Kristi Linauer’s open, table-style vanity was working as intended: the faucet ran, the sink drained, and she saw no leaks when she wrote about it on November 1, 2022. The problem was visual. An unidentified Delta faucet arrived with attached, semi-rigid supply hoses that were difficult to route, pushed the shutoff valves sideways, and made the plumbing under the sink look misaligned. Linauer considered concealing the assembly, then planned a cosmetic approach involving hose adjustment and flat-black paint on shiny chrome parts and exposed PVC. She had not yet reported whether that treatment worked.

The project worked before it looked finished
Linauer’s account is useful because it separates two renovation questions that are often treated as one: does the plumbing function, and does it look right? At the point described in her post, the answer to the first question was yes. One vanity faucet was connected, water was running, the sink was draining, and she reported no leaks. Her dissatisfaction concerned the view beneath the basin, not a confirmed failure of the water supply or waste system.

That distinction matters for anyone planning a bathroom with an open base. A conventional vanity hides most of the supply and drain connections behind doors or a cabinet panel. A table-style vanity leaves those components in the room’s visual field. A connection that would be ignored inside a cabinet can become the strongest horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line under an open sink.

Linauer describes the emotional side of that situation plainly: “Plumbing is my least favorite thing to do.” The sentence is a personal reaction, not a technical recommendation, but it explains why a functioning installation could still feel unfinished to its owner.
Why the table-style vanity made every connection noticeable
The vanity design amplified small alignment problems. Linauer says the table-style construction left the plumbing exposed, whereas a conventional vanity would have hidden it. With no cabinet wall to interrupt the view, the faucet hoses, shutoff valves, wall plates, and exposed PVC became part of the room’s composition.
In an enclosed vanity, a hose can bow toward the back or sit at an awkward angle without affecting the room’s appearance. Under an open vanity, the same route may be visible from standing height, from the side, and in reflections from nearby tile or flooring. The visual issue is therefore not simply that plumbing exists; it is that the chosen vanity makes its route and geometry legible.

It shows that they demand earlier attention to the appearance of mechanical connections. The faucet-hose problem Linauer encountered
Integrated supply lines changed the routing options
Linauer identifies the faucet as a Delta product but gives no model number. She says its supply hoses were attached to the faucet and could not be removed or replaced. That differed from the separate hoses she says she had typically used with other faucets.
The attached lines were semi-rigid. In her experience, they resisted the neat, controlled curves she wanted beneath the open basin. A separate, replaceable hose can sometimes offer a different length or flexibility, but this post does not identify a compatible replacement, establish that one exists for her faucet, or compare the design with another model. The reliable conclusion is narrower: the faucet’s integrated, semi-rigid lines limited the routing choices available to her.

For an open vanity, that feature deserves attention before purchase. The relevant questions are whether the supply lines are integrated or replaceable, how far they reach, how they bend, and whether their connection ends match the home’s shutoff arrangement. Linauer’s experience does not answer those questions for any other faucet, and it does not provide a model-specific compatibility verdict.
The hoses pushed the shutoff valves sideways
Routing difficulty had a second visual consequence. Linauer says the hoses pushed the shutoff valves sideways, which made the valves and the wall plates look misaligned to her. The result was not merely an untidy loop of tubing; the force and angle of the hoses affected the apparent orientation of the hardware that normally reads as fixed and deliberate.
That observation explains why simply “hiding” a hose is not always enough in an exposed installation. The eye follows the relationship between parts. If a hose presses a valve off-axis, the wall plate can appear crooked even when it was installed level. Under an open vanity, the viewer sees the valve, plate, hose, and faucet tail as one group.
The source does not provide dimensions, connection types, photographs with measurements, or a method for altering the valves. It therefore cannot support a step-by-step re-plumbing instruction. It does support a design check: test the hose route with the vanity in place and look at the shutoffs and escutcheons from the normal viewing angles before treating the installation as visually complete.
What the post says about water flow—and what it does not
Linauer describes a small assembly that joins the hot and cold feeds before water travels up to the faucet. She says the stream seemed less powerful than she was accustomed to. This is an anecdotal impression, not a measured flow-rate result.
No gallons-per-minute figure, pressure reading, test method, faucet model, or comparison fixture appears in the account. The comment should not be converted into a general claim that the faucet design produces weak flow. A perceived change can have several possible explanations, but this source does not determine which one applies.

If a reader experiences a similar concern, the sensible first distinction is between appearance and performance. A neat-looking hose route cannot correct a genuine flow problem, and a subjective impression of a weaker stream does not prove that a component is defective. Model-specific instructions, manufacturer specifications, and appropriate plumbing troubleshooting sources would be needed before changing connections or parts.
Linauer’s proposed cosmetic treatment
Flat black was a plan, not a documented result
Linauer considered building a box or using another concealment method. Instead, she planned to adjust the hoses and apply flat black paint to shiny chrome components and exposed PVC. The intended effect was visual cohesion: reduce the contrast between the plumbing and the dark area beneath the vanity so the assembly would attract less attention.
Her article ends with that treatment as an intention. It does not report the paint being applied, the preparation used, the products selected, the durability of the finish, or the final appearance. There is no basis for calling the approach tested, proven, or endorsed by the article.

