Bathroom-to-Storage Room Progress: Demolition, New Drywall and a Hidden Window

The bathroom-to-storage conversion was still in demolition: tile and concrete board were removed, damaged drywall was slated for replacement, and a previously covered window was uncovered.

The room is still in demolition, not yet a finished storage space. In her August 13, 2026 project update, Kristi Linauer reports removing the tile and concrete backer board around the bathtub, deciding to replace all of the damaged drywall, and uncovering a window that had been hidden during an earlier bathroom remodel. She expected roughly two more days of demolition before rebuilding, but that was an estimate rather than a confirmed completion date.

Linauer is doing the physical work alone, so the post is best read as a progress snapshot. It documents what she found and what she planned next; it does not establish that the room was subsequently rebuilt, that the framing met current code, or that the conversion has been completed.

Where the bathroom-to-storage conversion stands

Linauer’s update places the project firmly between demolition and reconstruction. The visible work was the removal of finishes from the bathtub area: tile and the concrete board beneath it had come down from the walls. She still had demolition to finish, including a difficult tiled section of ceiling, before installing new wall surfaces.

Her estimate was about two additional days of demolition. That timeframe belongs to the August 13, 2026 account and should not be treated as a report that the work actually ended two days later. No later completion date, finished storage layout, or final-room photographs are established in the update.

“I’m working by myself, just me and my hammer, so it’s pretty slow going.”

That sentence explains why the update focuses on incremental tear-out rather than a dramatic before-and-after. The project is a one-person demolition job, and the pace is presented as a practical consequence of that arrangement, not as a performance claim about a particular tool.

The original account is Kristi Linauer’s August 13, 2026 progress post. Its evidence is personal observation from an active renovation, not an independent inspection.

What she removed first

Tile and concrete board around the tub

The first clearly reported stage was stripping the bathtub surround. Linauer had removed the tile and the concrete board from the walls around the tub. Those materials were part of the bathroom’s finish assembly, so taking them out exposed the wall area that would eventually need a new surface.

The post does not give a measured square footage, disposal volume, tool specification, or labor-hour total. It also does not say that every bathroom finish had been removed. The ceiling still contained a tiled area that she described as especially difficult, which means the demolition phase was incomplete when she wrote the update.

Why the ceiling mattered

Linauer specifically called out the tiled ceiling as the remaining hard section. That detail distinguishes the current update from a simple statement that “the bathroom was demolished.” Some wall finishes were already down, but overhead tile still represented work to be done. The account supplies no later confirmation that this ceiling was removed, so its status should remain open.

Why she chose all-new drywall

The decision was driven by adhesive damage

After removing fixtures and finishes, Linauer found extensive damage from adhesive used for trim and a mirror. Her choice was between repairing the existing drywall with patching and sanding or removing it and hanging new drywall throughout the affected area.

She concluded that patching and sanding would probably consume about as much time and cost about as much as replacement. That is her project judgment, based on the condition she saw in this room. It is not a published cost study, a contractor estimate, or a rule that full replacement is always cheaper.

What the decision changes in the project sequence

Choosing replacement means the work is not limited to cosmetic touch-ups. The damaged drywall has to come out, the wall cavities and framing become visible, and new boards can be installed only after the demolition and any necessary framing work are addressed. Linauer’s account links the drywall decision directly to the adhesive damage; it does not provide a material list, board thickness, quantity, purchase price, or installation date.

This also explains why the project update includes a discovery behind the wall. Removing the drywall created an opportunity to see parts of the room that had been concealed during the prior bathroom configuration.

The hidden window behind the wall

What was revealed

When Linauer removed the drywall from the original back wall, she found a window opening. She had not been treating that window as part of the visible bathroom because it had been covered during an earlier bathroom remodel.

Why it had been covered before

According to Linauer, the window looked into a sunroom that existed at the time of the earlier remodel, and she did not want that view from the bathroom. Covering it solved that privacy and sightline problem in the former room. During the conversion to storage, the concealed opening became visible again.

The rediscovery is the “déjà vu” element of the update: a previous renovation decision resurfaced during the next renovation. The post does not say whether the window will be reopened, permanently closed, replaced, or incorporated into the storage-room plan. Any of those outcomes would be speculation beyond the documented progress.

What she observed about the framing

Her description of the opening

Linauer wrote that the opening appeared to lack a header and jack studs. She planned to add jack studs before installing the new drywall. Those statements should remain attributed to her visual inspection and intended next step.

