Kristi Linauer’s bedroom had reached the final stretch of its trim project in the update dated October 8, 2025: the crown molding was installed, most of the show molding was in place, and the picture-frame molding had been laid out but not installed. Nail-hole filling, sanding, caulking, and trim paint were still ahead. The page also displays November 8, 2025 alongside the post date, so this should be read as a dated progress snapshot rather than a statement of the room’s condition today.
What the October 2025 update actually shows
The post is a first-person account of one bedroom renovation, not a general installation manual. Linauer was documenting decisions made in a room with uneven surfaces while working largely by herself. Her report is useful because it shows how the plan changed around real walls, corners, joints, and outlet locations, but her measurements and judgments belong to this project. They should not be treated as universal limits for every installer or room.

| Trim or surface | Status in the dated update | What remained |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom crown molding | Installed on all bedroom walls | Filling, sanding, caulking, and painting after the remaining trim work |
| Show molding | Most installed | Completion and finishing |
| Picture-frame molding | Layout marked on the walls | Installation, followed by finishing work |
| Baseboard at a sloped corner | Removed, repositioned, and recut | The joint was still visibly imperfect from a straight-on view |
| Wavy wall near the chair rail and lower wall | Built out with several layers of drywall mud | Final sanding and caulking of smaller remaining gaps |
That distinction between installed, laid out, and finished matters. Trim can be physically attached while the room still looks incomplete because joints, nail holes, transitions, surface repairs, and paint have not been addressed. In this update, the large installation decisions were mostly made, but the cosmetic work that makes the pieces read as one continuous design was still pending.
Why the crown molding was cut into shorter sections
Linauer was installing the crown molding alone. She found that pieces around 110 inches or shorter were manageable for her, while longer pieces became difficult to handle without another person. That number describes her ability to control a long board in this room; it is not a recommended maximum length for crown molding or a safety standard.

Cutting a long run into shorter sections meant that every wall had at least one joint. A joint adds another place that must be aligned, fastened, filled, sanded, and painted, but it also made the work physically possible for a solo installer. The decision reflects a practical trade-off: fewer, longer pieces can reduce visible seams, while shorter pieces can be easier to lift, position, and hold in place.
The update does not provide a universal rule for where to place a joint, how much overlap to use, or which cutting method is best. It records the lengths Linauer could handle and the resulting need to work with multiple sections. Anyone using the post as a reference should separate that personal handling judgment from the room’s visual design decisions.
How the bedroom crown met the foyer crown
One of the most awkward transitions occurred where the bedroom crown molding met the crown molding in the foyer. Instead of forcing one long piece to solve the entire transition, Linauer used a separate piece about seven inches long and adjusted the transition so it could meet the foyer corner.
The change left a gap that could not simply be ignored. She filled it with air-dry clay, shaped the material, and planned to sand it so the join could be refined. This is a project-specific repair described in her account; the post does not establish air-dry clay as a general trim-joint product or compare it with other fillers.
The episode illustrates why a trim plan can change at a doorway or outside corner even when the straight wall runs seem straightforward. Existing crown, a nearby corner, and the direction from which pieces approach one another all affect the transition. In this room, a small dedicated piece allowed Linauer to adapt the meeting point rather than recut every adjoining run.

Making the baseboard meet at a sloped corner
A sloped corner created a different problem at the baseboard. Linauer removed two boards and repositioned them so their upper edges were level. She then used a piece of wood as a spacer to mark the cut line and cut the boards with a table saw so they would meet at the corner.
The goal was not simply to close the baseboard joint. She wanted the upper edge to establish a square starting point for the planned picture-frame molding. In other words, the baseboard adjustment was part of the larger wall design, not an isolated repair.
She also acknowledged the limitation of the result: viewed straight on, the joint remained visible. That admission is important because it separates a workable alignment from a perfectly invisible one. The boards met and created the intended level reference, but the corner still showed evidence of the underlying geometry and the cut.
The post does not provide a general method for measuring sloped corners, a recommended saw setup, or a tolerance for visible joints. It documents the sequence used in this room—remove, reposition, mark with a spacer, cut, and fit—and the fact that the visual result was acceptable for the broader design even though it was not flawless from every angle.

Building out the wavy wall with drywall mud
Uneven drywall affected the wall around the chair rail and farther down the wall. Linauer described the surface as wavy or “wonky” and chose drywall mud, also called drywall joint compound, to build out the dip. Rather than trying to bridge the entire irregularity in one pass, she applied multiple layers.

