can involve glass, concealed screws and structural frame sections; a qualified installer should perform drilling, cutting or reinforcement where the manufacturer’s instructions do not cover the existing profile.

The Yarra report gives a credible description of physical features: twin beaks, an all-metal catch, an anti-slam plunger and an adjustment concept for movement. It does not supply a quantified attack test, a forced-entry classification, a corrosion test, a fire rating or a statement that the lock meets a particular Australian or international standard. Consequently, it is accurate to say that the design was intended to resist lifting and jemmying, but not to assign it a security level or compare it with another lock as “more secure.”

Security also depends on the complete door assembly. Thin or damaged stiles, loose rollers, weak screws, a misaligned catch and accessible glass can undermine a robust lock body. If the door is used as part of a security or insurance requirement, obtain the required standard or certification in writing and verify that the entire assembly—not just the replacement lock—qualifies.

Is the Yarra Series still available?
The detailed Yarra description is dated 17 November 2010. Austral Lock’s current homepage says the company is based in Brooklyn, Victoria, is part of Gainsborough and Allegion, and has 40 years of local manufacturing experience. It currently describes products for windows, security-screen doors and sliding patio doors. That company-level information shows an ongoing focus on relevant hardware, but it does not confirm that a Yarra-branded lock remains in the catalogue.
The homepage also mentions a seven-year tarnish-resistant guarantee and a ten-year mechanical guarantee for “leading products.” It does not say those guarantees cover Yarra, and no Yarra-specific warranty terms, current finish list or technical drawing are established here. Treat any marketplace listing or old stock notice as unverified until the seller confirms the model, dimensions, condition, return policy and applicable warranty.
Questions to ask a supplier or locksmith
- Is the part a genuine Yarra Ridge Classic or Yarra View, and is it new, old stock or refurbished?
- What are the current lock-body and catch-plate dimensions, screw centres and cylinder position?
- Does the supplied version suit my frame material, stile width and left- or right-closing arrangement?
- Are replacement catches, cylinders, keys and trim pieces still available?
- What installation instructions, fasteners and reinforcement requirements apply to my door profile?
- Which warranty covers the lock, finish and mechanical components, and who provides that warranty?
- Is there an independently documented security rating or test report for this exact model and configuration?
Written answers to these questions are more useful than relying on a product name alone, particularly when a listing reproduces the 2010 description without confirming present manufacture.
When another solution may be more practical
A replacement Yarra lock makes the most sense when the existing cut-out, handing and catch position can be matched and the owner values preserving the door’s appearance. If the frame is distorted, the rollers are worn or the lock cavity is damaged, repairing the door or replacing the complete hardware set may provide a better result. Where current certification, keyed-alike control, restricted keys or documented attack resistance is mandatory, choose a currently supported product with published test evidence rather than assuming an older design has equivalent documentation.

The Yarra Series remains identifiable as a historically documented approach to sliding-door hardware: metal construction and a coordinated set of security and design features, with Ridge Classic and View addressing different form-factor and operating needs. Whether it is the right replacement today depends on facts the 2010 article did not record—exact measurements, current stock, compatible profiles, present finishes and warranty coverage.
