A convincing bathroom transformation starts by naming what is wrong with the old room. Is it dark because daylight is blocked, cramped because the shower enclosure is bulky, uncomfortable because the entry is awkward, or simply dated because the finishes no longer suit the space? The strongest before-and-after projects connect every visible change to one of those problems.
The examples below show how that logic works in real rooms: a Swiss bathroom rebuilt with stone-look tile and wood furniture, a six-square-metre Norwegian bathroom lightened with white marble-look tile, and a tight shower replaced by a floor-level design with a slim channel and glass partition. They are case-specific results, not guarantees that the same choices will produce the same effect in every home.

Start with the “before”: identify the room’s actual constraints
Take wide photographs from the doorway and from the shower or bath. Note what the camera reveals that daily use can hide: dark corners, a visually heavy enclosure, mismatched surfaces, insufficient storage, a difficult step into the shower, or furniture that consumes too much floor area. Measure the room, door swing, windows, existing plumbing points and ceiling height before choosing finishes.
This diagnosis prevents a common mistake: selecting a beautiful tile or tap before deciding which problem the renovation must solve. A pale surface may brighten a room, but it cannot compensate for a blocked window. A new basin may look modern, but it will not create usable floor space if the shower door still swings across the room. Treat the “before” photograph as a list of constraints, not merely an unattractive image to erase.

What changed in the documented transformations?
A Swiss room: from stripped-out shell to coordinated warmth
One Swiss example began by stripping the walls and removing old appliances. The finished room coordinated stone-look tiles with wooden bathroom furniture, creating a brighter, updated composition. The important lesson is the sequence: demolition exposed the true condition of the room, then the tile and furniture were selected as a related visual system rather than as isolated purchases.
For your own project, decide whether the existing floor plan can support that kind of finish change. If the basin, toilet and shower already work in their positions, retaining the plumbing can preserve time and budget for surfaces, lighting and storage. If the old locations are the reason the room feels cramped, a cosmetic makeover will not deliver the same before-and-after change.
A six-square-metre Norwegian bathroom: using a lighter visual language
In a Norwegian bathroom measuring six square metres, dated blue finishes were replaced with white marble-look wall and floor tiles. The case account says the large tiles made that particular small room seem larger and brighter. Fewer visible grout lines can produce a calmer image, but the result depends on the tile’s colour, pattern, lighting, grout and installation quality. Treat the Norwegian outcome as a design possibility, not a universal rule that every small bathroom needs large white tile.
A tight shower: removing a barrier and visual obstruction
Another case replaced a tight shower cubicle with a floor-level shower. The source highlights easier step-in access, a slim shower channel and a glass partition that allows light through and makes the shower feel less bulky. That is a functional as well as visual transformation: the “after” image is better because the shower is easier to enter and occupies less visual weight.

How do you redesign an old bathroom? Match the scope to the problem
Renovation scope determines how much of the room changes, which trades are needed and how long the disruption may last. The categories below use Geberit’s indicative US work periods and UK budget bands. The schedules are manufacturer estimates, not promises for a particular contractor. The prices are UK-specific guidance, with the year not stated on the source page; they are not US estimates, current quotes or guaranteed market averages.

| Cosmetic renovation | Existing layout, plumbing and often tile | Paint, lighting, a basin tap, hand shower, selected furniture or ceramic fixtures | 1–3 days | £5,000–£10,000 |
| Renovation with new tiling | Floor plan and structural arrangement | Wall and/or floor tile, finishes and selected fixtures | About 3–5 days | £15,000–£30,000 |
| Structural renovation | Only elements confirmed serviceable after opening up | Walls, pipes, fixture positions and potentially electrical or HVAC work | 1–2 weeks | £20,000–£50,000 |
Geberit says actual cost varies with the project’s scope, room area, products, region and provider. A short schedule can also expand when hidden moisture, damaged subfloor, supply delays or inspection requirements appear. Ask each contractor to state what is included in demolition, disposal, waterproofing, tiling, electrical work, ventilation, fixtures and final cleaning.
How can you renovate a small bathroom without making it feel smaller?
Keep the floor plan when it is doing its job
Moving a toilet, basin or shower can unlock a better layout, but it also introduces pipework, access and coordination work. If the existing arrangement gives you a clear route through the room, use the renovation to reduce visual bulk instead: a lighter surface scheme, less obstructive shower enclosure, carefully sized furniture and better lighting.

Plan for light, not just pale colour
List every source of illumination: daylight, ceiling light, mirror light and task lighting at the basin. An illuminated round mirror above a washbasin appears in the case material and is a useful way to combine reflection with focused light. Position mirrors so they reflect useful light rather than a blank wall or a cluttered shelf. Painting a ceiling and walls in a lighter, coordinated colour can support the effect, but no colour can create daylight where the room has none.
Reduce the visual weight of the shower
A floor-level shower, slim channel and transparent glass partition were used in the tight-shower case to improve entry and let light pass through. In a small room, compare the open door swing, frame thickness and sightlines of each enclosure before ordering. Confirm that the selected screen still contains water and allows safe access for cleaning and maintenance.

