If you are comparing steel framed doors in Australia, start by separating two very different purchases: made-to-order architectural systems for homes and commercial interiors, and pressed-metal or fire-rated doorsets for trade and code-controlled work. The ten options below are a practical shortlist of supplier ranges and configurations, not an independently tested ranking. Most architectural doors are quoted to project dimensions, while fire doors must be selected as a complete, tested assembly.

Use the list to identify suitable door types, then request current drawings, certificates, glazing details, hardware preparation, installation requirements and a project-specific quote. Supplier descriptions are claims about their products; they are not a substitute for certificates or test reports covering the exact configuration you intend to install.
What “best” means for a steel-framed door in Australia
There is no single best steel-framed door for every opening. A slim glazed door for a living room has different requirements from a fire door in a corridor, and neither should be compared solely on appearance. The useful questions are:
#1 Best Overall

- Does the opening need hinged, French, sliding, bi-fold, pivot or another operation?
- Is the door an architectural steel system, a pressed-metal frame, or a fire-rated doorset?
- What are the opening dimensions, wall construction, threshold and drainage conditions?
- What glazing, safety glass, acoustic or thermal specification is required?
- Is there a current certificate or test report for the complete frame, leaf, glass, hardware and installation method?
- Will the supplier provide installation, or only manufacture and deliver the components?
The shortlist is ordered by product category and practical use, not by an independent score. Current pricing, lead times and performance rankings were not established on a common basis, so obtain comparable quotations before making a final choice.

Architectural steel-framed door options
1. APLO single hinged doors
APLO describes designing and manufacturing steel windows and doors for domestic and commercial projects. Its single-door configuration is the conventional choice when a clear opening, straightforward hardware and a familiar swing are more important than maximum width. It can be specified as a feature entrance or as a glazed internal or external door, subject to the selected system and glass.
The company says its products use DuraGal or electroplated low-carbon structural steel and that its frames are certified to AS 2047, including compliance with AS 1288. Treat those as manufacturer statements. Ask for the current certificate and confirm that it covers the proposed size, opening direction, glazing, hardware and exposure rather than assuming a range-level statement applies to every door.

2. APLO bi-fold doors
Bi-fold leaves divide a wide opening into connected panels that fold to one or both sides. They can provide a larger usable opening than a single hinged leaf, but the hardware, panel weight, stacking space and threshold become central design constraints. Confirm the maximum panel dimensions, number of leaves, hinge and carrier arrangement, floor guidance, weather seals and the fixing substrate.
For a renovation, measure the structural opening and finished floor levels before requesting a quote. A bi-fold system may need a level, reinforced head and a defined pocket or stacking zone; those conditions should be shown on the supplier’s shop drawings.
3. APLO sliding, French and one-off custom designs
APLO lists sliding and French doors as well as one-off custom designs. Sliding doors avoid a swing arc and are useful where furniture or a narrow terrace limits circulation. French doors provide a pair of hinged leaves and a traditional, wide-opening appearance, but require accurate meeting-stile alignment and adequate clearance on both sides.

“Custom” does not remove technical limits. Request a drawing showing frame sightlines, sill, interlocks, panel weights, drainage, locking points and the proposed glass. If a design departs from a documented configuration, ask which certificate or test evidence applies to that variation.

4. Metro Steel Windows custom sliding doors
Metro Steel Windows describes custom steel-framed doors for residential and commercial projects and says its doors are made to exact dimensions and a design brief. Its sliding option is therefore a project-specific system rather than a standard retail size. Supply the structural opening, finished floor level, desired clear opening, number of panels and pocket or stacking arrangement when seeking a quote.
Sliding performance depends on more than the steel profile. Confirm wheel or carrier specification, track access for cleaning, drainage, weather seals, locking hardware and how the frame is supported. Ask for tolerances so the builder can set the opening accurately.
5. Metro glazed, black-steel and arched-entry styles
Metro also presents glazed, black-steel and arched-entry styles. These descriptions identify a visual and configuration family, not a universal performance level. The company says single or double glazing and optional low-E coatings can be supplied. Select glass by the project’s safety, thermal, acoustic and energy requirements, then have the supplier document the exact make-up.
An arched entry needs a surveyed opening and a shop drawing that defines the curve, spring points, frame joints and glass shape. For a black finish, obtain the specified coating or paint system, preparation and maintenance instructions; colour alone does not establish corrosion resistance or durability.
Pressed-metal and fire-door options
6. Pro Industries pressed-metal frames
Pro Industries describes pressed-metal frames for standard, architectural, fire and performance-specific applications. This is a frame-focused offering, so it should not be treated as interchangeable with a glazed architectural steel door. Confirm which door leaf, hinges, locks, seals and wall details are compatible with the selected frame.

