Kristi Linauer’s bedroom trim project became difficult because three problems overlapped: an uneven floor, wavy walls and out-of-square geometry. The entrance wall went fairly smoothly, but references that normally help keep trim consistent stopped agreeing with one another. Measuring from the floor produced one result, measuring from the ceiling produced another, and bubble and laser levels still left her repeatedly removing and reinstalling pieces.

Her progress report is useful less as a finished wainscoting tutorial than as a warning about layout. In this particular room, a line could be level and still look wrong against a crooked opening or irregular floor. Linauer’s practical conclusion was to check the floor and ceiling before committing to wainscoting and to reconsider the plan when the room is visibly uneven.
Why this bedroom became such a difficult trim project
Wainscoting depends on a visual relationship among several lines: the floor, the upper trim or chair rail, door and window openings, corners and the wall itself. In a regular room, those references are close enough that a consistent measurement can make the installation look intentional. Linauer describes a room where they did not cooperate.
The floor was uneven, the walls were wavy and the room was not square. Each defect created a different kind of mismatch. A high spot in the floor affected the apparent height of the baseboard. A dip created space below it. A wall that bowed away from the trim left a gap behind the chair rail. The flooring itself did not reach the wall evenly because the room’s geometry changed from one area to another.
Those conditions compounded rather than appearing as one isolated defect. Correcting a line in one location could make it disagree with a doorway, a foyer transition or another wall. That is why the account reads as a series of adjustments instead of a single measurement error.

What happened as the work moved around the room
The entrance wall was the easy section
Linauer says the entrance wall went relatively smoothly. That early success did not predict the rest of the room. As she continued around the perimeter, the floor, ceiling and wall surfaces supplied less dependable references.
Floor and ceiling measurements disagreed
She first tried to place trim by measuring from the floor. Because the floor was uneven, equal measurements did not create a line that behaved consistently around the room. Measuring from the ceiling produced a similar problem: the ceiling was not a reliable parallel reference either.
Levels helped establish lines, but did not remove the irregularities
Linauer also used a bubble level and a laser level. Her account does not present either tool as a failed product; it shows the limit of what a layout tool can do in an irregular room. A level can establish a horizontal or vertical reference, but it cannot make a bowed wall flat, make a floor plane even or make a doorway square. That distinction is an inference from her experience, not a controlled comparison of tools.
The chair-rail transition exposed the error
At the point where the bedroom chair rail met the foyer chair rail, Linauer found that she was about 1.5 inches off. That figure is her measurement at one point in this project, not a general trim tolerance. She repeatedly removed and reinstalled pieces, including the chair rail, while trying to make the lines meet convincingly.

Floor, wall and opening problems in her examples
| Location or reference | What Linauer observed | Effect on the installation |
|---|---|---|
| Floor high point at a corner | The baseboard appeared to rise with the high point in the floor. | The baseboard line no longer looked consistent through the corner. |
| Wavy wall behind the chair rail | The wall left a visible gap behind the rail. | The gap was too large, in her judgment, to disguise with caulk. |
| Floor dip | A space remained below the baseboard. | She questioned whether ordinary quarter round would cover it. |
| Flooring at the wall | The flooring did not reach the wall evenly because the room was not square. | The floor edge supplied another irregular line beside the baseboard. |
| Doorway | The chair rail had to align with the door’s grid even though the surrounding wall was not level. | The opening became a visual reference that competed with the wall’s geometry. |
These are observations from one bedroom. They do not establish an allowable gap size, a required molding profile or a universal method for correcting trim.
The unresolved fixes she was considering
Trimming the baseboard around the high point
At the time of the update, Linauer expected to finish but was considering removing and trimming some baseboard to disguise the floor’s high point. The wording matters: this was a proposed way to handle her specific corner, not a completed repair demonstrated in the post.
Questioning quarter round at the floor dip
She also thought the gap below the baseboard might be too large for regular quarter round. The post does not identify a different molding, give a dimension or confirm a solution. Quarter round is therefore part of the problem she was evaluating, not a confirmed remedy.

