A basic throw pillow is a decorative cushion used on a sofa, chair, bed, or bench. It can be sold as a complete pillow, as a cover without an insert, or as separate cover-and-insert components. Before buying, verify the finished dimensions, whether an insert is included, the shell and fill materials, whether the cover removes, and the care instructions for that exact product.
What a basic throw pillow includes
“Throw pillow” describes the decorative cushion category, not one universal construction. A listing can refer to the outer textile cover, the inner cushion, or both. That distinction affects the price, the look you can achieve, and how easily you can clean or refresh the pillow.

The cover
The cover is the visible textile shell. It may have a zipper, envelope opening, buttons, or a fixed sewn closure. A removable cover lets you change the color or pattern while keeping the same insert, and it can make cleaning simpler. A fixed cover may have a cleaner appearance but requires you to follow the care directions for the entire pillow.
The insert
The insert is the stuffed inner cushion that gives the cover its volume. Some products include it automatically; others let you order the cover alone. Spoonflower documents both with-insert and cover-only configurations in its throw-pillow line (Spoonflower’s throw-pillow information). The finished dimensions
Dimensions describe the pillow or cover as made, not merely the size category used in a product title. Check the listing’s stated width and height, and note whether those measurements apply to the cover, the insert, or the assembled pillow. A square “20-inch” pillow, for example, is not automatically a suitable insert for every cover labeled 20 inches; construction, seams, and the desired fullness also matter.
Choose between a complete pillow and separate components
Start by identifying what you already own and what you want to replace. Buying a cover-only product makes sense when you have a usable insert. Buying an insert separately is useful when a cover is flat, the old fill has lost loft, or you want to change the firmness without replacing the textile.

Do not infer inclusion from a photograph. A styled image can show a filled pillow even when the purchase is cover-only. Look for explicit wording such as “includes insert,” “cover only,” or a selectable insert option.
How to choose the right insert size
Use the cover’s actual finished measurements as your starting point. Valvive’s sizing guide says an insert may match the cover or be one size larger for a fuller appearance (Valvive’s throw-pillow insert guide, published August 31, 2026). Other seller guides recommend going two inches larger. Those are styling recommendations, not a universal standard, so the maker’s own fit guidance takes priority.

Match the insert to the look you want
- Same-size insert: A 20-by-20-inch cover with a 20-by-20-inch insert is a conservative choice when you want the cover to lie relatively flat.
- One size larger: A 20-by-20-inch cover with a 22-by-22-inch insert can create a fuller, more rounded appearance if the cover’s construction allows it.
- Two inches larger: Some seller guides suggest this amount for extra fullness, but it can overfill a tightly sewn cover or stress the closure. Treat it as an option to verify, not a rule.
When a cover is rectangular, size the insert to both dimensions rather than increasing only one side. For example, a 14-by-20-inch cover needs an insert intended for that proportion; substituting a square insert can leave corners empty or create bunching. If the listing gives a specific insert size, use that instruction instead of applying a generic formula.
Measure an insert you already own
- Remove the insert from its cover.
- Lay it flat without compressing it and measure the width and height.
- Compare those measurements with the new cover’s stated finished dimensions.
- Account for the insert’s current loft: a compact or flattened cushion may measure correctly but still look sparse inside a new cover.
Compare fill and shell materials
Fill determines how the cushion compresses and recovers, while the shell fabric affects the hand feel, appearance, and care requirements. Standard Fiber describes polyester fill options in its pillow materials information (Standard Fiber’s pillow information). Spoonflower identifies polyester components in its own covers and fills (Spoonflower’s product details). These descriptions apply to those manufacturers’ products; they are not a specification for every throw pillow.

- What material is the fill, and is the percentage or blend stated?
- Is the insert described as soft, medium, firm, lofty, or another feel?
- Does the listing give a finished insert size, or only a nominal size?
- Are there instructions for restoring the shape after unpacking?
Words such as “plush” or “cloud-like” are marketing descriptions, not standardized measurements. If feel matters, prioritize a listing that identifies the fill and provides a clear return policy rather than relying on the adjective alone.
Questions to ask about the shell
- What fiber is the cover made from?
- Is the fabric printed, woven, textured, or embellished?
- Could trim, embroidery, fringe, or a delicate finish change the cleaning method?
- Does the closure open fully enough to remove the insert without forcing the seams?
Check whether the cover is removable
A removable cover is generally the most flexible arrangement for a decorative pillow because you can clean or replace the outer layer while retaining the insert. Confirm that “removable” means the cover opens and can actually be taken off; a decorative flap or mock opening is not the same thing. Also check whether the care label permits machine washing, hand washing, or only professional cleaning.

