Bathroom Floor Tiles: Six Safe Ways to Specify a New Bathroom Floor

There is no universal six-tile ranking for a bathroom. Use six evidence-based specification routes, verify wet DCOF and shower-floor approval, and match finish and size to the wet area.

There is no universal list of six “best” bathroom floor tiles. The right choice depends on where the tile will be installed, whether the surface is expected to be wet, the tile’s tested wet coefficient of friction (DCOF), its finish and size, and the manufacturer’s application rating.

For a level interior area that will be walked on when wet, Marazzi reports that ANSI A137.1 requires a wet DCOF of at least 0.42 for tile recommended for that use. That measurement compares slip resistance under a test method; it does not make any tile slip-proof. Use the six specification routes below to narrow your project to products that are actually suitable.

Why “six best tiles” is the wrong starting point

Tile material or appearance alone cannot establish whether a product belongs on a wet bathroom floor. Two products in the same broad porcelain category can have different permitted applications. Marazzi identifies Sabbia Marmo as porcelain floor tile but marks it unsuitable for shower floors, while the Modern Oasis Soft Cloud product page lists shower-floor suitability. Those statements apply to the named products and their published specifications, not automatically to every tile with a similar look.

No floor tile is completely slip-proof. Marazzi advises considering the intended use, likely contaminants, maintenance, wear and the manufacturer’s recommendations when selecting tile. A product that works well on a dry vanity-area floor may be a poor choice inside a shower.

Six evidence-based ways to specify your floor

These are six practical specification paths, not a ranked list of six materials. A tile qualifies only after its exact product page confirms the relevant use.

Specification route Where it fits What to verify before buying
1. Level wet-area tile meeting the DCOF threshold Interior bathroom floors that may be walked on while wet, but are not sloped shower floors. Wet DCOF of at least 0.42 where the ANSI A137.1 guidance applies; confirm the test information belongs to the exact product.
2. Small-format tile for a sloped shower floor Shower floors requiring a slope toward a drain. Manufacturer approval for shower-floor use, plus a size that allows the installer to form the required slope without creating problematic lippage or standing-water areas.
3. Non-polished finish for areas exposed to water Any bathroom floor where splashes, water, oil or grease could reach the surface. Finish designation for the exact SKU. Marazzi does not recommend polished or semi-polished surfaces in areas that may be exposed to water, oil or grease.
4. A product explicitly rated for shower floors Shower interiors and other continuously wet floor zones. Look for an explicit shower-floor statement, not merely “porcelain,” “floor tile” or a suitable-looking photograph. Modern Oasis Soft Cloud is an example of a page that lists shower-floor suitability.
5. Porcelain approved for bathroom floors but not showers Level areas outside the shower, such as the main floor or a water-closet room. Read exclusions as carefully as approvals. Sabbia Marmo is identified as porcelain floor tile but is marked unsuitable for shower floors.
6. A project-specific tile selected from complete application data Remodels with unusual drainage, frequent contaminants, heavy wear or requirements not covered by a generic category. Collect the product’s wet-area use, DCOF information where provided, finish, available sizes and care instructions, then have the installer confirm the choice for the actual substrate and slope.

Understand the wet DCOF number

Dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) is a comparative measurement obtained under defined test conditions. For level interior spaces intended to be walked upon when wet, Marazzi says ANSI A137.1 requires a wet DCOF of at least 0.42 for tile recommended for that application. Treat 0.42 as an application threshold, not a guarantee that a person cannot slip.

Real floors are affected by water, soap, oil, grease, dirt, footwear, cleaning practices and wear. A tile that meets a test value can still become hazardous if contaminants accumulate or if the product is installed in an application its manufacturer excludes. Ask for the exact product’s published test information rather than assuming a whole collection shares one rating.

Tile size changes how a wet floor drains

Size matters most where the floor must slope to a drain. Marazzi notes that smaller tiles create more grout joints and make sloping easier. Larger formats can create different drainage and standing-water considerations because fewer joints must accommodate changes in plane.

This does not make small tiles automatically safer or large tiles automatically unsuitable. The installer must be able to form a continuous slope and keep the finished surface stable. Confirm the planned dimensions, drain layout and substrate tolerances before ordering. If a large format is being considered for a shower, obtain the manufacturer’s shower-floor approval and the installer’s plan for the slope.

