Beach Slice is a completed 2021 holiday house in Shoreham, Victoria, Australia, by Steffen Welsch Architects. Its 188 m² plan is deliberately compact and discreet: rather than compete with the bush landscape or imitate an oversized coastal estate, the house organizes everyday holiday life around a quiet retreat, a shared deck and carefully managed sun, shade and outlooks.

The project sits about an hour from Melbourne and roughly a five-minute walk from the shore of Western Port Bay. It is not a beachfront building. Its published sustainability description names passive-solar design, solar power, rainwater collection, recycled and low-impact materials, on-site material reuse and biodiversity-minded landscaping, but no measured energy, water, carbon or biodiversity results have been published.

Where Beach Slice is and why the site matters

Shoreham is a coastal settlement in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula region. The house is close enough to Western Port Bay for walking to the shore, yet it is set within a bush landscape rather than placed directly on sand or marketed as a beachfront residence. That distinction explains much of the architectural approach: the building is asked to belong to a vegetated site first and to behave as a holiday house second.

Steffen Welsch Architects describe the project as a retreat from daily routines and from the pressure to make a coastal second home conspicuously large or luxurious. The building’s low-key presence allows vegetation, weather and informal occupation to remain the dominant experiences. The design is therefore less about creating a singular object to view and more about making a background for cooking, resting, walking and gathering.

“Architecture as Background”: the central design idea

The architects frame Beach Slice as an example of “quiet architecture.” In their project text they quote Viennese architect Hermann Czech: “Architecture shall not impose on you. The user must not notice it, it should appear to have always been like this.” The same text says the intention was “Architecture as Background,” a phrase attributed there to Czech. No primary Czech publication was identified alongside the project, so the wording should be understood as quoted in the architects’ own description.

This idea affects the house in practical ways. Visual restraint is paired with a compact footprint, a lightweight timber-clad expression and a plan that separates energetic communal activity from quieter private retreat. The result is not an absence of design; it is design that tries to make its effects feel ordinary, comfortable and inevitable.

How the plan balances private retreat and shared life

Active and passive zones

The Local Project describes two broad zones. Active areas support social use, movement and connection to the outdoors. Passive areas provide retreat, rest and separation. This zoning gives a holiday house a clear rhythm: occupants can gather without making every room communal, and someone seeking quiet can withdraw without leaving the house entirely.

The deck as the social hinge

An outdoor deck links the social side of the plan to the landscape. It extends the usable living area without turning the building into a large enclosed volume. In a holiday setting, that threshold can absorb activities that would otherwise demand additional interior rooms: shared meals, reading, wet-weather transitions and informal conversation.

Compactness without a miniature-room effect

Compact design can fail when it simply compresses a conventional plan. Beach Slice instead uses orientation, outdoor spill-out and separation of uses to make the area work harder. The published descriptions do not provide a room-by-room plan or dimensions, so it would be inaccurate to infer exact bedroom counts, ceiling heights or circulation widths from photographs alone.

Form, orientation and response to the coastal landscape

The house is described as lightweight and timber clad, responding to the local coastal vernacular while remaining visually recessive. Its form is not presented as a sculptural landmark. The relationship to the bush setting is the main visual subject, with the building acting as a measured edge between interior life and vegetation.

Orientation and roof overhangs are identified as environmental design tools. Correctly positioned openings can admit useful winter sun while limiting unwanted summer heat; overhangs provide a passive layer of shade and weather protection. These are design strategies, not proof of a particular indoor temperature or energy reduction. The published material does not state the orientation of every room, glazing specifications, shading calculations or a modeled thermal result.

Increased thermal mass is also named as part of the approach. Thermal mass can moderate temperature swings when it is paired with appropriate solar access, insulation and ventilation. The project descriptions do not identify the mass locations, materials in each assembly or a measured effect, so the claim should remain at the level of documented intent.

Materials and construction language

ArchDaily lists wood and brick among the principal materials. Timber cladding reinforces the house’s lightweight character and helps it sit comfortably among trees, while brick introduces a denser, more durable counterpoint. The combination avoids the polished, resort-like surface often associated with second homes and instead supports a quieter, more tactile palette.

