Banana Pictures (香蕉影业) is the English name used for a Shanghai film company associated with movies including Us and Them and Sheep Without a Shepherd. Company summaries describe it as established in October 2015 and connected to Shanghai Banana Project Culture Development Co., Ltd. Its name is ambiguous, and the available sources do not establish whether the Chinese company is operating today.

The English-language overview identifies Wang Sicong as founder and Wei Xiandong as a key executive. These are also company-summary claims rather than confirmation of current roles.
It is not the UK company with a similar name
COOL BANANA PICTURES LTD is a separate UK-registered company, incorporated in 2019 and described as dormant by Companies House. That UK record does not establish the status of the Shanghai film company.

What films is Banana Pictures associated with?
The company is associated with the 2018 film Us and Them (后来的我们) and with Sheep Without a Shepherd. The English company overview describes Banana Pictures as an investor in Us and Them; a 2020 announcement attributed to POSYDON Entertainment and Banana Pictures calls it a key backer of that film and says the company was “behind” Sheep Without a Shepherd. These descriptions support saying the company backed or was associated with the films, not that it solely produced them.

How did Banana Pictures support emerging filmmakers?
Company descriptions present the discovery and development of young directors and screenwriters as a focus. The English overview names an “Excavation Program” for directors and a “Fulfilling Program” for screenwriters. A 2020 company-attributed announcement likewise describes the company as focused on young directors and writers.
The Chinese company overview reports that the first “Banana New Director Digging Program” received 840 film submissions involving 812 directors; 16 directors were selected in April 2018, and awards totaled 640万元. These are historical figures reported by that secondary overview, not current program statistics or independently audited results.

What was the POSYDON partnership?
On August 5, 2020, POSYDON Entertainment and Banana Pictures announced a partnership to co-produce films aimed at Chinese audiences. The announcement called it Banana Pictures’ first US co-production deal. It establishes what the companies announced at the time, but does not establish that the partnership continued or that its announced film slate was completed.
In the announcement, Daphne Briggs, identified as an executive with Propaganda GEM, described as a Wanda Media company, said: “This is an exciting partnership. There is great value in producing films that will perform strongly in China,” The comment is a participant’s promotional statement, not an independent assessment of Banana Pictures or the Chinese film market.

Is Banana Pictures still operating, and where can you watch its films?
The sources do not resolve the Chinese company’s present operating or financial status. A December 9, 2020 Jiemian News report covered a screenwriter payment dispute and reported that CEO Wei Xiandong said the company lacked funds that year. That is historical context; it does not establish the company’s current finances or whether it is still operating.