If the cover is fixed, treat the complete pillow as one care item. Do not assume that an insert’s care method applies to the finished pillow, or that a washable cover means the inner cushion can be submerged.
How to wash and maintain a throw pillow
Follow the instructions for each component rather than applying a generic pillow-washing routine. Ruggable’s guide states: “The removable decorative Pillow Cover is machine-washable, while the inner Pillow Insert has a water-resistant liner and should only be spot-cleaned.” That instruction describes Ruggable products specifically (Ruggable’s Pillow Wash & Care Guide).

- Remove the insert and close any zipper or fastener as the care label directs.
- Check the label for water temperature, cycle, detergent, bleach restrictions, and drying instructions.
- Wash the cover using only the method permitted for that fabric and decoration.
- Dry it completely before reinstalling the insert to avoid trapping moisture.
For an insert
Spot-clean an insert when the instructions require it. Fairfield World warns that laundering an insert can bunch its fiberfill or affect its loft (Fairfield World’s frequently asked questions). Even if an insert appears washable, confirm the maker’s method, because agitation, heat, and incomplete drying can change its shape.
Routine upkeep
- Fluff the cushion according to the maker’s directions to redistribute fill.
- Rotate or reverse it when the design and construction permit, reducing wear on one area.
- Address spills promptly with the method on the care label.
- Store a clean, completely dry pillow in a breathable place rather than sealing damp fabric in plastic.
What “hypoallergenic” means on a pillow listing
Do not treat “hypoallergenic” as proof of a specific health outcome. Consumer Reports states that “There are no federal standards for the term ‘hypoallergenic.’” Its Pillow Buying Guide advises checking the manufacturer’s cleaning specifications. For a sensitive household, compare the stated shell and fill materials, read the care directions, and ask the maker what the label means for that product.

A practical buying checklist
Use this sequence when comparing listings from a marketplace, department store, or home-textile seller:
- Identify the purchase type: complete pillow, cover only, or separate insert.
- Record the dimensions: note width, height, and whether the measurement refers to the cover or insert.
- Confirm the fit: use the manufacturer’s insert recommendation; choose same-size or fuller sizing only after checking the cover’s construction.
- Read the materials: record the shell fiber and fill material rather than relying on a feel adjective.
- Inspect the closure: verify that the insert can be removed and replaced without stressing the seams.

A useful search phrase for a ready-to-use product is “throw pillow with removable cover.” If you already own one component, search for a “throw pillow insert” or “removable throw pillow cover,” then verify the actual dimensions and care label before ordering.

Choose the pillow’s dimensions in relation to the furniture rather than selecting a size in isolation. A small chair can be overwhelmed by a very large cushion, while a deep sofa or bed can accommodate larger formats or several sizes. Place the pillow where it supports the intended decorative or lounging use, and leave enough seat or sleeping surface for the furniture to remain practical.
For a coordinated arrangement, keep one variable consistent—such as a repeated color, texture, or shape—while allowing another to vary. This is a styling choice, not a product specification, so prioritize the dimensions and construction that fit your furniture and storage space.

Common problems and fixes
The pillow looks flat inside the cover
Check whether the listing supplied a cover without an insert, whether the insert is undersized, or whether the fill has lost loft. Measure both pieces and compare them with the maker’s guidance before buying a replacement.
The corners are empty
An insert with the wrong proportions can leave gaps even when its total area seems close. Use an insert matching both dimensions and the cover’s shape; do not force a square cushion into a rectangular cover.
The cover will not close
The insert may be too large, too firm, or incorrectly positioned. Remove it, check the measurements, and use the recommended size rather than forcing a zipper or buttons. For a fuller look, select a cover designed for that amount of fill.
The insert became lumpy after cleaning
Follow the product’s specified cleaning method. Fairfield World’s warning about bunched fiberfill and changed loft is a reminder that washing an insert is not interchangeable with washing a removable cover.
A “washable” pillow was damaged
Recheck whether “washable” applied only to the cover. The product may require spot-cleaning for the insert, a cold cycle, air drying, or another restricted method. Keep the care instructions with the pillow so future cleaning does not rely on memory.

Buy based on the exact dimensions and components, not the product name alone. Decide whether you need a complete pillow or a cover and insert separately; choose an insert size using the maker’s guidance and your desired fullness; compare the stated shell and fill materials; and follow separate care instructions for the cover and insert.