Rejecting caulk for the chair-rail gap
Linauer said the gap behind the chair rail was too large to fill with caulk. That is her assessment of the visible opening in this room. It should not be read as a universal rule that defines when caulk is or is not appropriate.

What the account reveals about layout references
The most important lesson is that “level” and “looks aligned” are related but not identical goals. A laser or bubble level can give you a repeatable reference line. If the adjacent floor, ceiling, wall or opening departs from that line, however, the trim may still look uneven to the eye or may expose a gap. In Linauer’s room, the tool did not eliminate the need to make visual decisions and reinstall pieces.
Likewise, measuring a fixed distance from an uneven floor can preserve a number without preserving a straight-looking band. Measuring from an uneven ceiling has the same limitation. The account does not rank floor measurements, ceiling measurements or level references as universally best; it shows that none solved every transition in this room.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A pre-wainscoting assessment to make before committing
Linauer’s experience can be turned into a set of planning questions. They are a diagnostic checklist, not a building code or a substitute for an on-site assessment.
- Inspect the floor and ceiling as continuous references. Look for visible rises, dips or changes before deciding that one surface can set the height for the entire room.
- Check each wall for bows and waves. A rail can follow a reference line while still standing away from a wall in places. Identify where that separation will be visible.
- Study corners and transitions. The most revealing locations may be a corner, a doorway or the point where trim from two rooms must meet, rather than the middle of a long wall.
- Compare the trim line with architectural grids. Linauer had to contend with a door grid even when the surrounding wall was not level. Decide which visual relationship matters most at each opening before fastening pieces.
- Dry-fit a representative section. A short trial can reveal whether the baseboard, chair rail, floor edge and opening agree. If they do not, the trial exposes the conflict before it extends around the room.
- Decide how large gaps will be handled. Do not assume that caulk or a standard small molding will hide every opening. The unresolved gaps in Linauer’s room were part of the layout decision, not an afterthought.
How to decide whether to continue, change the plan or stop
Continue when the conflicts are mainly visual and manageable
If a test section shows that the key lines can meet acceptably and the remaining adjustments are limited, continuing may be reasonable. The account offers no measurements that define “acceptable,” so that decision belongs to the person viewing the room and choosing the finish.

Change the layout when one reference repeatedly breaks another
A plan deserves reconsideration when a consistent floor measurement makes the doorway look wrong, a level chair rail leaves conspicuous wall gaps or a transition to another room cannot be made without a large offset. Linauer’s roughly 1.5-inch mismatch at the foyer connection is an example of a conflict that forced repeated rework.
Pause when the proposed cover-up is larger than the trim can plausibly hide
Her concerns about regular quarter round and caulk illustrate a useful stopping point: if the gap is visibly beyond what the selected molding or filler can disguise, installing more pieces may only lock in the problem. Reassess the trim arrangement instead of assuming the finish coat will make it disappear.
Why this is a progress report, not a completed tutorial
Kristi Linauer’s post, “Bedroom Trim Progress (It’s Not Going Well),” was published October 3, 2025, and shows an update date of November 8, 2025. It documents a personal DIY project in her home while the work was still underway. She expected to finish, but the post does not show a completed repair, provide independent measurements or establish construction standards.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat status is important when applying the story elsewhere. The report can help a homeowner recognize warning signs—uneven floors, wavy walls, out-of-square corners and difficult openings—but it cannot tell you the correct gap tolerance, the molding size that will solve a particular dip or whether a proposed baseboard cut ultimately worked.
Linauer’s takeaway for anyone planning wainscoting
Her advice is direct: “If you’re wanting to do wainscoting in a room, make sure that the floor and ceiling are at least somewhat level first.” In context, “somewhat level” is not a published specification. It is a practical warning based on how quickly an uneven room turned a straightforward trim layout into repeated removal, adjustment and reinstallation.
The bedroom’s difficulty came from overlapping conditions, not from one defective tool or one bad measurement. Check the room’s references before buying into a full perimeter layout, test the transitions that will be seen most clearly and treat any proposed filler or auxiliary molding as a question to verify rather than an automatic fix.
