The entries can begin with a movement, an object, a person, a concept or a form of popular culture. A chapter may explain why a design school mattered, trace the career of an architect, or use a familiar product or game to show how values become embedded in form. The title’s leap from Bauhaus to YouTube signals the breadth: the book is interested in both canonical modernism and the platforms through which contemporary life is experienced.
Sudjic was director of the Design Museum in London and writes as a critic and editor rather than as a neutral cataloguer. That standpoint matters. He chooses what deserves attention and links subjects according to his own sense of significance. The result is a guided conversation about design, with detours and strong points of view, rather than a uniform sequence of definitions.
Is it a design dictionary or encyclopedia?

An entry can assume that you will follow a reference to another subject, look at an object, or continue thinking after the essay ends. It is therefore possible to disagree with an emphasis without treating the book as inaccurate by definition. Selection is part of its purpose. If you want a complete chronology of modern design, a technical glossary or a sourcebook with exhaustive citations, choose a reference work alongside it. If you want an intelligent guide to why certain subjects matter, the essayistic format is the point.
How is the book organized?
Architectural Digest reports 39 essays, with every letter represented at least once. The arrangement is alphabetical, but the contents are not one-entry-per-letter in a rigid sense. Some letters gather several related subjects, allowing Sudjic to place an everyday object beside a designer, movement or critical idea.

The structure is useful when you want a non-linear route. The trade-off is that the alphabet can interrupt historical sequence. A movement’s causes and consequences may be separated across letters, so readers seeking a continuous timeline should make their own notes or pair the book with a chronological history.

Design movements and principles
Bauhaus provides the obvious anchor, but the book does not stop at school history. Entries on postmodernism and critical design open questions about modernism’s promises, the politics of taste and the consequences—good and bad—of designed environments. Sudjic’s approach encourages you to ask what a movement changed in production, housing, communication or consumer behavior, not merely to memorize dates and names.

Objects and systems of everyday life
Blueprints, cars and chairs demonstrate how design operates at different scales. A blueprint is an instrument for making and communicating a building; a car is a machine, a status symbol and a planning force; a chair is a functional object that can also express a material, an ergonomic theory or an institutional style. By placing such examples near one another, the book shows that “design” includes systems of use and meaning as well as finished forms.
Architects and designers
The essays become, in places, compact portraits or histories of practitioners. Alphabetical variety can feel scattered when a reader expects a single argument about “the modern world.” In a March 2015 review, Architectural Record’s Aleksandr Bierig praised some of the personal material but argued that the topics can seem uneven and that the book does not fully settle which modern world it aims to explain. The review also judged some design-history entries thinly researched.
