Build a stylized wolf head from a ball of polymer clay by shaping the muzzle and jaw first, then adding the eyes, ears, neck, and layered fur. The sequence below follows Leia Gatch’s Make: tutorial, a moderate project estimated at 1–2 hours; it can stand alone or become the wolf head for a character or art doll.
Gather the clay and tools
Gatch’s tutorial names Super Sculpey polymer clay and a wooden skewer as the starting materials. Set out small and large ball tools, a needle tool, a paintbrush, rubbing alcohol, an oven-safe tray, and napkins. Magnifying glasses are optional. These tools support shaping, smoothing, and texturing the face; they are not a comparison of competing clays.
Keep photo references nearby. Gatch recommends observing the subtle ridges and structures of a wolf’s head rather than relying on fur lines alone to suggest the animal.

Sculpt the muzzle and jowls
- Make the head form. Shape a ball of clay and mount it on a wooden skewer to make the head easier to handle while sculpting.
- Pull out the snout. Draw clay forward from the face to establish the muzzle.
- Add the lower jaw separately. Shape an oblong piece and attach it beneath the muzzle. Its slight overhang creates the wolf-like jowl.
- Build the bridge and mouth. Add clay along the nose bridge and around the mouth, then blend the joins with a ball tool. Smooth rough patches with a paintbrush and rubbing alcohol, as Gatch suggests.
Shape the eyes and expression
- Form two eye sockets in the face.
- Place a small clay ball in each socket for an eye.
- Roll two matching lengths of clay and shape them into eyelids around the eyes. Matching the pieces helps keep the expression balanced.
- Add the cheek and brow area to define the face. Use the reference image to guide the contours rather than making both sides mechanically identical.
Add ears, neck, and layered hair
- Mark where the ears will sit before attaching them, so their placement suits the head’s proportions.
- Make two triangular ears with rounded tips and attach them at the marks.
- Build out the neck beneath the head.
- Roll layered, sausage-shaped sections of clay around the head to form the hair. Blend the base of each section into the head so the layers attach securely.
Carve the fur texture
Use a needle tool to incise fur lines into the layered hair. Work with controlled, shallow strokes: the aim is to define the direction and texture of the fur without cutting too deeply into the clay. Vary the lines to follow the form of each section instead of drawing uniform grooves around the head.

Bake according to the clay’s instructions
Gatch reports that she bakes her Super Sculpey art dolls at 250°F for 25 minutes on an oven-safe tray with napkins, then lets the piece rest for an hour before handling to avoid cracking. Those figures describe her method in a tutorial first published August 27, 2015, and updated July 15, 2022—not a universal polymer-clay schedule. Follow the current package directions for the specific clay you use; the tutorial’s settings have not been independently checked against current manufacturer instructions or other formulations.