The post is not a structural engineering report, a building-department review, or a code determination. It does not establish when the opening was built, what loads the wall carries, whether another structural element exists elsewhere, or whether the observed framing would pass current requirements. The only supported conclusion is that the newly exposed opening prompted Linauer to plan additional framing before closing the wall again.

Why the distinction matters

Demolition photographs can reveal conditions that were invisible behind finished surfaces, but seeing an opening is not the same as completing a structural assessment. Linauer’s wording records what she saw and what she intended to do. It does not verify the adequacy of the existing framing or document the final framing installation.

How this demolition compares with the earlier bathroom tear-out

The previous remodel was more deeply built up

Linauer contrasts this work with an earlier bathroom demolition. In that earlier tear-out, tile covered the tub surround, floor, and walls, and the tile was set in a thick mortar bed over wire. That assembly made the earlier demolition substantially more demanding in her experience.

The current work is easier, but not easy

The present conversion has been easier than that earlier bathroom tear-out, according to Linauer, because it does not involve the same extensive mortar-bed construction. “Easier” does not mean finished: tile and concrete board still had to be removed, and the tiled ceiling remained a difficult task. Her comparison is a personal assessment of two projects in the same house, not a measured productivity comparison.

The account identifies the house as dating to 1948 and describes the framing as late-1940s or early-1950s construction. Those dates provide context for why concealed assemblies and past remodeling decisions may not match the assumptions of a newly built room, but the post does not inventory every original component or establish the age of each wall section.

Documented sequence versus unknown outcome

Project point What the August 13, 2026 update establishes What it does not establish
Bathtub-area walls Tile and concrete board had been removed. That all bathroom wall finishes were gone or that the walls were ready for drywall.
Ceiling A tiled ceiling section remained difficult and unfinished. That the ceiling was later demolished.
Drywall Linauer decided to remove damaged drywall and install new drywall. Material quantities, prices, installation date, or completed walls.
Window A previously covered window opening was exposed on the original back wall. Whether the window was reopened, closed, replaced, or retained.
Framing Linauer said the opening lacked a header and jack studs and planned to add jack studs. A code-compliant structural evaluation or proof that the planned work was completed.
Schedule She estimated about two more days of demolition. Confirmation that the estimate was met.
Final conversion The room was being prepared for conversion to storage. A finished storage room, shelving plan, paint color, or move-in date.

What the update tells a reader following the project

The project had reached the “open everything up” stage

By removing the surround and damaged drywall, Linauer was exposing the conditions that would govern reconstruction. The hidden window is a concrete example of why demolition can change a renovation plan: the wall no longer contained only the expected bathroom assembly.

The next documented priorities were practical, not decorative

Her stated priorities were finishing demolition, dealing with the tiled ceiling, addressing the newly visible opening, and replacing the damaged drywall. The post does not move on to paint, shelving, lighting, flooring, or storage organization. Those are outside the reported stage of the project.

The schedule remained provisional

“About two more days” is an estimate made while work was still underway. Hidden conditions, the ceiling tile, and the framing question could all affect the actual duration, but the source does not report what happened afterward. Treating the estimate as a completed timeline would turn a forecast into an unsupported fact.

What is—and is not—known about the finished room

  • Known: the intended use changed from bathroom to storage.
  • Known: demolition had removed tile and concrete board around the bathtub.
  • Known: adhesive damage led Linauer to choose full drywall replacement in place of patching and sanding.
  • Known: a window covered during an earlier bathroom remodel was uncovered.
  • Known: Linauer planned framing work at that opening before new drywall.
  • Not established: the final treatment of the window.
  • Not established: whether demolition ended within the estimated two days.
  • Not established: whether new drywall, paint, shelving, or other storage features were installed.

That boundary is important because the post is a progress update, not a completion reveal. Its value is in recording the discoveries and decisions that shaped the work at that moment.

Why this update is useful despite being unfinished

A conversion project can change direction when earlier work is exposed. Here, a hidden window altered the information available on the back wall, while adhesive damage changed the preferred drywall strategy. The update shows those decisions occurring before reconstruction rather than presenting a simplified finished result.

It also documents the difference between two demolition conditions in the same older house: the earlier bathroom had tile over a thick mortar bed and wire, while the current removal involved tile and concrete board but still included a stubborn tiled ceiling. That comparison explains why Linauer described the current job as easier without suggesting it was effortless.

For readers interested in the project, the clearest status is therefore straightforward: demolition was progressing, rebuilding had not yet begun, and the newly exposed window and framing were the main unresolved discoveries described in the post.