ArchDaily’s project record names Britton Timbers, Kingspan Insulated Panels and The Brick Recyclers among manufacturers or material contributors. It also credits the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation. These names identify documented project participants; they do not establish that every product from those organizations appears throughout the building or that a particular product specification was used in every assembly.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

The architects’ archive additionally identifies reuse of materials on site and low-impact or recycled materials as principles. No bill of quantities, recycled-content percentage, embodied-carbon calculation or durability assessment has been published, so the material story is best read as a set of choices and priorities rather than a quantified environmental balance sheet.

What sustainable design features are documented?

Strategy named in project descriptions How it is intended to work What is not established
Passive-solar design Use orientation, glazing and shading to improve useful solar gain and reduce unwanted heat. No published energy model, orientation schedule or measured heating and cooling reduction.
Solar power Generate electricity on site from sunlight. No array size, storage specification, generation figure or operating data.
Rainwater collection Capture roof runoff for appropriate household or landscape uses. No tank capacity, end-use schedule, potable-water treatment detail or savings measurement.
Low-impact and recycled materials Reduce resource demand through material selection and recycled content. No embodied-carbon total, percentage recycled or life-cycle assessment.
Reuse of materials on site Keep suitable existing or recovered materials in use rather than discarding them. No itemized inventory or diversion figure.
Biodiversity-minded landscaping Use planting and site treatment intended to support habitat and ecological variety. No species list, habitat survey or measured biodiversity outcome.
Overhangs and thermal mass Combine shade and heat-storage capacity to moderate comfort conditions. No post-occupancy temperature or energy data.

These distinctions matter. A design can be environmentally considered without having a public performance certificate, and a strategy can be sensible without delivering a result that has been independently measured. Beach Slice is documented in the first category.

Who designed and delivered the house?

Steffen Welsch Architects is the design practice. ArchDaily lists Maurice Farrugia and Associates as structural engineer, Blue Lotus as ESD consultant and FrankBuilt as builder. The Local Project credits Floyd Energy for ESD consultancy instead. Because the publications disagree on that consultant credit, it is more accurate to attribute Blue Lotus to ArchDaily’s record and Floyd Energy to The Local Project rather than presenting one name as uncontested.

ArchDaily’s record supplies the most precise published area and team information and is dated March 8, 2022. The architect’s own archive is the strongest account of the design principles. The Local Project adds the clearest explanation of active and passive zoning, while Architizer’s listing, featured April 9, 2025, repeats the “quiet architecture” framing.

How to interpret the project’s environmental claims

For readers assessing a holiday house, the useful question is not simply whether a project uses the word sustainable. Separate three levels of evidence:

  1. Design intent: Beach Slice explicitly names passive solar, solar power, rainwater capture, recycled materials, reuse and biodiversity-oriented landscaping.
  2. Technical provision: A complete specification would identify systems, capacities, insulation values, glazing, controls and planting. Those details are not in the published project descriptions.
  3. Measured outcome: An energy rating, utility history, water balance, embodied-carbon assessment or biodiversity monitoring would show performance in operation. None is supplied for this house.

This framework prevents two opposite mistakes: dismissing thoughtful passive design because a performance number is unavailable, or treating a list of strategies as proof of a quantified result.

What Beach Slice offers as a model for other holiday homes

The project is useful less as a kit of visual details than as a sequence of decisions. A designer or owner studying it can ask:

  • Can the footprint remain compact if outdoor rooms and thresholds carry part of the program?
  • Which spaces need active social connection, and which should provide genuine retreat?
  • Can the building recede into existing vegetation instead of clearing a dominant platform?
  • Which environmental systems are appropriate to the site’s sun, rainfall, occupancy pattern and maintenance capacity?
  • Are sustainability claims supported by calculations or monitoring, and are the limits of the evidence stated clearly?

These questions are transferable, but the answers must be site-specific. A house in a different climate, with year-round occupancy or a different bush condition, would require different orientation, water management, materials and maintenance decisions.

Why the project is significant

Beach Slice presents a counterargument to the idea that a successful coastal home must be expansive, conspicuous or technically over-described. Its architecture is intentionally quiet: a compact 2021 retreat that uses zoning, a deck, timber and brick, landscape sensitivity and passive strategies to make ordinary occupation the main event.

Its strongest published achievement is conceptual and spatial. The house gives private and shared life distinct places, lets the landscape remain visible, and treats environmental measures as part of an integrated way of living rather than as decorative add-ons. At the same time, responsible reading requires acknowledging that the public record does not include measured operational or ecological results.
