A bedroom table lamp can look completely different when you change the base, the shade, or both. The most reliable makeover starts by identifying the base and shade materials, deciding whether the lamp provides task or ambient light, then matching the finish and proportions to the bedroom textiles. A new shade alone can change the room-facing silhouette; paint and small hardware changes can make the original base look intentional.

What creates a visible before-and-after
Photograph the lamp before touching it, then decide which element is actually making the room look dated. Four changes cover most successful makeovers:

The goal is not simply a brighter color. It is a lamp that has the right scale, shade coverage, light direction, and finish for its exact position beside the bed.
Study the original lamp before choosing supplies
Unplug the lamp, remove the shade, and inspect the base, socket, cord, switch, harp or fitter, and finial. Identify whether the base is ceramic, timber, metal, or another material, and check how the shade attaches. A paper-and-adhesive treatment is not universal: the July 2025 Bunnings guide demonstrates its tissue-paper and Mod Podge method on a ceramic base with a cotton shade and says the base technique does not suit timber or metal. Read the paint and adhesive label for the actual substrate before buying anything.

These measurements prevent a makeover that looks attractive in a close-up but leaves the socket exposed or makes the lamp unstable. Record the bulb type and wattage shown on the lamp or bulb packaging so the replacement shade can provide the required clearance.
Three documented makeover directions
Paint, recover, and embellish an inexpensive lamp
In Brittni Mehlhoff’s Curbly project from November 5, 2014, an inexpensive clearance lamp received a top-to-bottom update. The materials were spray paint, medium-to-fine sandpaper, fabric, Mod Podge, a foam brush, painter’s tape, and an iron. The shade was removed and recovered, while the base was sanded where needed, masked around the bulb housing and cord, and spray-painted in several coats in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors. Mehlhoff reported a custom light for about $30; that is her historical, project-specific estimate, not a current market price. The complete sequence is documented in the Curbly makeover tutorial.

Coordinate a pair with bedroom textiles
Kristi Linauer’s December 12, 2025 bedroom project used secondhand lamps, primer, orange/coral spray paint, hand-painted gold and white details, and new shades. She selected a lamp color that related to fabric and drapery details in the room, then replaced the original finials with smaller ones because the originals looked too bulky. Linauer reported about $50 per lamp including the shade. That amount reflects her project, date, and materials; it is not a general estimate for every lamp or region. She also noted that she might later adjust the gold sheen and white tone, a useful reminder that a finish can be refined after seeing it in the room. Add texture to a ceramic base and cotton shade
Bunnings’ July 2025 craft guide uses tissue paper and Mod Podge on a ceramic lamp base and cotton shade, then adds acrylic-paint designs with artist’s brushes. Its listed materials include tape, acrylic paints, brushes, and the lamp itself. This route produces visible texture rather than a smooth sprayed finish, but its ceramic-and-cotton scope matters: do not transfer the base method to timber or metal without a product system specifically intended for those surfaces. Prepare and work safely
Cosmetic work should be separated from electrical repair. Follow this order so paint, adhesive, and loose dust do not reach energized parts:
- Unplug and disassemble. Remove the shade and bulb, and place small hardware in a labeled container. Do not begin while the cord is connected.
- Inspect the substrate and finish. Clean the base and shade according to their materials. Lightly sand only where the existing finish and product instructions allow it; aggressive sanding can damage veneer, plating, or a fragile ceramic glaze.
- Protect electrical components. Mask the cord, socket, switch, and bulb housing with painter’s tape or remove components only if you are qualified to do so. Keep overspray and wet adhesive away from every electrical part.
- Apply the chosen coating. Use spray paint outdoors or in the ventilation specified on its label, and build several light coats rather than flooding details. For paper, fabric, or Mod Podge work, smooth wrinkles and keep adhesive off the fitter and socket.
- Dry completely. Respect the product’s drying and curing directions. A surface that feels dry can still transfer paint or release moisture when the shade is installed.
- Reassemble and check fit. Install the shade, finial, and bulb only after all finishes and adhesives are thoroughly dry. Check that the lamp stands securely and that the bulb has the clearance required by the lamp and bulb manufacturers.
Bunnings states the core precaution this way: “If painting a table lamp, make sure it’s not plugged into the power, avoid getting paint on any electrical parts and allow to dry thoroughly before use.”
Refresh the base without losing its shape
Clean and abrade selectively
Dust, fingerprints, and polish residue can cause fisheyes or peeling. Clean first, then use medium-to-fine sandpaper only on surfaces that can accept it. Preserve molded details, maker marks, and a sound original finish when they contribute to the lamp’s character. The purpose of sanding is to remove loose material and give the new coating a suitable surface, not to erase every trace of the old lamp.

Mask before painting
Painter’s tape around the socket, cord entry, switch, and any unpainted trim creates a sharp boundary and protects components. Cover the work area, hold the lamp so overspray cannot settle into the socket, and follow the paint label for recoat time. Several thin coats generally preserve detail better than one heavy coat, but the product directions control the process.