Choose tile scale deliberately
The Norwegian case used large white marble-look tiles in a six-square-metre room and described the result as larger and brighter. Large formats can require flatter walls, precise setting and more careful handling, so include substrate preparation and installation skill in the decision. If the walls are irregular or access is difficult, a smaller format may be more practical even when the visual goal is a calm, bright room.
Give storage a measured footprint
Wooden bathroom furniture helped define the updated Swiss room. Measure the clearance in front of drawers, the door swing and the space needed to clean around the unit. Wall-mounted or narrower furniture can preserve floor visibility, but it must be fixed to a suitable structure and coordinated with plumbing connections.

A painting-led refresh: when the structure can stay
If the layout, waterproofing and major fixtures are sound, a lighter refresh can deliver a meaningful before-and-after without opening every wall. Hansgrohe describes options such as repainting, improving the lighting, installing a modern hand shower or replacing a basin tap while retaining the existing structure. Geberit also notes that selected bathroom furniture or ceramic fixtures can be replaced without major structural measures.
- Document the existing condition. Photograph tile, grout, sealant, paint, fittings and any signs of movement or moisture. A cosmetic plan should stop if the substrate or waterproofing is failing.
- Choose the visual target. Decide whether the room should feel brighter, warmer, quieter or less cluttered. Limit the number of finishes so the result reads as one composition.
- Prepare before painting. Remove or protect fittings, repair the substrate, clean thoroughly and allow surfaces to dry. Use a coating suitable for the bathroom conditions and follow its preparation and curing directions.
- Coordinate light and reflection. Upgrade the light source or add a bathroom vanity mirror where appropriate, then check how the new paint colour appears under both daylight and artificial light.
- Replace only the fixtures that solve a problem. A basin tap, hand shower, mirror or furniture unit earns its place when it improves use, light, storage or visual coherence. Do not remove serviceable items solely to create a longer shopping list.
- Photograph from the same positions. Recreate the original viewpoints after the work. Matching angles makes changes in brightness, obstruction and storage easy to judge.
When a finish change is not enough
Open walls and reconsider the layout when the shower cannot be entered safely, pipes are failing, ventilation is inadequate, the floor cannot support the intended drainage, or the room’s circulation is fundamentally wrong. Structural work may involve plumbing, electrical and HVAC trades in addition to demolition, waterproofing and finishing. Ask for a written sequence so one trade does not cover work that another must later remove.
A contractor should also explain how the work will protect adjacent rooms, how waste will leave the property and what inspections or approvals apply locally. These practical details rarely appear in an inspirational photograph, but they determine whether the “after” remains dry, safe and serviceable.
Budget and time: read the figures in context
The UK guidance bands—£5,000–£10,000 for cosmetic work, £15,000–£30,000 for new tiling and £20,000–£50,000 for structural renovation—are broad because scope is broad. A room with expensive tile, difficult access or extensive pipe replacement can sit at a different point in the band than a similarly sized room with standard products. Obtain itemised local quotations rather than converting the figures into a personal allowance.

The indicative US periods of 1–3 days, about 3–5 days and 1–2 weeks describe increasing scope, not a guaranteed calendar. Add time for design decisions, product lead times, drying and curing, inspections, corrections and unforeseen conditions. If the bathroom is the household’s only one, agree in advance how long it may be unavailable and what happens if the schedule changes.
Should you hire a professional?
For context, a 2017 Houzz report covering US homeowners with a completed, current or planned master-bathroom renovation in 2016–17 found that 82% changed the style of the room and 86% hired a professional. Those are historical survey results from a defined renovation cohort, not current rates for every household. They do illustrate why a project can involve more than decorating: waterproofing, drainage, electrical work and fixture installation have consequences beyond appearance.
You may be able to handle limited preparation or painting if the surface is sound and local rules permit it. Have qualified professionals assess plumbing, electrical circuits, ventilation, structural changes and floor-level shower construction. Agree who is responsible for measuring, ordering, checking deliveries and correcting defects before work starts.
Common before-and-after mistakes, and how to avoid them
- Choosing a style before diagnosing the room. Write the problem beside every proposed change: blocked light, awkward entry, poor storage or dated finish.
- Assuming a small room needs one universal solution. The large-tile result came from one six-square-metre Norwegian case. Test samples under your own lighting and view them with the actual grout and fixtures.
- Calling a shower replacement cosmetic. A floor-level shower can involve drainage, waterproofing and floor construction. Obtain a technical assessment before approving the appearance.
- Ignoring visual bulk at eye level. Thick frames, dark furniture and crowded shelves can dominate a small room even when the floor plan is unchanged.
- Comparing quotations by total alone. Check demolition, disposal, preparation, waterproofing, labour, fixtures, taxes, protection and reinstatement line by line.
- Photographing only the finished room. Keep matching before and after views so you can evaluate whether the original problem was actually solved.
A practical checklist for judging the finished transformation
- Can you enter and move through the room without the door or shower screen creating a conflict?
- Does the lighting reach the basin, mirror, shower and storage areas without harsh glare?
- Do tile, paint, furniture, taps and glass read as a coordinated set?
- Is storage sufficient for daily items without covering the new surfaces?
- Are sealant, grout, drainage and ventilation performing as intended?
- Were the promised scope, finish quality and completion documents delivered?
The best bathroom before-and-after is not the one with the most expensive finishes. It is the one where the dark, cramped, dated or inconvenient condition has a specific response: lighter surfaces for a particular lighting problem, a slimmer or transparent enclosure for visual bulk, a floor-level shower for difficult entry, or a carefully limited refresh when the structure already works.