What a painting-focused reader should verify
Painting plumbing surfaces is a materials question as much as a color question. Chrome, plastic, and PVC do not automatically share the same coating requirements. Before using any coating, a homeowner would need to check the product manufacturer’s stated surface compatibility, preparation instructions, curing time, and restrictions around moisture, heat, abrasion, and moving or threaded parts.
Those checks are especially important under a sink, where condensation, occasional splashes, cleaning, and contact during future maintenance can challenge a decorative finish. The post supplies none of those technical details. Its contribution is the design idea—visually unify exposed components—not a specification for how to coat them safely or permanently.
Painting should also remain a cosmetic decision. It should not be used to cover an active leak, conceal a connection that needs inspection, or make an inaccessible shutoff harder to operate. Linauer reported no leaks at the time she wrote, but that observation applies to her installation at that moment; it is not a guarantee for another bathroom or for the later condition of hers.

A practical decision framework for an open vanity
1. Decide how much plumbing you are willing to display
Start with the vanity itself. An open, table-style base makes the supply and drain layout part of the finished room. If that visibility is intentional, plan for the lines, valves, and wall plates to be seen. If the goal is a quiet, furniture-like silhouette, an enclosed design may remove the visual problem without requiring a coating or enclosure.
This is not a claim that one vanity type is superior. It is a fit question between the furniture and the owner’s tolerance for visible mechanical details. Linauer’s frustration arose because the open design exposed a result she would have accepted more readily behind a cabinet.
2. Inspect the faucet’s hose arrangement before committing
Look for the information Linauer did not have in the article: the exact model, whether the lines are permanently attached, their stated reach, and the connection details at the shutoff valves. Ask how the hoses will sit when the faucet is centered and the vanity is pushed to its final position. A product that is easy to route in a closed cabinet may be visually awkward when every bend is exposed.
Do not assume that a faucet named in a personal renovation story can be identified or replaced from the brand alone. Because Linauer gives no model number, her account cannot verify a specific replacement, matching hose, or compatibility solution.
3. Dry-position the visible parts
Before final cosmetic decisions, view the assembly as a composition. Check the hose curves, valve orientation, wall-plate alignment, and the line of sight from the room. This step addresses the exact issue Linauer describes without presuming that any particular valve should be moved or any connection should be altered.

Keep access in mind. A visually tidy arrangement still needs reachable shutoffs and serviceable connections. If correcting the appearance would require forcing a hose, stressing a fitting, or blocking maintenance access, the cosmetic gain would not justify the mechanical risk. The source does not describe such damage; this is a general planning boundary, not a diagnosis of her installation.

4. Separate functional checks from the finish
Linauer checked the basic result first: water ran, the sink drained, and she saw no leaks. That order is useful. Confirm function before applying a decorative treatment, because paint or a concealment panel can make later inspection more difficult. Once the system is known to be sound, appearance can be addressed as a separate design task.
What is established and what remains unknown
| Question | What Linauer’s post establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Did the faucet work? | Water was running, the sink was draining, and she reported no leaks at that point. | Long-term reliability, code compliance, or performance in another installation. |
| What faucet was used? | It was identified by brand as Delta. | The model number, current availability, specifications, or replacement compatibility. |
| How were the hoses configured? | They were attached to the faucet, semi-rigid, and difficult for her to route neatly. | A universal advantage or disadvantage compared with every faucet using separate hoses. |
| Why did the plumbing look misaligned? | The hose routing pushed shutoff valves sideways, affecting the appearance of valves and wall plates. | Exact measurements, installation tolerances, or a proven correction method. |
| Was the water flow weak? | She felt the stream was less powerful than she was accustomed to. | A measured flow rate, pressure reading, or general product finding. |
| Did black paint solve the issue? | Flat black paint and further hose adjustment were proposed. | Whether the paint was applied, adhered, lasted, or improved the final appearance. |
Why this is a useful renovation story despite its limits
The value of the account is not a universal plumbing method. It is a record of how a small product characteristic became important because of the surrounding design. Integrated, semi-rigid hoses may be unremarkable inside a cabinet; beneath a table-style vanity, they can determine the visual balance of the entire installation. A shutoff valve that is technically connected can still look wrong when a hose pushes it sideways.
The story also demonstrates why a finished room is judged in layers. Mechanical success came first. Visual refinement came next. Linauer’s proposed paint treatment belongs to that second layer, and its status should remain clear: it was an idea she planned to try, not an outcome she documented.

For a homeowner choosing an open vanity, the most transferable lesson is to treat visible plumbing as part of the design brief from the beginning. Confirm the faucet’s hose construction, imagine the route under the actual basin, and decide whether the final look will be accepted, concealed, or visually unified with a coating that the coating manufacturer says is suitable for the specific surfaces.
The bottom line for exposed bathroom vanity plumbing
Linauer’s bathroom vanity plumbing was functioning when she wrote, but the exposed arrangement failed her visual standard. The attached semi-rigid faucet hoses were hard to route and pushed the shutoff valves and wall plates out of alignment. Her proposed response—adjust the hoses and paint shiny chrome and exposed PVC flat black—was a planned cosmetic experiment, not a reported result. If your own vanity leaves plumbing visible, evaluate hose configuration and sightlines before installation, verify function before finishing, and treat any paint choice as a surface-compatibility decision rather than a guaranteed fix.