Use accents and hardware as scale corrections
Gold, white, or another accent can pick out raised details, while a smaller finial can stop the top of a lamp from looking crowded. Linauer’s replacement of bulky finials is a practical example of changing perceived proportion without rebuilding the base. Test the finial and shade together before committing to a final color so the top hardware does not compete with the shade.
Recover or replace the shade for the right light
Choose a replacement by function and proportion
The Oklahoma State University Extension guide explains that a shade diffuses or blocks light to reduce glare and also contributes to room decor. Its selection criteria are the lamp’s location and role, the shape and proportion of base and shade, and the style of the lamp and room. The guide recommends a shade that covers the socket and hardware, is proportionate to the base, and has a bottom wider than the widest part of the base. For a reading or desk task, the shade should direct enough light onto the work area; for ambient bedside light, diffusion and glare control may be more important.
Use the fitter, top and bottom diameters, and shade height—not just a color sample—to compare options. A shade that technically attaches but leaves hardware visible or makes the base look top-heavy is not a successful before-and-after.
Recover a usable frame
For a fabric recovery, remove the shade if its construction permits, preserve the frame, and make a paper pattern before cutting the new fabric. The Curbly project used fabric, Mod Podge, a foam brush, and an iron; the iron helped prepare the fabric while the adhesive secured it. Keep seams away from the most visible angle, smooth gradually, and leave the fitter and any heat-sensitive trim unobstructed. Let the adhesive dry fully before installing the shade.

Use paper and adhesive only on compatible materials
The Bunnings tissue-paper method is a decorative surface treatment, not a universal repair. On its stated ceramic base and cotton shade, tissue is adhered with Mod Podge and then painted with acrylics. On a timber or metal base, select a primer and topcoat system designed for that substrate instead of assuming the paper-mache process will bond or remain durable.

Shade openings must allow heat to escape and keep the material at the clearance specified by the lamp and bulb manufacturers. The Extension guide records one bedroom desk-lamp experiment in which the first candidate shade did not provide enough light and became warm after ten minutes. A different shade fit the location and use and stayed cool to the touch after ten minutes; a third also worked aesthetically but cost more and was harder to keep clean. This was one author’s project comparison, not a controlled safety study, so use it as a reminder to test your own lamp rather than as a universal temperature rule.
After reassembly, switch the lamp on while you remain nearby. Confirm that light reaches the intended reading area, glare is acceptable from the bed, the shade remains stable, and no material contacts the bulb. If the bulb or shade manufacturer specifies a maximum wattage, bulb shape, or clearance, those instructions take precedence over a decorative preference.
Coordinate the makeover with the bedroom
Start with one existing room element—bedding, drapery, a rug, or an upholstered chair—and pull a base color or accent from it. A painted base can echo a small textile detail without matching the entire room. Metallic accents should relate to hardware already visible nearby, while a highly textured shade usually benefits from a quieter base.

Place the lamp on the actual bedside table before deciding that a color is too bright, too dull, or too warm. Linauer’s willingness to reconsider the gold sheen and white tone after installation illustrates why a sample on the lamp is more informative than a color chip alone. Check the lamp from the doorway, from the pillow, and with the room’s normal evening lighting.

Make the before-and-after evidence useful
Use a similar camera angle, distance, and time of day for both images. Keep the bedside table and surrounding textiles visible so readers can see scale and coordination, then add close-ups of the base finish, shade edge, finial, and any texture. A lit after image shows light distribution; an unlit detail shows the workmanship. Avoid changing several unrelated room elements between shots, because the lamp’s contribution becomes impossible to judge.
Record the original shade dimensions, replacement dimensions, materials, paint colors, number of coats, and drying times in your project notes. If you publish the makeover, identify which parts were reused and which were purchased so the cost and environmental claims remain specific rather than implied.

These are historical anecdotes from named authors, not current averages. Your total will change with the lamp’s condition, whether you already own brushes or tape, the price of a replacement shade, and local availability. Bunnings and the Extension guide document methods and selection criteria, not a market-wide makeover price.
Stop cosmetic work when the problem is electrical
Cracked insulation, a damaged cord, a faulty switch, exposed conductors, or corrosion is not a paint defect. Keep the lamp unplugged and treat rewiring as a separate repair. The This Old House rewiring guide, updated April 16, 2026, also says to unplug before rewiring and to consult a professional electrician if you are unsure or if problems persist. A cosmetic makeover does not require rewiring, and repainting cannot make unsafe wiring safe.
Final pre-use checklist
- The base and shade materials match the chosen paint, adhesive, and recovery method.
- All paint and adhesive is fully dry and no residue is inside the socket or on the cord.
- The shade covers the socket and hardware, is proportionate to the base, and is wider at the bottom than the widest part of the base.
- The fitter, finial, and base are stable, and the bulb has the clearance and wattage permitted by its instructions.
- The light serves its actual bedside role without uncomfortable glare or inadequate task illumination.
- Any wiring, switch, or cord defect has been repaired separately by a competent person before the lamp is used.
The Bottom Line
The strongest bedroom lamp makeovers make one coherent decision: preserve or repaint a sound base, choose or recover a shade that fits both the lamp and its job, and connect the finish to something already in the room. Work unplugged, protect every electrical part, let coatings cure, and judge the result by light, heat clearance, proportion, and stability—not by the paint color alone.