At the time of the update, she estimated that she might be on the fourth layer and still needed to sand the final layer. The remaining smaller gaps would then be within what she considered caulking range. The wording matters: the post records her visual assessment of this wall, not a general measurement that determines when joint compound should end and caulk should begin.
Layering allowed the wall to be brought forward gradually, with drying and sanding between stages. It also avoided presenting the repair as finished before the final surface had been sanded. The update does not identify a compound brand, drying time, layer thickness, or tool choice, so those details cannot be inferred from her account.
For readers studying the progress, the useful point is the distinction between a broad depression and a small finishing gap. Linauer used drywall mud to change the plane of the wall, then reserved caulking for the smaller irregularities she expected to remain. That was her approach in this bedroom; the post does not test alternative fillers or establish comparative performance.
Planning picture-frame molding around outlets
Linauer had marked the planned picture-frame molding on the walls but had not installed it yet. Electrical outlets created a spacing concern because the frames needed to relate to the outlet positions as well as to the trim already installed on other walls.
She worried that the outlets might force a different spacing pattern, then concluded that the planned layout appeared to work. No dimensions, outlet-clearance measurements, or universal layout formula are given. The update therefore supports a design-planning lesson rather than a numeric rule: mark the proposed rectangles in the actual room and check how they sit relative to fixed features before cutting the molding.

Because the baseboard had been adjusted with square picture-frame lines in mind, the outlet check was part of a connected sequence. The wall repair, baseboard height, frame proportions, and outlet locations had to coexist. The post ends at the point where the layout seemed workable; installation and final visual judgment had not yet been reported.

After the picture-frame molding was installed, Linauer planned to finish the trim in a specific order: fill the nail holes, sand, caulk, and paint the trim. Each stage addresses a different type of imperfection.

- Sanding: intended to smooth filler, shaped transition material, and the final drywall-mud layer.
- Caulk: intended for the smaller gaps that remained after the larger wall irregularities had been built out.
- Trim paint: the final coating planned to unify the pieces and conceal prepared joints and filled holes.
This sequence was a plan at the time of publication, not a completed result. The source does not report the finished paint color, the final appearance, or whether every planned frame was ultimately installed.
Her next bedroom project was expected to be an upholstered headboard. That planned change of focus reinforces that the trim work was nearing completion but had not yet reached its final, painted state.
What this project reveals about working with imperfect walls
Design lines can be more important than hiding every defect
The baseboard work shows Linauer prioritizing level upper edges and square picture-frame geometry, even though the corner remained visible from a straight-on view. In an older or irregular room, a design can look coherent without every underlying surface becoming perfectly straight.

Solo installation changes the construction plan
The shorter crown sections were a response to handling constraints. That choice increased the number of joints but reduced the difficulty of positioning long pieces alone. Her roughly 110-inch observation is a personal reference point, not a target that another installer should adopt without considering board weight, access, ceiling height, tools, and help.
Large and small irregularities were treated differently
The wavy wall was addressed with successive layers of drywall mud, while the smaller gaps were expected to be caulked later. The account does not claim that this division applies to every wall; it shows how one renovation separated surface correction from final joint sealing.
Layout was checked before the decorative trim was attached
Marking the picture-frame pattern before installation gave Linauer a chance to see how outlets affected the spacing. Her conclusion that the layout appeared to fit is specific to the bedroom shown in the post and does not replace measuring another room’s outlets and wall widths.
How to read the post without treating it as a universal guide
The most reliable facts are the actions Linauer says she took and the status she reported on the publication date. The account does not supply controlled comparisons between fillers, independent measurements of wall flatness, product specifications, or a finished-room inspection. It is best used as a project log: it shows how one homeowner adapted crown, baseboard, wall preparation, and decorative layout when the room did not provide perfectly straight surfaces.
It also demonstrates why “trim installed” and “trim finished” are different milestones. Installation covers cutting and attaching the pieces. Finishing covers the visual continuity work that follows: shaping a transition, correcting a wall plane, filling holes, smoothing surfaces, sealing small gaps, and applying paint. Linauer’s bedroom had crossed the first milestone and was still moving through the second.
As a dated progress report, the October 8, 2025 post leaves the final outcome open. It records a crown-molding installation completed throughout the bedroom, show molding nearly complete, a picture-frame layout that appeared compatible with the outlets, and several unfinished preparation tasks. Later conditions of the room are not established by this update.
