For sconces beside a bathroom mirror, start with the midpoint of each sconce back plate 60–65 inches above the finished floor. Keep the pair symmetrical and leave at least 28 inches between the fixtures. Treat those dimensions as a layout starting point, not an electrical-code rule: the mirror, vanity, fixture body, wall clearance and users’ eye levels still determine the final position.

The reference point changes with that arrangement, so do not transfer a side-sconce center height to an above-mirror fixture. This guide explains how to choose the layout, measure it, check safety and evaluate a fixture for a new-home bathroom without relying on an unverified personal installation story.

How high should bathroom sconces be?
Mark the wall so the midpoint of each side sconce’s back plate sits 60–65 inches from the finished floor. Kohler’s 2021 Lighting Quick Tips Guide and Visual Comfort’s Dex bath-sconce guidance use this same center-height range. It usually places the light slightly above eye level while keeping illumination close to both sides of the face.
Measure to the back plate’s midpoint, not to the top or bottom of the decorative shade. A tall fixture can therefore extend well above and below the mark. Before drilling, draw the actual fixture outline on the wall or use a cardboard template; the body may collide with the mirror, medicine cabinet, faucet or a nearby door even when its centerline is correct.
Set the pair at equal distances from the mirror centerline. Kohler’s layout example calls for at least 28 inches between mirror-side sconces. That spacing is a useful minimum for a typical single vanity, but the mirror width and the fixture’s published dimensions control the practical result. Never force a narrow wall to meet a spacing number if doing so would push a fixture beyond the vanity or into a cabinet.

Should sconces go beside or above the bathroom mirror?
Beside the mirror: the preferred task-lighting layout when space permits
One sconce on each side sends light across the face from two directions, reducing the deep shadows that a single overhead source can create under the eyes, nose and chin. Philips’ technical guide describes mirror lighting from the top and both sides and recommends a wall sconce on each side when the wall allows it.
Side placement works best when the mirror is centered over the vanity and both walls provide comparable clearance. Account for trim, a medicine cabinet door, towel hardware and the fixture’s projection. A sconce that opens into the mirror’s edge or a cabinet door can be uncomfortable to use even if the electrical box is correctly located.
Above the mirror: the practical alternative when side clearance is missing
A bar or linear sconce above the mirror keeps the installation on one wall and is often the only workable choice in a compact powder room. The Home Depot guide places an above-mirror bar at about 75 inches above the floor. Kohler’s examples use a different reference point: the base of an above-mirror fixture is 75–80 inches above the floor. Those measurements describe different fixture positions and reference points; choose one only after reading the exact installation diagram for the product.

Above-mirror light can be attractive and useful, but a single source high on the wall may produce more facial shadow than balanced side lighting. If the bathroom has room, combine the bar with adequate ambient light and, where appropriate, other task lighting rather than expecting one fixture to do every job.
When a bar is not the only option
Some vertical fixtures can be mounted above the mirror if the manufacturer permits that orientation. Do not rotate a sconce simply because its shape appears to fit. The mounting instructions, bulb position, shade retention and location rating determine whether a fixture may be installed vertically, horizontally or in either direction.
How to lay out sconces for one or two mirrors
One mirror and one vanity
- Measure the finished floor to the top and bottom of the mirror, then note the mirror’s centerline.
- Measure the vanity width and the clear wall span on both sides of the mirror.
- Place the electrical-box centerlines symmetrically around the mirror, using the fixture’s width and projection to verify that shades, arms and back plates clear the glass and nearby cabinets.
- Mark the back-plate midpoint at the side-lighting height described above, then confirm that the finished fixture will not overlap the mirror’s usable viewing area.
The wall-box locations are not automatically the same as the visible fixture edges. Use the product drawing to locate the box, mounting strap and any required blocking.
A small vanity, 30 inches or less
Kohler’s small-vanity example uses a two-light sconce centered above the mirror. Its guide places the base of that above-mirror fixture 75–80 inches above the floor. Check the mirror’s top edge first; a fixture mounted at that height must still clear the ceiling, crown molding and the manufacturer’s minimum distance from combustible materials.
A large vanity
For a large vanity with an above-mirror fixture, Kohler recommends a fixture about 75% of the mirror width and says it should not extend beyond the mirror. Compare the light’s actual overall length, not just the illuminated portion, with the mirror frame and the available wall.
Two mirrors on one vanity
Kohler illustrates three side sconces: one centered in the gap between the mirrors and two outer sconces placed symmetrically beyond them. The three fixtures stay within the vanity width. The Home Depot guide describes equivalent approaches, such as a matching bar above each vanity or side sconces with an additional center light where needed.

Before selecting three fixtures, verify that the central sconce will not be hidden by a thick mirror frame or obstruct either medicine-cabinet door. If the mirrors are close together, two bars or a carefully sized continuous fixture may be cleaner than forcing a center light into a narrow gap.
Measure before you buy or rough-in the electrical boxes
A reliable layout starts with the room, not a fixture photograph. Record these dimensions on a sketch:
- Finished floor to ceiling, including any crown molding.
- Vanity width, depth and countertop height.
- Mirror width, height, frame thickness and distance above the counter.
- Clear wall width on every side of the mirror.
- Door swings, medicine-cabinet doors, windows, towel bars and other projections.
- Fixture height, width, depth or projection, back-plate shape and mounting orientation.
Use painter’s tape to outline the mirror and the full fixture body at scale. Stand at the sink and look from normal viewing positions, not only straight on. A shade that seems clear from the center can still enter your peripheral vision when you lean toward the counter.

