Two ornate thrift-store lamps became the starting point for Olivia’s bedside lighting: the project account reports buying each lamp for $5, painting the bodies Paris Grey, highlighting the raised ornament with Pure White, and building an aged finish with clear and dark wax. New white shades and the original harps completed the makeover. The bedroom itself was still progressing, with a canopy bed, a rug over hardwood, and other finish selections underway rather than a documented final reveal.

This guide explains that finish in a way you can reproduce on your own lamp while allowing for the measurements the account does not provide. The project is documented in Baroque Table Lamp Makeover + Olivia’s Bedroom Progress; the specific shade dimensions, fitter type, lamp model, publication date, and purchase links are not stated there, so those details must be checked on your lamp.

What the makeover changed

The lamps were selected for ornate, feminine Baroque-style detailing and for the visual character associated with more expensive decorative lighting. Their value in the room comes from the relief: scrolls, beads, leaves, or other raised motifs catch a second color much more effectively than a flat modern base would.

The reported finish has three visual layers:

  • Paris Grey chalk paint: a soft, muted ground color over the existing lamp surface.
  • Pure White dry brushing: a small amount of lighter paint catches the high points without filling the recesses.
  • Clear wax followed by dark wax: clear wax protects and conditions the painted surface; a limited amount of dark wax settles into detail and gives the finish an aged appearance.

The harps were put back on, and inexpensive white replacement shades were added. The shades are important to the result, but their size and fitter are not specified, so copying the look requires measuring your own hardware rather than ordering by appearance alone.

Materials and what each one does

Material or tool Purpose in the project What to verify before starting
Two ornate thrifted table lamps The decorative bases being refinished Check that the body is stable, the socket is secure, and the cord has no visible damage
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Paris Grey Base color over the lamp body Confirm the surface is clean and free of loose coating before painting
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, Pure White Dry-brushed highlight on raised ornament Use a separate clean brush and remove excess paint before touching the lamp
Annie Sloan Clear Wax First wax layer and a buffer for the darker wax Work in thin sections so excess does not pool in ornament
Annie Sloan Dark Wax Aged color in recesses and around details Test on an inconspicuous area; the amount controls how dark the result becomes
Two round-tipped detail brushes Painting scrolls, beads, corners, and other small areas Choose sizes that can reach recesses without flooding them
Wax brush Spreading clear and dark wax Keep it clean between wax colors
Paper towels and clean, dry cotton rags Removing excess paint or wax and buffing Use lint-free fabric for the final buff where possible
Replacement white shades Finishing the pair and softening the light Measure the harp, fitter, top and bottom diameters, and height before purchase

The project account reports a $5 purchase price for each thrifted lamp. That is an anecdotal cost for that purchase, not a typical market price or a promise that similar lamps will cost the same today.

Before you paint: inspect, measure, and clean

Unplug and inspect the electrical parts

Remove the plug from the wall before taking off a shade or harp. Look at the socket, switch, cord, and plug. Do not paint the socket, switch, plug, or cord. If insulation is cracked, copper is visible, the socket is loose, or the lamp flickers, repair or replace the electrical components before decorating the body. A cosmetic makeover is not a substitute for electrical repair.

Record how the harp and shade fit

Photograph the lamp before disassembly and note how the harp attaches. Measure the harp height, the shade’s top and bottom diameters, the shade height, and the fitter opening that sits on the socket or harp. Replacement shades are not universal: a shade can look proportionate yet fail to seat on the existing fitter.

Clean without saturating the lamp

Remove dust, grease, and loose debris with a dry cloth first. Follow with a lightly damp cloth if the finish allows it, then let the lamp dry completely. Keep moisture away from the socket and wiring. Decorative grooves hold dust; a small detail brush can loosen it before painting.

Step-by-step Baroque lamp makeover

1. Remove the shade and harp

Take off the old shade, loosen the finial, and remove the harp according to the lamp’s hardware. Keep every small part in a labeled container. If a harp is tight, do not twist the socket or force the wiring; stabilize the lamp body while loosening the hardware.

2. Protect the socket and cord

Mask the socket, switch, threaded rod, and any area where the shade or harp must slide. Cover the cord and work surface. Paint belongs on the decorative body, not on moving or electrical parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Apply Paris Grey as the base

Stir the Paris Grey chalk paint and apply a thin coat with a detail brush. Follow the contours of the ornament instead of pushing a heavy load into recesses. Let the coat dry according to the paint maker’s label, then inspect the coverage. A second thin coat is preferable to one thick coat when the original finish is dark or glossy.

Keep the brush moving around beads and scrolls so the raised pattern remains legible. If paint gathers in a crevice, remove the excess while it is still workable rather than allowing a ridge to dry there.

4. Dry-brush Pure White onto the raised details

Use a separate round-tipped detail brush. Load only a small amount of Pure White, then wipe most of it onto a paper towel. Lightly skim the brush across the relief. The bristles should touch the high points and leave Paris Grey visible in the recesses.

Build the highlight gradually. It is easier to add another pass to a scroll or bead than to remove white paint from a deep groove. Rotate the lamp as you work so the highlight follows the direction of the relief rather than appearing as random spots.

