The banquette seat was built as a weekend project, and it already included a practical storage feature: a lift-up top running on a continuous hinge along the back edge. The dining-area makeover was not finished, however. Trim, primer, paint, toe-kick work, the cushion, and the planned diamond-tufted arched back were still future steps when Kristi Linauer published the update.
That distinction matters if you are using the post as inspiration. It documents a construction milestone and a design direction, not a complete build plan, finished-room reveal, or current cost guide.

How the storage seat was designed to open
The distinctive functional detail is the hinged lid. Linauer says she installed a continuous hinge along the back edge of the top. A continuous hinge is also commonly called a piano hinge; it runs for much of the lid’s length instead of using two or three separated hinges.
The source does not state the hinge’s length, material, thickness, load rating, screw pattern, or model. It also does not provide construction drawings or explain how the lid was supported. Trim and toe-kick work
Trim was still on the to-do list, as was finishing the toe-kick area. These details often determine whether a built-in bench looks like furniture or like an unfinished box, but the post does not specify the trim profile, base height, material, or installation method. Primer and paint
Priming and painting had not happened yet. Because the bench had not yet been primed or painted, the update leaves the most visible finish choices open. Before buying paint, identify what each exposed surface is made from and whether it has been sealed, filled, or previously coated. The correct preparation can differ between a smooth panel, filled fastener holes, raw trim, and a repaired wall.

Make a finish sample on the same type of surface, especially if the banquette will meet cabinetry or a painted wall. Check the sample in daylight and at night, because a color that visually recedes during the day may become a strong feature under artificial lighting. Decide whether the toe-kick should blend with the bench, match adjacent millwork, or deliberately contrast; the source records that the toe-kick still needed finishing but does not state the intended color.
Protect the hinge and any moving gap from paint buildup.
