Austrian Power Giants is an award-winning concept for animal-shaped electricity pylons, not a deployed network of giant sculptures. Developed by Austrian Power Grid (APG) with GP designpartners and BauCon, the project explores whether high-voltage infrastructure can become a regional landmark while meeting engineering requirements. Only a stork and a stag have been developed and pre-tested; APG says no concrete implementation is currently planned.

What if a transmission tower looked less like a steel lattice and more like a stork spreading its wings or a stag standing above the landscape? That is the premise behind Austrian Power Giants, a concept developed for APG with GP designpartners and BauCon.

The project reimagines high-voltage pylons as enormous animal-inspired structures. Its purpose is not simply to make electricity infrastructure more decorative: the designers are exploring whether a pylon can satisfy technical and economic demands while also becoming a recognizable regional landmark. The concept received a Red Dot Award for Concept Design 2025 in Electrification and Decarbonisation, but it is important to understand what it is—and what it is not.

Austrian Power Giants is a concept, not a line of working pylons

APG describes Austrian Power Giants as a design concept and says no concrete implementation is currently planned. The project has not been presented as built, approved for a particular transmission line, or deployed across the Austrian grid.

The stork and stag designs were pre-tested statically and electrotechnically to examine technical feasibility. These checks are an early feasibility step, not proof that prototypes have been built or approved for permanent operation.

One giant for each of Austria’s nine federal states

The broader vision calls for one distinctive “Power Giant” associated with each of Austria’s nine federal states. The animal would reflect local wildlife, geography, or regional identity, turning standardized grid infrastructure into something with a stronger sense of place.

Only two animal designs have been developed and pre-tested so far:

Animal Regional association Status
Stork Burgenland, where storks return annually Concept design; pre-tested statically and electrotechnically
Stag Lower Austria, associated with its forested Alpine foothills Concept design; pre-tested statically and electrotechnically

The nine-state vision is broader than the work completed so far. The project sources identify the stork and stag designs, not finalized animal pylons for the other seven states.

How an animal becomes a high-voltage pylon

The visual effect comes from translating an animal’s silhouette and posture into the structural language of a transmission tower. The body, legs, neck, antlers, or wings are part of an attempt to rethink how the tower’s frame and conductor-supporting elements might be arranged.

  • Intricate Design: Highly detailed miniature electric tower model with an intricate lattice structure and multiple platforms.
  • Realistic Appearance: Meticulously crafted to resemble a real-life high-tension transmission tower used for power lines.
  • Sturdy Construction: Made from durable materials to maintain structural integrity and stability.
  • Versatile Display: Can be showcased on a desk, shelf, or as part of a larger diorama or model scene.
  • Dimensions: Measures approximately dimensions in 5 inches in 12 height, ensuring a visually striking presence.

That makes the project more demanding than painting an ordinary pylon or placing a sculpture beside one. A working high-voltage structure must meet structural and electrical requirements. APG’s static and electrotechnical pre-tests examined feasibility, but do not establish approval for permanent operation.

GP designpartners says the pylons’ enormous scale created manufacturing-cost and structural-feasibility challenges. The team sought to balance technology, economics, and design quality. Artistic novelty alone does not show that a concept can be adopted for operational grid construction.

For visual designers, the challenge is to keep a recognizable animal legible at a distance while making the form function as infrastructure. The result sits between product design, architecture, structural engineering, landscape design, and public art.

Why turn a pylon into a regional landmark?

APG frames the project as a response to conventional pylon designs not creating the desired positive public response to new grid projects. It asks whether a more distinctive form could create a different relationship between infrastructure and its setting.

According to APG, the project aims to:

  • connect high-voltage infrastructure with nature-oriented design;
  • give each region a visual symbol linked to its landscape or wildlife;
  • create landmarks that could contribute to regional identity and tourism appeal; and
  • encourage greater public acceptance of grid-expansion projects.

These are project aims, not measured outcomes. The reviewed sources provide no public-opinion study showing that the animal designs changed attitudes toward transmission infrastructure. It is more accurate to say the forms are intended to encourage acceptance than to claim they have already achieved it.

The designers behind the project

APG is the client organization. GP designpartners describes the work as an interdisciplinary effort bringing together aesthetic, technical, and social requirements.

Red Dot recognition and the Singapore exhibition

Austrian Power Giants received the Red Dot Award for Concept Design 2025 in the Electrification and Decarbonisation category. The award recognizes the concept’s attempt to unite electricity infrastructure with a more expressive, nature-linked visual language.

APG announced that miniature models would be exhibited at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore until October 2026. That is the announced exhibition period; the available source does not give an exact closing date or verify that the models remain on display today. Visitors should check the museum’s current schedule and access details before travelling.

Not the same as Iceland’s “Land of Giants”

Austrian Power Giants is easy to confuse with The Land of Giants, an earlier proposal by Choi+Shine Architects for Iceland. Both projects explore transforming electrical infrastructure into monumental landscape forms, but they are separate works.

The Land of Giants used human-shaped pylons and was designed for Iceland. Austrian Power Giants was developed in Austria, uses animal symbolism tied to Austrian regions, and involves APG, GP designpartners, and BauCon. The Icelandic project is a related precedent, not part of the Austrian proposal.

What the project represents

Austrian Power Giants treats a familiar engineering object as a design problem rather than an unavoidable visual constant. Its stork and stag concepts carry regional meaning, but remain concept studies subject to technical and economic constraints.

The most accurate summary is: Austrian Power Giants is an award-winning concept for animal-inspired high-voltage pylons, with two pre-tested designs and no concrete implementation currently planned. Its significance lies in asking whether essential infrastructure can become part of a landscape’s identity rather than being designed only to disappear into it.
