Banquette Seating Progress: A Streamlined Back, Added Trim, and a Cushion on Hold

Kristi Linauer’s banquette takes a calmer direction: no diamond or square tufting, a streamlined upholstered back, added bench trim, and a cushion planned to tuck beneath a back mounted two inches above the seat.

The biggest change in this banquette project was deciding what not to build. Kristi Linauer considered diamond and square tufting for the seat back, then rejected both because the room already had so many competing lines. She chose a simpler upholstered back instead, added trim to the bench, and left the seat cushion for a later step.

That choice keeps the banquette visually calm while leaving a practical detail to solve: the back is planned to sit two inches above the seat so the eventual cushion can tuck beneath it. The result is progress, not a finished installation, and the remaining cushion, back finish, and table relationship still matter to how the nook will work.

The design problem was the seat back

“I can’t tell you how much I wrestled with the design of this seat back,” Kristi Linauer wrote in her progress update. The difficult part was not simply choosing a fabric or fastening upholstery. It was deciding how much pattern the room could absorb.

Tufting was the first direction under consideration. Diamond tufting and square tufting would both have introduced a network of repeated lines across the upholstered panel. In a room that already contained many linear elements, those lines risked making the banquette look busy rather than intentional.

Linauer ultimately abandoned tufting. That is the central decision in the update: the seat back would be upholstered in a straightforward, streamlined form instead of carrying a geometric buttoned pattern. The change is less about following a furniture trend than about editing the visual field of the room.

Why the simpler upholstered back makes sense

A plain upholstered back gives the banquette one broad, quiet surface. Without diamonds, squares, or button channels, the eye can read the bench as part of the architecture instead of as another patterned object competing with the table, walls, and surrounding trim.

“Streamlined” does not mean unfinished or characterless. The shape, fabric, edge treatment, and relationship to the bench top still determine whether the back looks tailored. In this project, restraint is the decorative decision. The back is meant to provide comfort and softness without adding another grid of lines.

That approach also leaves room for the bench trim to carry some of the detail. Rather than putting all of the visual emphasis into upholstery, Linauer added a defined edge to the built-in itself.

Trim gives the bench more definition

The update notes trim added along the edge of the bench top and along the bottom. Those two locations create a clear boundary around the seat base. The upper trim frames the transition between the seat surface and the surrounding construction; the lower trim gives the base a finished architectural line instead of allowing it to disappear into the wall or floor.

Trim is especially useful on a built-in because small gaps and changes in plane are more visible than they would be on a freestanding chair. A crisp edge can make the bench read as deliberate millwork even when the upholstery remains deliberately simple.

For a painting-focused finish, the trim is also where surface preparation matters most. MDF and wood edges can telegraph dents, open seams, or uneven caulk under paint. Sanding, filling, and careful caulking are not decorative extras; they determine whether the painted outline looks sharp once light hits it from the side.

The cushion is intentionally the next phase

The seat cushion had not been made when the progress was reported. Linauer’s plan was to mount the upholstered back two inches above the seat, leaving enough room for the cushion to tuck underneath it. That detail affects the finished appearance: the cushion can meet the back cleanly without forcing the upholstery panel to sit directly on the seat platform.

Because the cushion was deferred, the project should be understood as structurally and visually advanced but not complete. The final comfort, seat height, and junction between cushion and back will only be apparent after the cushion is fabricated and installed.

Leaving the cushion until the back position is settled is a sensible sequencing choice for a built-in. The back establishes the available seat depth and the tuck-under relationship. A cushion made too early could force a compromise in the back location or create an unwanted gap.

Questions the finished nook still needs to answer

Readers of the related banquette guide raised practical questions that apply here as well. One asked, “I would like to know how the back side of the banquette looks.” Another wrote, “Would love to see a pic of the area with your table.” Those are not merely requests for additional photographs. They identify the areas most likely to be overlooked in a progress update.

What happens behind the back?

A front view cannot show whether the rear of the banquette is fully enclosed, finished with the same wall treatment, or left as a serviceable construction surface. The back side matters if the bench is visible from an adjacent room, if the table can be moved away from the wall, or if someone needs access to the area for cleaning and repairs.

How does the table relate to the bench?

The table determines whether the seat is easy to enter, whether diners can pull out comfortably, and whether the banquette feels proportionate. A photograph showing the complete nook would reveal the distance between table edge and seat, the amount of walking space around the bench, and whether the simple back keeps the composition balanced.

Where does the cushion meet the back?

The two-inch raised-back plan is intended to produce a tucked connection, but the actual result depends on cushion thickness, upholstery compression, and the precision of the seat platform. A close view of that joint would answer a question that a wide room photograph cannot.

