Choose a manual opening roof when movement is occasional, power is difficult to provide, and a person can safely operate a crank or hand mechanism. Choose a motorized system when the roof will move frequently, needs centralized control, or must cover a larger or less accessible area. Choose a retractable design—not merely a motorized louver—when the project needs a genuinely open-sky condition.
“Automatic” and “manual” describe how the roof is operated. “Louvered,” “opening,” and “retractable” describe what the roof physically does. Keeping those terms separate prevents a common specification error: treating every automatic roof as if it slides away, or every opening roof as if it provides a clear view of the sky.

What the terms actually mean
A manual opening roof is moved directly by a person. Documented examples use a hand-operated mechanism or gear crank. The operator decides when to open, close, or adjust the roof and remains responsible for following the system’s operating procedure.
An automatic or motorized roof uses powered drives and controls. “Automatic” may mean only that a motor moves the roof after someone presses a switch or remote button. Some systems add environmental sensors, central controls, building-management integration, travel-limit sensing, emergency stops, or interlocks. Those features are options on particular systems, not attributes that can safely be assumed from the word automatic alone.

A louvered roof rotates blades within its frame. Blades can modulate shade, daylight and airflow while remaining overhead. A retractable roof moves roof sections along guides, folds them, or stacks them away from the opening. It can therefore create a substantially or fully open-sky condition, although tracks, frames or other structural elements may remain visible.
“Opening roof” is an operating description rather than a single mechanism. A supplier may use it for rotating louvers, sliding panels, folding bays or another movement pattern. Ask for a drawing or movement description instead of relying on the headline term.

How each mechanism behaves in use
Manual rotating louvers
With a crank-operated louver roof, a user changes the blade angle from a reachable control point. Closing the blades can provide overhead cover; rotating them can admit more daylight or airflow. Because the blades stay in the frame, this arrangement does not create the same open-sky view as a roof that travels away.
Manual operation avoids a motor, electrical feed and control programming for roof movement. That can simplify a small installation, but it does not eliminate structural, drainage or weather obligations. Someone must be available to operate the mechanism, and the operator needs a clear instruction for what to do when rain or high wind approaches.
Motorized rotating louvers
A motor can rotate louver blades from a switch, remote or central control. The result is still an overhead louver field: powered movement changes the blade angle but does not necessarily remove the roof from the opening. A motorized louver is therefore not automatically a retractable roof.
Some powered systems can accept environmental sensors. If a supplier offers rain or wind response, ask whether the sensor starts closing only, whether it can open again automatically, what happens during a sensor or communication fault, and which operating limits apply to the exact configuration.

Motorized retractable sections
Retractable roofs move bays along fixed guide rails or another guided path and stack them at one end or otherwise clear the opening. Ekra Decor’s described system, for example, uses moving bays, guide rails, controls, travel-limit and position sensing, emergency stops and interlocks, with weather sensors as an option. Those are features of that described system, not a guarantee for every powered roof.
Retracting a roof changes the project from simple blade adjustment to coordinated movement of larger elements. The design must account for rail alignment, drive loads, stopping positions, drainage in both open and closed states, and safe access around moving parts.
Which roof fits which project?
Choose manual operation when
- The roof will move infrequently and an operator is reliably present.
- The operating point can be reached without unsafe climbing or improvised tools.
- Providing power and controls would create disproportionate complexity.
- The project needs adjustable shade or ventilation but not a clear open-sky condition.
- The owner accepts a written procedure for closing or securing the roof during changing weather.
Choose motorized louvers when
- Users need to adjust several zones from one location.
- The roof is too large, high or dispersed for convenient hand operation.
- Opening and closing will happen often during the day.
- Timed, remote or building-control operation is useful.
- Sensor input is genuinely needed and the project can support its power, controls and maintenance.
Choose a retractable roof when
- The brief calls for substantial or full exposure to the sky rather than adjustable shade.
- Furniture, planting, lighting or activities require the roof sections to clear the opening.
- The owner accepts guide rails, stacked roof mass and the associated structural and maintenance planning.
- The proposed configuration can provide the required opening percentage without conflicting with drainage, lighting or services.
A practical selection process
- Define the desired sky condition. Write down whether the goal is shade adjustment, ventilation, a partially open view, or a substantially clear opening. Use a plan or section to show the remaining frame, tracks and stacked panels.
- Map use by zone and time. Mark seating, circulation, cooking or service areas, opening hours and periods when staff can operate the roof. Apollo’s FASGAR planning guidance specifically treats seating zones, opening hours, staff operation, drainage, lighting and maintenance access as linked decisions for hospitality projects.
- Describe the movement, not just the label. Require the supplier to state whether the selected roof rotates, slides, folds or stacks, and to show the complete travel path.
- Check structure and exposure. Confirm support points, span, moving loads, guide alignment and the site’s wind exposure with the project’s structural team. A supplier’s general “all-weather” wording does not replace model-specific engineering limits.
- Plan drainage in every position. Identify where water goes when the roof is closed, partly open, fully open or stacked. Check outlets, gutters, downpipes, overflow paths and interfaces with the surrounding building.
- Plan power and controls for powered systems. Set out the electrical supply, isolators, control stations, remote access, emergency stop, interlocks and behavior after a power interruption. Do not assume a battery backup, manual override or automatic reopening unless it is documented for the selected model.
- Define weather operation. Obtain the manufacturer’s wind and rain limits and write a site procedure identifying who monitors conditions, who is authorized to move the roof, and where people should stand during movement. If sensors are proposed, document their trigger, delay, reset and fault behavior.
- Design maintenance access before approval. Show how staff or technicians will reach drives, hinges, louvers, rails, drains, sensors and control equipment. A roof that cannot be safely reached will be difficult to keep reliable, regardless of its operating mode.
- Request configuration-specific commercial documents. Ask for the exact warranty, service requirements, access equipment, exclusions and lifecycle-cost assumptions for the selected span and controls. Category-level descriptions cannot establish costs for a particular project.
Weather, water and control questions
Rain and wind response is one of the largest differences between a convincing specification and a vague sales description. A roof may be able to remain closed in rain while still requiring a defined procedure for opening, closing or securing it as conditions change. The drainage design must work with the roof in each relevant position.
For a sensor-equipped system, distinguish four separate functions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Detection: the sensor identifies rain, wind or another condition.
- Decision: programmed logic determines whether movement should begin.
- Movement: the drive travels to a safe position and stops at its limits.
- Human override: authorized staff can stop or operate the roof when conditions or system faults require it.
Ask what happens if a sensor loses power, a communication link fails, an emergency stop is pressed, or the roof is partway through travel when power is interrupted. These questions are more useful than treating “automatic weather response” as a universal feature.
Hospitality and public-use planning
Restaurants, cafés and other hospitality venues often need different roof behavior over different zones. A dining area may benefit from adjustable shade during service, while an event zone may need a clear sky after panels retract. A single roof type across the whole footprint can force compromises that a mixed strategy avoids.