5. Add clear wax and buff away excess

Apply Annie Sloan Clear Wax in a thin, even layer with the wax brush. Work in manageable sections, pressing the wax into the painted surface but avoiding thick deposits in ornament. Remove excess with a clean, dry cotton rag and buff gently once the surface has set as directed on the product label.

Clear wax is also the reported buffer between the paint and the dark wax. It gives you a less abrupt way to move or soften the darker color while you work. This is the project account’s technique, not a guarantee that every paint, substrate, or climate will behave identically; always follow the current product instructions.

6. Use dark wax for the aged effect

Place a small amount of Dark Wax around the relief and in selected recesses. Wipe back the high points so the dark color remains where shadows would naturally collect. Concentrate on corners, undersides, and deep ornament instead of coating the entire lamp evenly.

The account describes clear wax before dark wax as producing a subtler aged effect and dark wax alone as producing a darker result. Treat that as a reported artistic choice. If the first pass is too strong, use a clean rag to lift it while workable, or soften it with more clear wax as permitted by the product directions.

7. Let the finish cure before reassembly

Do not rush to install the shade as soon as the surface feels dry. Waxed finishes need time to harden, and the label’s curing guidance takes priority. Keep the lamp where dust, children, and pets will not disturb the surface during that period.

Choosing the finish level

Approach Visual result Work and materials Best use
Paris Grey only Quiet, single-color base that leaves the sculptural form to provide contrast Least work; requires the grey paint and preparation tools A restrained look or a lamp whose ornament is already strong
Paris Grey plus Pure White dry brush Sharper relief, with the high points picked out in white Adds a second paint and careful, light passes Showing off scrolls, beads, leaves, and other raised details
Grey, white dry brush, clear wax, then dark wax Layered color with shadowed recesses and an aged character Most control and the most steps; requires both waxes and separate cloths The documented Baroque-style makeover and a deliberately antiqued finish
Dark wax without a clear-wax buffer Deeper, darker aging with less margin for correction Fewer wax steps but more risk of an overpowering result Only when a strongly aged appearance is wanted and tested first

How the lamps fit Olivia’s bedroom progress

The bedside lamps were one element of a room that was still being assembled. The project account describes a canopy bed, a cozy rug placed over hardwood, and a beaded semi-flush ceiling light selected for an eight-foot ceiling. Paint, wallpaper, Roman shades, and bedding were listed as choices or work in progress, not as a verified completed room reveal.

That distinction matters when you use the makeover as inspiration. A bedside lamp can be finished before the wall treatment or bedding is decided, but its undertones still affect those later choices. Paris Grey and white highlights are relatively adaptable; the dark wax adds warmth and visual age. Place one finished lamp beside sample fabrics or wallpaper before completing the pair if you are uncertain about the balance.

Coordinate scale, not just color

A canopy bed and ornate lamps both create vertical and decorative emphasis. Keep the lamp shades broad enough to feel stable on the nightstands without crowding the bed posts. Because the original account gives no dimensions, use your own nightstand width, mattress height, harp height, and shade measurements to establish proportion.

Use the ceiling fixture as a separate lighting layer

The beaded semi-flush fixture was chosen with an eight-foot ceiling in mind. A ceiling light handles general illumination; the table lamps provide lower, localized light at the bedside. Matching every finish is unnecessary. Repeating one detail—such as white shade fabric or a restrained metallic accent elsewhere—can make the layers feel intentional without turning the room into a matched set.

Common problems and practical fixes

Paint looks streaky or translucent

Uneven coverage usually comes from a dirty surface, a heavy first coat, or stopping at different points on adjacent sections. Let the coat dry, smooth obvious ridges, clean the brush, and add a thin, even layer. Do not compensate by flooding the recesses.

The white highlight disappears

If Pure White is too thin or the brush is too wet, it will not catch the relief. Remove more paint from the brush, allow the base to dry fully, and skim the raised edges again. The goal is contact with the high points, not opaque coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dark wax is too heavy

Wipe immediately with a clean rag while workable. If the finish allows it, a little clear wax can help move and soften the dark layer. Work in small areas and test the technique underneath the lamp before treating the front-facing details.

The replacement shade will not fit

Stop rather than forcing the fitter onto the socket or harp. Recheck the fitter opening, harp dimensions, and shade measurements. The documented project does not state those specifications, so a visually similar shade is not proof of compatibility.

The lamp feels unstable after reassembly

Remove the shade and check that the harp, finial, and any threaded hardware are seated correctly. Make sure the lamp’s base is flat on the nightstand. Do not use extra paint, wax, or improvised spacers to compensate for a loose electrical component.

A concise checklist for your own pair

  • Photograph and label the hardware before disassembly.
  • Measure the harp, fitter, shade height, and shade diameters.
  • Unplug the lamp and inspect the cord, plug, socket, and switch.
  • Mask all electrical and moving parts.
  • Clean and dry the decorative body.
  • Apply Paris Grey in thin coats.
  • Dry-brush Pure White only on raised details.
  • Apply and buff clear wax before attempting dark wax.
  • Test dark wax on a hidden area and build it slowly.
  • Allow the finish to cure before reinstalling the harp and shade.
  • Check shade clearance, stability, and bulb limits before use.