The exact box type, support and wiring method depend on the fixture and local electrical requirements.
Fixture checks that matter as much as height
Location rating
Match the fixture’s rating to its actual location. Visual Comfort lists its Dex bath sconce as damp rated. Philips’ guide says a luminaire installed in a shower or over a tub should be listed for a wet location. A damp rating for one product does not authorize another product over a tub, and neither rating should be generalized without reading the exact SKU documentation.
Projection and shadow control
A fixture that projects too far can cast a hard shadow onto the mirror or interfere with movement around the vanity. Kohler advises choosing an above-mirror fixture that does not project excessively. Compare the published depth with the counter depth, faucet reach and the space needed to clean the mirror.

Bulbs, LEDs and serviceability
Check whether the product uses replaceable bulbs or an integrated LED, how many light sources it has, the socket type, the maximum wattage and whether the shade can be removed for cleaning. These details affect future maintenance and the amount of light reaching the face. They must be verified for the exact model rather than inferred from a product family.

Color temperature
Robern’s 2016 Main Line specification sheet recommends a 2700K–3200K bulb for task lighting. That is the manufacturer’s guidance for that product, not a universal bathroom standard. Choose a temperature that works with the room’s other lamps and the colors of tile, paint and cabinetry, then keep the sources consistent so the face and mirror do not appear under mismatched tones.
Finish and visual scale
Compare the fixture’s finish with the faucet, cabinet hardware and other metalwork, but do not let finish outrank function. A very narrow sconce may look lost beside a wide mirror; a broad shade can overwhelm a shallow wall. Use the fixture’s actual height and width in the taped template before committing to the style.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan ambient, task and accent light together
The Home Depot guide separates bathroom lighting into ambient, task and accent layers and warns that overhead-only light can create facial shadows. Side sconces or an above-mirror bar provide task light at the mirror; ceiling fixtures, recessed lights or other approved sources provide ambient illumination; accent fixtures are optional and should not be counted as the room’s necessary light.
Put the mirror light on a control that suits the room. Dimming can make a bright morning task setting more comfortable at night, but the dimmer must be compatible with the lamp or integrated LED driver. If the bathroom is shared, check that the chosen control does not leave an incompatible LED visibly flickering at low levels.
Light-colored walls and a matte ceiling help distribute light, while a glossy mirror frame or polished tile can create reflections. Look at the installation with the room’s normal lamps switched on; a placement that appears balanced in an empty, unlit room may look uneven once all surfaces reflect light.

A verified fixture example for evaluating a new-home choice
The Visual Comfort Dex 30-inch Bath Sconce, item 4654303, is documented at 29.875 inches high and 4.75 inches wide, with a damp rating. Those are product-page specifications, not evidence that it was bought, installed or tested in a particular home. Its tall, narrow proportions illustrate why the back-plate midpoint is the relevant height reference: the fixture can extend a substantial distance above and below the mounting mark.
Use the same evaluation method for any fixture considered for a new home: compare actual height, width and projection; confirm the location rating; verify permitted orientation; identify the bulb or integrated-LED specification; check compatibility with the mirror and vanity; and judge the finish at full scale. Price and availability change, so confirm them from the current product documentation before ordering.
A new-home installation record that prevents expensive mistakes
Keep one page for each bathroom. Record the room name, mirror and vanity dimensions, fixture model and finish, mounting orientation, electrical-box centerline, finished-floor reference, location rating, lamp or LED details, color temperature and the date the measurements were taken. Photograph the taped layout before drilling and the open wall before it is closed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis record helps when a mirror is replaced, a bulb fails or a second fixture must be matched years later. It also separates measured facts from impressions: note what the dimensions are, then separately record whether the light feels comfortable, whether shadows remain and whether the fixture is easy to clean.
Troubleshooting common placement problems
The sconces look too high or too low
Check what point was measured. If the installer used the fixture’s top edge, bottom edge or junction box instead of the back-plate midpoint, the visible light may be several inches off the intended line. Re-measure from the finished floor and compare the result with the manufacturer’s drawing before moving electrical work.
The mirror has a bright stripe but the face is shadowed
The source may be too far above the face, too directional or blocked by a deep shade. Add or reposition side lighting where the wall allows, select a diffuser designed for even output, or improve ambient illumination. Do not solve a shadow problem by moving a fixture into a wet area or outside its approved orientation.
There is not enough room beside the mirror
Use an above-mirror bar or another fixture specifically approved for that position. Recheck the base-to-floor or bar placement instruction for the chosen model; the side-sconce centerline is not a substitute. A narrower mirror, recessed medicine cabinet or a smaller fixture can also create the clearance needed for balanced side lighting.
The fixture conflicts with a cabinet or door
Trace the full swing and projection of the door, cabinet and sconce. If the conflict is only with decorative trim, a different back plate may help; if the electrical box or fixture body occupies the swing path, relocate the box or choose another layout before finishing the wall.
Final decision checklist
- Have you chosen side, above-mirror or a two-mirror arrangement based on the available wall?
- Did you measure from the finished floor to the correct point on the fixture?
- Are paired fixtures symmetrical and clear of the mirror, cabinet doors and vanity edges?
- Does the exact SKU have the required damp or wet-location listing for its position?
- Do the mounting instructions, junction box and local electrical rules agree?
- Have you checked projection, orientation, bulb or LED details, color temperature and serviceability?
- Will the complete lighting plan provide ambient illumination as well as mirror task light?
The Bottom Line
Begin with a 60–65-inch back-plate midpoint for sconces beside the mirror, keep the pair symmetrical with at least 28 inches between them, and switch to an above-mirror layout when side clearance is unavailable. Finalize the position only after the exact fixture dimensions, rating, mounting instructions and the room’s mirror and vanity measurements are on the wall together.