The supplier says frames are available through trade centres in Sydney, the Australian Capital Territory, Melbourne and Brisbane. Availability through those locations does not by itself confirm stock, delivery timing or technical suitability. Check the current profile, gauge, finish, anchor pattern, hardware preparation and installation instructions for your wall construction.
7. Taylors Doors and Frames
Taylors describes pressed-metal frames, solid-core doors and fire-resistant doors, with several frame materials and steel-thickness options. Its search-result information also refers to a range of fire-door ratings that depend on wall type, configuration and size. Because that information is from an older crawl, treat every rating and dimension as provisional until Taylors supplies current documentation.
For a fire opening, request the complete doorset schedule: frame material and thickness, leaf construction, seals, hinges, closer, lockset, glazing (if any), wall condition, maximum size and installation method. A rating attached to one configuration cannot automatically be transferred to another.

Australian Architectural Fire Doors (AAFD) describes metal frames, fire doors and specialty doors in both rated and non-rated versions, with tailored hardware preparations. It is based in Brisbane and says it services South East Queensland with an installation team. Confirm the current service boundary, installer licensing and whether the quoted installation includes the frame, leaf, hardware, seals and required certification.
Use AAFD’s non-rated products where the design brief calls for a robust metal frame without a fire requirement, and its rated products only when the required test evidence matches the building’s code obligation. Have the hardware schedule approved before fabrication; changing a closer, lock or hinge after manufacture can invalidate the tested arrangement.
9. Spence Doors fire-rated metal frames
Spence Doors describes fire-rated metal frames tested and certified with set configurations of its fire-rated doorsets and provides frame-installation information. That combination can simplify specification when the project follows the documented leaf, frame, wall and hardware arrangement exactly.

Before ordering, obtain the current technical documents and check permitted dimensions, wall type, leaf construction, glazing, hardware, clearances, anchors, packers and installation sequence. If the opening differs from the tested configuration, ask the supplier or certifier for a written determination rather than assuming the rating remains valid.
10. Formera architectural steel doors and windows
Formera presents an Australian architectural steel door and window offering, but the available public information does not expose enough technical detail for a specification-level comparison. It is therefore best treated as a supplier to investigate, not as evidence of a particular rating, thermal value, glass build-up or lead time.
Ask Formera for profile sections, finish system, glazing options, maximum tested dimensions, current standards certificates, warranty terms, installation coverage and examples of the proposed configuration. Do not approve a schedule until those documents identify the exact product.
How to compare quotes without mixing unlike products
| Comparison axis | Questions for every supplier | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Is it hinged, French, sliding, bi-fold or another documented type? What clear opening and panel limits apply? | Movement, circulation, hardware and structural loads differ by configuration. |
| Dimensions | What are the structural and finished opening sizes, tolerances, sill height and fixing zones? | Custom fabrication cannot correct an inaccurately formed opening. |
| Glazing | Single or double glazing? What glass type, safety treatment, thickness, spacer and low-E option are specified? | Glass affects safety, weight, thermal behaviour, acoustics and compliance. |
| Evidence | Which current certificate or test report covers this exact frame, leaf, glass and hardware? | Range-level marketing statements may not cover a modified assembly. |
| Fire performance | What FRL or fire-door rating is required, and what wall, size and installation conditions apply? | Fire performance belongs to a tested doorset, not an attractive frame alone. |
| Materials and finish | What steel type, protective treatment, coating and maintenance schedule are specified? | Material and finish determine fabrication, appearance and upkeep requirements. |
| Hardware and service | Which locks, closers, hinges, tracks and seals are included? Is supply-only or installation offered? | Hardware changes clearances, operation and (for fire doors) the tested configuration. |
| Commercial terms | What is the current project price, validity period, deposit, lead time and delivery responsibility? | Custom and trade products are quoted individually; no common price or lead-time benchmark is established. |
Glazing, steel and finish: what to put in the specification
Ask for a written glass schedule rather than accepting “glass door” as a complete description. It should identify whether the unit is single or double glazed, the glass type and safety treatment, thicknesses, spacer or cavity, low-E coating if selected, and any acoustic or solar-control requirement. The supplier should confirm that the glass is compatible with the frame and complies with the applicable safety-glazing provisions.
APLO identifies DuraGal or electroplated low-carbon structural steel. Metro identifies single and double glazing with an optional low-E coating. These statements describe available materials or options; they do not establish a comparative durability, energy or lifespan result. Request coating specifications, edge protection, drainage and maintenance instructions for the site’s coastal, wet or high-exposure conditions.
Fire-rated doors: the compliance path
The National Construction Code is the starting point whenever an opening is required to resist fire. NCC 2022 Volume One Specification 12 states: “Required fire doors must comply with AS 1905.1, which is the construction Standard for fire doors.” AS 1905.1 requires testing in accordance with AS 1530.4. The NCC provision also addresses glazing in fire doors and the applicable radiation criterion.