Comparable planning dimensions from a separate DIY guide

Planning item Guidance in the October 20, 2020 tutorial How to use it
Width per person About 24 inches Use as a starting point for estimating how many diners can sit comfortably.
Seat depth 16–20 inches Balance sitting comfort with the room left for the table and circulation.
Typical finished seat height 18 inches Compare the completed seat, including the cushion, with the table height.
Frame height in that project 16 inches The lower frame allowed room for a 2-inch cushion.

The distinction between frame height and finished seat height is important. A 16-inch frame is not automatically an 18-inch seat; the cushion thickness supplies the difference in that example. If your cushion compresses substantially, measure the seated height rather than relying only on its uncompressed specification.

Layout checks before fastening a built-in

The same tutorial placed its bench against a wall to free walking space behind the table in a tight breakfast nook. That is a layout strategy, not a guarantee that every room will gain space in the same way. Before fixing a bench in place, mark the proposed seat and table footprint on the floor and test the paths people will use to enter and leave.

  • Confirm that diners can slide into the bench without colliding with the table or a nearby wall.
  • Check the distance needed to pull out chairs on the opposite side.
  • Measure the finished seat height against the table, not just the bare framing.
  • Use a level on the floor and the bench platform, especially where the floor is uneven.
  • Plan support wherever plywood sheets meet so the seam cannot flex under use.

These checks protect the design decision Linauer made at the upholstery stage. A visually quiet back will not rescue a nook that is difficult to enter or leaves too little room to move around the table.

Materials and tools for a comparable build

Sprucing Up Mamahood’s guide lists the following materials: 2×4 pine boards, 3/4-inch plywood, MDF trim, shiplap, screws, nails, construction adhesive, spackling, sandpaper, paint, and caulk. The list describes that separate project and should not be read as a record of what Linauer used.

Its tool list includes a laser level, chalk line, level, circular saw, drill, impact driver, nail gun, compressor, and caulk gun. A laser level can help transfer a consistent line across a wall; a circular saw can cut sheet goods when a larger saw setup is unavailable. Neither tool is evidence of the equipment used for Linauer’s banquette.

A finish-oriented sequence

If you are adapting that materials list for your own painted built-in, keep the finish stages tied to the construction stages. Install and secure the framing first, add the plywood and trim, fill fastener holes with spackling, sand the visible surfaces, and caulk intentional joints before painting. The cleaner those transitions are before the first coat, the less likely the trim will look wavy or interrupted afterward.

Shiplap and MDF do not present identical surfaces. MDF trim generally needs particular attention at cut edges, while shiplap introduces repeated seams that can become strong horizontal lines. Decide whether those lines support the room or recreate the visual busyness that led Linauer away from tufting.

Decisions to make before copying the look

The progress update offers a design principle rather than a universal prescription: remove detail when the room already has enough competing lines, then add character where it improves the architecture. Use the following questions to adapt the idea instead of duplicating it mechanically.

Built-in or freestanding?

A built-in can use a wall efficiently and create a continuous architectural element, but it fixes the seat location and makes later changes harder. Freestanding seating is easier to move and replace, though it may consume more floor area and will not provide the same integrated appearance.

Upholstered or hard back?

An upholstered back supplies softness and support. A painted or paneled back can emphasize the room’s millwork and may be simpler to clean. The right choice depends on how much pattern, texture, and maintenance the nook can handle.

How much cushion?

Cushion thickness changes the finished seat height, the amount of visible upholstery, and the way the back junction reads. Treat it as a dimensional part of the design rather than an accessory selected after construction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should the trim speak?

Trim can frame the bench top, anchor the bottom, outline a panel, or echo existing casing. Concentrating it at a few strong edges often produces a calmer result than layering profiles everywhere.

What this progress update establishes

  1. The tufting concept was rejected after considering diamond and square patterns.
  2. The seat back moved to a simpler upholstered treatment to avoid adding more lines to an already line-heavy room.
  3. Trim was added at the bench top edge and bottom to give the built-in additional definition.
  4. The cushion remained unfinished, with the back planned two inches above the seat so the cushion could tuck underneath.
  5. Comparable planning dimensions come from a separate October 20, 2020 DIY tutorial and must be adapted to the actual room.

The banquette is therefore at a useful midpoint: its visual language has been resolved, while the comfort and final fit still depend on the cushion and the way the completed nook works with the table. The strongest lesson is not that tufting is wrong. It is that a built-in earns a better result when every line—upholstery, trim, wall treatment, and furniture placement—has a reason to be there.
