If you have decided to buy rather than build, choose a bedside table by measuring three things first: the top of your mattress, the clear floor space beside the bed, and the items you need to store. Then select the storage layout, material, footprint and convenience features that fit those measurements. Retailer guides agree that the usable surface should be close to mattress height, but their figures come from different markets and are not a universal furniture standard.
Start with measurements, not a style
A nightstand can look ideal online and still be awkward if its top is too low, its drawers collide with the bed or there is no clear path around it. Measure the room and bed before browsing.

Measure the mattress top
Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, including any topper. Do not measure only the bed frame. Wayfair UK describes an average mattress as about 64 cm and gives 58–71 cm as a suggested “standard nightstand” height range. That is UK retailer guidance, not an industry rule. Room & Board says a surface a few inches higher than the mattress is generally ideal, while also acknowledging personal preference. Koala Australia’s 2026 guide recommends a table top within 5–8 cm of the mattress top and gives a broader 50–70 cm height range for its market.
Use these figures as a starting point, then test the reach from your usual sleeping position. A slightly higher top may be easier to reach if your mattress is tall; a lower one can feel better beside a low platform bed. The practical test is whether you can switch off a lamp, set down a drink or reach a book without stretching your shoulder.
Measure the floor footprint and circulation space
Record the maximum width and depth available between the bed, wall, radiator, door swing and walking route. Leave enough clearance to open every drawer fully and to pass the table without turning sideways. Include skirting boards, outlets and any protruding headboard in the measurement.

Those are approximate retailer averages, not binding dimensions. Koala’s Australian guide gives examples around 40–60 cm wide and 35–50 cm deep. A compact table can be useful in a narrow room, but depth matters as much as width if the bed is close to a walkway.

Interpret width labels cautiously
Wayfair UK groups tables under 54 cm as narrow, 54–74 cm as standard and over 74 cm as wide. These categories help you filter that catalogue; they are not universal definitions. Choose the smallest surface that accommodates your lamp, phone, water and any medication, or choose wider furniture if you deliberately want space for décor and reading material.
Choose the storage layout around your routine
Storage is a daily-use decision rather than a purely visual one. List what must be reachable at night, what you want hidden and what you are happy to display.
Drawer nightstands
Drawers conceal chargers, medication, tissues, glasses and other small items that make an open surface look untidy. Check the internal drawer dimensions, not just the external width. A narrow drawer may not accept a large e-reader or headphone case. Ask whether the drawer has a stop, full-extension runners or soft-close hardware; these are model-specific features.

Shelves keep books, baskets and a water bottle immediately accessible and can make a small table feel visually lighter. They also expose dust and clutter, so measure the shelf opening for the objects you intend to use. Confirm whether the shelf is fixed or adjustable and whether the back is open for cable routing.

Mixed drawer-and-shelf designs
A drawer above an open shelf separates private items from frequently used books or a basket. This is a useful compromise when you want concealment without losing quick access. Compare the height of the shelf with your tallest book or storage bin; marketing photographs often show smaller objects than the ones you own.
Closed cabinets and doors
A door hides larger items and can give a cleaner appearance than several shallow drawers. Verify the door’s hinge side and swing arc against the bed and wall. If the table will sit tightly beside the mattress, a drawer or lift-up door may be easier to operate than a side-hinged door.
Compare materials and finishes by fit, not assumed durability
Retailer catalogues list wood and veneers, metal, glass, stone and combinations of these materials. The available evidence does not establish that one category is inherently more durable than another, so judge the construction and finish of the exact model.

Finish is a practical choice as well as an aesthetic one. Glossy tops show fingerprints and lamp reflections more readily; textured or matte surfaces may disguise small marks but can be harder to wipe clean. Ask the seller for care instructions before assuming a finish tolerates spills, cleaning products or hot objects.