- Match the tested wall type, opening size, clearances, anchors and hardware exactly, or obtain written approval for a permitted variation.
- Install according to the supplier’s documented sequence and retain certificates, tags, inspection records and maintenance information.
A steel-framed glazed door is not automatically fire-rated. Architectural appearance, steel thickness or a supplier’s general “fire” wording cannot replace the complete tested assembly.
From opening measure to installed door
- Define the use. Record whether the opening is internal or external, residential or commercial, and whether it is on a fire-compartment boundary.
- Survey the opening. Measure width, height, diagonals, wall thickness, sill and head levels, reveal depth, drainage path and available fixing zones. Photograph concealed services and the surrounding structure.
- Select the operation. Decide between hinged, French, sliding, bi-fold or an arched arrangement based on circulation, stacking space and weather exposure.
- Set the performance brief. Specify safety glazing, thermal or acoustic goals, finish, locks, closers, seals, screens and accessibility requirements.
- Request comparable documents. Ask each supplier for a plan, elevation, section, glass schedule, hardware schedule, finish specification, certificates and installation scope.
- Check the quote. Separate manufacture, glazing, powder coating or paint, delivery, cranage, site protection, installation, flashing, trim and builder’s work so allowances are visible.
- Approve shop drawings. Verify handing, sightlines, clear opening, thresholds, panel weights, drainage, meeting stiles and fixing details before fabrication.
- Inspect on delivery. Check dimensions, finish, glass markings, labels, seals, hardware and damage before the frame is concealed.
- Commission and document. Test operation, locks, closers, seals and drainage; retain certificates, as-installed drawings and maintenance instructions.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Ranking unlike products: Do not compare a decorative glazed system with a fire-rated pressed-metal doorset as though they serve the same purpose.
- Assuming standard sizes: APLO and Metro describe made-to-order or custom work. Have the opening surveyed and allow fabrication tolerances.
- Relying on a general certificate: Ask for the document covering the exact profile, size, glass and hardware combination.
- Changing fire-door hardware late: A different lock, closer, hinge or glazing panel can fall outside the tested configuration.
- Ignoring the threshold: Sliding and bi-fold doors need coordinated sill, drainage, floor level and waterproofing details.
- Confusing a frame with a doorset: A pressed-metal frame may require a specified leaf, seals, hardware and wall construction to achieve its claimed performance.
- Using old online specifications: Taylors’ surfaced rating information is old, and other supplier pages may change. Date every quote and certificate.
- Assuming service geography: AAFD describes installation in South East Queensland, while Pro lists trade-centre locations. Confirm current coverage, freight and installer responsibility.
- Treating finish colour as protection: Specify the coating system, preparation, exposure category and maintenance rather than only “black steel.”
Which shortlist category fits your project?
Choose an architectural system when
You want narrow sightlines, a defined glazed aesthetic, custom dimensions, or a feature sliding, French, bi-fold or arched entrance. APLO and Metro are the clearest matches in this shortlist. The decision should turn on the opening, glass, finish, hardware and available documentation rather than on style photographs alone.
Choose a pressed-metal or solid-core package when
The project is a trade or commercial installation that needs a robust frame, standardised hardware preparation, a solid-core leaf or a performance-specific frame. Pro Industries and Taylors describe this category; verify the exact wall and door combination.

What to ask for in your final quote
- Supplier, product family and revision date.
- Overall frame size, clear opening and handing.
- Operation, panel count, stacking or swing clearance.
- Steel profile, gauge or material and finish system.
- Glass type, thickness, safety treatment, single or double glazing and low-E option.
- Threshold, sill, drainage, flashing and waterproofing details.
- Hardware schedule, preparation and supplied accessories.
- Current standards certificates and test reports, including scope and limitations.
- Fire rating and tested wall, size, glazing and installation conditions where applicable.
- Manufacturing lead time, delivery method, installation inclusions, warranty and maintenance requirements.
Because no common dataset establishes comparable prices, delivery times or independent performance rankings for these ten options, the most defensible buying decision is a documented, like-for-like comparison of current project quotes and technical evidence.