Choose the finish by exposure, not by appearance

Glossy surfaces can look attractive in a showroom but are not a default choice for a wet floor. Marazzi specifically says polished and semi-polished surfaces are not recommended where tile may be exposed to water, oil or grease. A non-polished or matte designation may be a better direction to investigate, but the finish name alone is not a safety certification.

Product examples show why the exact page matters

Product page Published information relevant to a bathroom floor Practical implication
Marazzi Sabbia Marmo Listed as porcelain floor tile; marked unsuitable for shower floors. It may be considered for an appropriate level floor only after checking the current application details, but it should not be specified inside a shower based on its porcelain classification.
Marazzi Modern Oasis Soft Cloud The product page lists shower-floor suitability. The explicit application statement provides evidence for shower use; still verify the selected size, finish and installation requirements.

These examples are not a durability, price or maintenance ranking. They demonstrate that the words “porcelain floor tile” do not answer the separate question, “Is this exact product approved for a shower floor?”

Step-by-step selection process

  1. Map the wet zones. Draw the bathroom floor and mark the level floor, tub surround, curbless area and shower floor. A product suitable for one zone may be excluded from another.
  2. Decide whether the surface will be sloped. A shower floor needs drainage toward the drain; a level room floor has different geometry and may be evaluated under the level-interior wet-use guidance.
  3. Set the performance check. For a level interior floor expected to be walked on when wet, look for wet DCOF information consistent with the 0.42 ANSI A137.1 threshold reported by Marazzi.
  4. Read the application statement. Confirm that the exact product and size are approved for a bathroom floor, and separately confirm shower-floor approval if applicable.
  5. Check the finish. Exclude polished and semi-polished options where water, oil or grease may reach the surface unless the manufacturer provides specific guidance that addresses the installation.
  6. Check size against the drainage plan. Discuss small versus large formats with the installer. Smaller pieces provide more grout joints and can make a slope easier; larger pieces may require a different approach to drainage and standing water.
  7. Review the care and exposure conditions. Consider soap, hair products, dirt, oil, grease, cleaning routines, expected wear and how quickly the floor can be dried. Ask the manufacturer for care instructions for the exact finish.
  8. Save the documentation. Keep the product page, technical sheet, finish, size and application rating with the project records. This prevents a visually similar but differently rated substitute from being ordered.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

Assuming all porcelain is shower-safe

Porcelain describes the tile category, not every permitted installation. The Sabbia Marmo listing illustrates the problem by excluding shower floors. Fix it by locating an explicit shower-floor statement for the exact product.

Treating DCOF as a no-slip guarantee

The 0.42 figure is a comparative test threshold for a defined level-interior application. It does not account for every contaminant, shoe, cleaning condition or wear pattern. Fix it by combining the rating with the product’s use restrictions and a realistic maintenance plan.

Choosing a polished surface because it is easy to clean

Marazzi does not recommend polished or semi-polished tile in areas that may be exposed to water, oil or grease. Fix it by prioritizing a finish intended for the exposure and verifying the care instructions instead of judging safety from appearance.

Ordering a large format before confirming the slope

Large tiles can present different drainage and standing-water considerations. Fix it by laying out the drain and slope first, then selecting a size the installer can form to that geometry.

Relying on a collection name or showroom sample

A collection can contain several sizes and finishes with different application data. Fix it by matching the technical information to the exact SKU, finish and dimensions shown on the order.

What to ask the tile supplier or manufacturer

  • Is this exact product and size approved for a bathroom floor?
  • Is it explicitly approved for a shower floor or other continuously wet area?
  • What is the wet DCOF, and which application and test conditions does it represent?
  • Is the finish polished, semi-polished, matte or another designation?
  • Are there size-specific restrictions or installation notes for sloped floors?
  • What contaminants and cleaning methods should the care instructions address?
  • If the specified tile is unavailable, which replacement has matching application, finish and performance information?

How to interpret vendor slip-resistance claims

Marazzi describes its StepWise technology as 50% more slip-resistant than ordinary tile, with the comparison qualified against tile meeting ANSI standards. That is a vendor claim about its own technology, not an independent ranking of bathroom tiles. Use independently applicable standards and the exact product’s application data as the decision basis.
