The bedroom and foyer are past the first preparation stage but not yet finished: Kristi Linauer has primed every wall, applied a second coat to most of them, and is still mapping the picture-frame molding layout. Her key design change is to stop forcing identical rectangles throughout the house. Instead, she is considering how many panels each individual wall can carry, how visible that wall is, and where doors, furniture, and outlets interrupt the composition.

Where the project stands
Linauer’s post is dated September 10, 2025, and shows a September 26, 2025 update. By that point, she had put at least one coat of primer on all of the bedroom and foyer walls. She had added a second coat to most of them before running out of primer. That is meaningful progress, but it does not mean the molding has been cut, attached, caulked, painted, or completed.
The selected style is simple picture-frame molding. Linauer contrasts it with what she calls the more laborious “judges paneling,” and says she decided earlier to use the simpler treatment. The post does not identify a molding profile, material, brand, retailer, wall dimensions, price, shopping list, or installation sequence.
Why the layout plan changed
Her starting idea was to make the rectangles close to the same size. While watching television, however, she noticed a room in which the paneling followed the width of each wall instead of imposing one repeated module everywhere. Most walls had one large rectangle; longer walls were divided into two or three.

That example changed the question from “How do I make every rectangle match?” to “What arrangement makes sense on this wall?” A wall-by-wall approach can acknowledge that a narrow return, a broad uninterrupted wall, and a wall broken by a doorway do not offer the same amount of visual space. It also allows furniture and electrical outlets to influence the drawing before anything is permanently installed.
This is Linauer’s personal design preference, not a stated standard for wainscoting. The post supplies no ideal rectangle dimensions or mathematical formula. The planning value is in treating the room as a collection of different viewing conditions rather than a grid that must be identical from corner to corner.

The foyer: one rectangle on each wall
A simple count for a varied space
For the foyer, Linauer planned one rectangle per wall. That includes a narrow rectangle beside an off-center doorway. The narrow space could easily tempt a designer to force a second panel or to ignore the area altogether; her plan instead gives that wall its own single frame.
The doorway matters because it is not centered. A symmetrical pattern measured from the room as a whole could leave an awkward sliver on one side of the opening. By looking at each wall separately, she can place the frame in relation to the actual wall edges and the door rather than to an abstract centerline.
Why the foyer decision is still a plan
One frame per wall describes the intended arrangement, not a documented installation. There are no recorded measurements for the narrow section, no stated reveal around the door casing, and no indication that the molding has been cut or mounted. The progress update is valuable precisely because it captures the layout decision before those later steps.
The bedroom: fewer panels where furniture and openings compete
Behind the bed
Linauer similarly chose one rectangle in several bedroom areas, including the wall behind the bed. A bed can conceal a substantial portion of the lower wall, so a single larger frame keeps the visible pattern legible instead of creating multiple small shapes that disappear behind the headboard and bedding.
The post does not provide the bed’s dimensions or its distance from the wall. It therefore cannot establish how much of the frame will remain visible. The relevant point is that furniture is part of her composition decision, not an afterthought.

The wall beside the bathroom door
In the displayed update, she says she preferred two rectangles to the right of the bathroom door. That choice reflects a longer or more visible stretch than the single-frame areas, while still keeping the pattern relatively restrained.

The bathroom door divides the bedroom visually. Two frames on the remaining side can acknowledge that available run without pretending the door is irrelevant. The post does not state the exact span or the distance between the door and the proposed frames.
An undecided wall: two or three
Another bedroom wall was still unresolved between two and three rectangles. Linauer initially leaned toward two because she did not want the room to look busy with many small rectangles. She was also considering where electrical outlets would land in relation to the molding.
That uncertainty is not a failure to plan. It identifies the two variables most likely to change the drawing at full scale: how dense the pattern feels from normal viewpoints and whether an outlet would collide with, sit uncomfortably close to, or visually interrupt a frame. Until those conditions are checked on the wall, choosing a count on paper would be premature.
One, two, or three rectangles: what the post actually establishes
The choices can be compared, but the post does not claim that one count is always correct. The table below records the role each option plays in Linauer’s plan and the information that remains unstated.