Plan fixed, louvered and retractable areas against the operating schedule. Identify where staff can reach a manual crank, where guests must never be near moving panels, and how furniture or umbrellas affect travel paths. Lighting must remain serviceable when panels are stacked, and drainage must not discharge into seating or circulation routes.
Staff training should cover normal opening and closing, stopping movement, weather shutdown, manual recovery after power loss and reporting a fault. The written procedure should identify the responsible role rather than assuming any employee can operate the roof.
Structure, access and maintenance
Manual systems are mechanically simpler in operation, but they still depend on aligned frames, sound bearings or hinges, clean drainage and an accessible operating point. Motorized systems add drives, wiring, control equipment and potentially sensors, all of which need inspection and replacement access.
Retractable systems add guide rails and moving bays. Keep the rail path free of furniture, signs, branches and other obstructions. Include inspection points for travel limits, position sensing, emergency stops and interlocks when those features are specified. Confirm how technicians can reach the stacked zone without standing on unsupported roof elements.
Maintenance frequency, warranty duration and lifecycle cost are not established consistently across the available product descriptions. Treat them as procurement questions for the exact configuration, not as assumptions based on whether the roof is manual or automatic.
Do not confuse terrace roofs with rooflights
Automatic opening vents and manually assisted roof-access hatches are a separate rooflight category. VELUX Commercial describes products in that category for functions such as smoke and heat ventilation or roof access. Those safety-related products should not be used as a proxy for a manually or automatically operated terrace roof.

Smoke-control equipment has a defined life-safety purpose and its own design, controls and approvals. A louvered pergola or retractable enclosure intended for shade, ventilation or outdoor use does not become smoke-ventilation equipment merely because it opens automatically.

Apollo’s FASGAR guide presents fixed-versus-retractable planning around permanent cover versus open-sky operation and highlights power, controls, membrane movement, drainage, maintenance access and strong-weather procedures. Use that as project-planning advice, not as a universal code requirement.
OpenAire describes custom retractable enclosures as integrated building systems with motorized controls and optional environmental sensors. The final arrangement still depends on the project’s structure, span, climate and operating needs.
JY Outdoor explicitly separates manual rotating louvers, motorized operation and retractable movement. Louvretec Australia’s comparison, published August 6, 2026, likewise uses sky exposure and weather control to distinguish rotating opening-louver roofs from retractable roofs. It is a manufacturer comparison of its own systems, not independent comparative testing.

Common specification mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating “automatic” as “sensor-controlled”
Fix: Ask whether the motor starts only from a switch or remote, or whether the quoted configuration includes sensors, programmed logic and documented weather response.

Mistake: treating every opening roof as retractable
Fix: Request the movement type and maximum clear opening. Rotating blades remain overhead; retractable sections travel away.
Mistake: selecting by product category alone
Fix: Evaluate the exact span, climate, structure, drainage, controls, access and operating procedure proposed for the site.
Mistake: relying on “all-weather” wording
Fix: Obtain engineered wind and rain limits, sensor behavior and the required shutdown procedure in writing.
Mistake: leaving maintenance until after installation
Fix: Draw access to drives, rails, drains, sensors and control panels before approving the roof layout.
Questions to put in the project brief
- Does “automatic” mean motorized operation only, or are sensors and automatic weather response included?
- Does the selected roof rotate its blades, retract its panels, or support both movements?
- What clear-opening or open-sky percentage does this configuration provide?
- What electrical supply, control points, emergency stops, interlocks and power-loss behavior are required?
- What are the model-specific wind and rain limits, drainage routes and operating procedures?
- How are seating, lighting, circulation and staff access affected when the roof is open or stacked?
- How will technicians reach rails, drives, drains, sensors and limit switches?
- What warranty, service schedule and lifecycle-cost information applies to this exact configuration?
Bottom line
Manual and automatic describe operation, not the roof’s physical opening pattern. A manual or motorized louver can adjust shade and airflow while staying overhead; a retractable system is the option for moving roof sections aside and creating open sky. Select only after documenting the desired opening, movement type, weather limits, drainage, structure, controls, staffing and maintenance access for the actual site.