Decide between freestanding, floating and clip-on formats
Freestanding tables
Freestanding nightstands are easiest to reposition and generally offer the widest choice of drawers, shelves and surface sizes. They need a level floor and enough clearance for their legs or plinth. Check whether the back can sit close to the wall without covering an outlet.
Floating tables
A wall-mounted table frees floor space and makes vacuuming easier. Koala’s Australian examples show this format alongside conventional bedside tables, but the mounting advice is market- and product-specific. Confirm the wall type, fixing method, maximum supported load and required tools before buying. A floating table is unsuitable if you cannot locate a structural fixing point or if the wall construction is not compatible with the supplied hardware.
Clip-on or bed-mounted options
Clip-on tables can work where there is no usable floor space, but the bed frame must have a compatible rail or edge and must tolerate the load. Measure the frame thickness and inspect the clamp padding so it will not damage the finish. Do not assume a clip-on table is stable simply because it fits dimensionally.

- Cable management: Look for a real cable aperture or channel, its diameter and its position relative to your outlet.
- Soft-close drawers: Confirm that the feature applies to every drawer, not just the drawer shown in a product photograph.
- Lighting or sensors: Check how the control works at night and whether a replaceable bulb, adapter or battery is supplied.
- Casters or adjustable feet: Make sure they lock securely and do not raise the table above the comfortable reach height you measured.
Convenience hardware should not override basic fit. A charging table that blocks the outlet, or a drawer that cannot open beside the bed, creates more friction than it removes.
Understand assembly and wall-safety requirements
“Ready-made” describes the product category, not necessarily the condition in which it arrives. Sauder identifies its nightstands as ready-to-assemble, while Wayfair separately lists fully assembled options. Read the delivery description for the exact item: it may arrive assembled, partially assembled or flat-packed.
For flat-packed furniture, check the package dimensions, estimated assembly time, number of people recommended and whether tools are supplied. Photograph hardware before beginning, keep the instructions with the parts and do not substitute fasteners unless the maker explicitly permits it. Recheck that drawers are square and that the unit does not rock before loading it.
Some tables include anti-tip or wall-attachment hardware. The IKEA Malaysia IDANAS buying guide states: “Furniture with included attachment devices must be secured to the wall according to the assembly instructions.” Follow that instruction for the supplied product, use fixings appropriate to your wall construction and keep the attachment point accessible for inspection. A table that appears stable when empty can become hazardous when a drawer is pulled out or a child climbs on it.

Inspect the listing before placing the order
- Record your measurements: mattress-top height, maximum width and depth, outlet position, bed-to-wall gap and walking clearance.
- Set a usable surface requirement: list the lamp, phone, drink, glasses and any other object that must fit without stacking.
- Filter by storage: choose drawers, shelves, a combination or a door according to what you want hidden or visible.
- Check the technical drawing: confirm overall and internal dimensions, leg or plinth clearance, drawer opening and cable holes.
- Read delivery language: distinguish fully assembled from ready-to-assemble and verify package size for stairs, lifts and doorways.
- Review safety information: identify supplied anti-tip hardware, wall requirements and the stated maximum load.
- Confirm market-specific details: electrical fittings, currency, delivery region, warranty and return terms can vary by country and change over time.
Current prices are not comparable across the guides because they refer to different markets, dates and models. Compare the exact listing in your currency and include delivery, assembly and any required wall-fixing hardware in the total.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by bed-frame height alone: measure the mattress top, including toppers.
- Treating a retailer category as a standard: labels such as “narrow” or “standard” are catalogue guidance; rely on the actual dimensions.
- Ignoring drawer clearance: mark the drawer’s full projection on the floor before ordering.
- Assuming a feature is included: verify whether charging pads, adapters, baskets or wall fixings are supplied.
- Ordering a wall-mounted table without checking the wall: confirm substrate, fixing points and load capacity first.
- Expecting ready-made to mean assembled: read the delivery condition and assembly requirements for the specific SKU.
- Loading an unsecured unit: install the supplied attachment devices exactly as directed.
What to search for when comparing options
Use a precise search phrase that reflects your storage need, such as “bedside table with drawer,” “compact bedside table,” “nightstand with shelves” or “floating bedside table.” Open several listings and compare their dimension drawings rather than relying on photographs, which can make a table look larger or smaller than it is.
The right purchase is the table whose surface height, footprint, storage and installation requirements match your room. Material, colour and added technology should refine that choice, not compensate for a poor fit.