| Option | Where it appears in the plan | Reason it is being considered | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| One rectangle | Each foyer wall; several bedroom areas, including behind the bed | Keeps a wall’s composition simple and lets a single frame follow that wall’s available shape | No universal width, height, margin, or wall measurement is given |
| Two rectangles | The preferred arrangement to the right of the bedroom bathroom door; the initial choice for another undecided wall | Divides a longer span without creating as many small units as three | The post does not give the proposed dimensions or spacing |
| Three rectangles | Considered for a longer, undecided bedroom wall | Could break up a broad run when the wall and viewing distance support a denser pattern | No claim is made that three will fit, look balanced, or clear the outlets |
Wall width and length, visibility from the room’s main paths, doors, furniture, and outlets are the comparison axes. Perceived busyness is also part of the decision, but it is a visual judgment rather than a measurable threshold in this project.
A practical way to map the plan before committing
A commenter named Lori Ann described struggling with “the exact same problem” and “the math to make it work.” Another commenter suggested taping out rectangles on tricky and visible walls so the scale could be judged in the real room. Those are reader suggestions, not instructions Linauer says she followed and not tested standards, but they point to a useful planning exercise.
- List each wall separately. Record the foyer walls and the distinct bedroom spans rather than treating the entire room as one continuous elevation. Note which areas are narrow, interrupted by a door, or likely to be hidden by furniture.
- Mark fixed features. Include door openings, trim, outlets, and the bed or other large furnishings in their actual positions. The point is to see the usable visual field, not an empty rectangle on graph paper.
- Sketch the competing counts. For a longer wall, draw both the two-panel and three-panel versions. For a short or interrupted wall, include the one-panel version Linauer favors in the foyer.
- Use removable tape if a full-scale check helps. The commenter’s suggestion is to tape the proposed outlines on tricky or highly visible walls. Stand where the room is normally viewed and check whether the frames read as intentional, disappear behind furniture, or become a cluster of small shapes.
- Recheck outlets and openings. A layout that looks balanced in a blank sketch may place a frame too close to an outlet or squeeze the space beside a door. Move the outline before treating the count as final.
- Choose the simplest count that suits that wall. Linauer’s stated concern is avoiding a busy field of little rectangles. If two accomplishes the division, adding a third is not automatically an improvement.
This sequence is for visual planning only. The post does not document construction methods, fastening, adhesive, corner returns, caulking, or paint application.

Narrow sections and off-center doors
The foyer’s narrow rectangle beside an off-center doorway illustrates why a room-wide formula can be awkward. A narrow wall may support one vertical frame even when neighboring walls are wider. The objective is not to make the narrow frame equal to a frame across the room; it is to let that small wall read as a complete, deliberate surface.

Readers also discussed whether a narrow panel should continue around a corner. The comments present that as an open design question, not a rule. Continuing a line could visually connect two surfaces, while stopping at the corner could keep each wall’s composition independent. The post does not report a final decision.

Furniture that hides the lower wall
The planned single rectangle behind the bed shows that visible wall area matters more than nominal wall area. A pattern that is attractive above the headboard may be lost if several frames descend behind the bed. Before adding divisions, view the wall from the doorway and from the places where the room is normally occupied.
Electrical outlets
Outlets are one reason Linauer hesitated between two and three frames on an undecided bedroom wall. They can interrupt a clean border or force a frame to shift. Their exact locations and the proposed molding clearances are not given, so the project cannot supply a spacing rule. They belong on the layout drawing before a panel count is locked.
Visibility and visual busyness
A wall seen immediately from the foyer or bedroom entry may deserve a different level of restraint from a wall mostly hidden by furniture. Linauer’s own phrase is that she does not want “the walls looking busy with a lot of little rectangles.” That is her preference for this home, not a universal test of good paneling. The two-versus-three decision remains a matter of how the pattern reads in context.
Picture-frame molding versus judge’s paneling
Linauer explicitly chose simple picture-frame molding instead of the more laborious judge’s paneling. That comparison explains the intended character of the project: a straightforward series of applied rectangular frames rather than a more involved paneling treatment. It does not specify a profile, thickness, material, or labor time, and it should not be read as a product recommendation.
Because no brand or retailer is named, a reader looking for paintable picture-frame molding would still need to choose a profile and material separately. Nothing in the update indicates that a particular product was tested or that one specification is required for the proposed layout.
What this update does—and does not—answer
- Answered: the walls were primed; most received a second coat before the primer ran out; simple picture-frame molding was selected over judge’s paneling; the foyer is planned at one rectangle per wall; several bedroom areas use one rectangle; two are preferred beside the bathroom door; and another wall is still between two and three.
- Not answered: wall dimensions, rectangle dimensions, spacing, molding profile, material, brand, retailer, cost, quantity, corner treatment, fastening method, caulking, paint color, and installation dates.
- Still influencing the plan: wall visibility, doors, furniture, outlets, narrow sections, and whether additional divisions create a busy appearance.
Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a progress post from being mistaken for a completed room or a universal installation method.
The useful lesson for a similar renovation
The most transferable idea is not a specific number of frames. It is the willingness to let each wall have its own composition while maintaining a consistent molding language throughout the room. One rectangle can be intentional on a narrow or furniture-obstructed wall; two can divide a longer run; three can remain an option when a broad, visible wall can carry more detail. The final choice should be made after doors, outlets, corners, and furniture are represented at full scale.
Linauer’s bedroom and foyer therefore remain works in progress. The primer establishes a prepared surface, while the taped or sketched alternatives establish what still needs visual testing. Until those decisions are resolved and the molding is actually installed, the project is best understood as a thoughtful wall-by-wall plan rather than a finished wainscoting reveal.
