Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45 is a warm off-white with an official light reflectance value (LRV) of 81.91. Benjamin Moore places it in the Off White Collection and describes it as “An essential white paint color with just the right amount of warmth.” That makes it a versatile near-white, but not a guaranteed identical white in every room: lighting and surrounding finishes can change how its warmth is perceived.

The most reliable way to judge it is to compare a substantial sample with your flooring, counters, tile, cabinetry, and natural and artificial light before committing to paint.

What color is Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45?

Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45 is a warm off-white rather than a stark, blue-leaning white. It belongs to Benjamin Moore’s Off White Collection. The manufacturer’s description is deliberately restrained: “An essential white paint color with just the right amount of warmth.” That wording identifies the design direction without promising that the color will look the same on every wall.

The exact color reviewed here is Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45. The name is also used for other products. For example, BEHR Swiss Coffee 12 is a separate color with a different brand and code. A can, swatch, or online listing should show both “Benjamin Moore” and “OC-45” if you are trying to match this review.

Those are the fixed identification details. Descriptions such as “creamy,” “soft,” or “yellow” are interpretations of how a near-white appears in a particular setting, not additional formulas or separate versions of OC-45.

What does an LRV of 81.91 mean?

LRV, or light reflectance value, describes how much visible light a color reflects relative to a scale in which darker colors are near zero and highly reflective whites are near 100. An LRV of 81.91 places Swiss Coffee in the light, reflective range. It is bright enough to function as a white in many interiors while retaining more visual softness than an ultra-bright, cool white.

The number is a reference point, not a room-performance guarantee. It does not tell you that a wall will have the same apparent brightness under north-facing daylight, warm bulbs, a shaded porch, or a room with dark flooring. Wall texture, finish, surrounding colors, and the amount and direction of light all affect what your eye sees.

Use 81.91 to organize a comparison between samples, not to skip the sample stage. Two colors with similar LRVs can still differ noticeably in warmth, and a color with a higher LRV can appear less bright if adjacent surfaces make it look creamier.

What are the Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee undertones?

Benjamin Moore identifies Swiss Coffee as warm. An independent color review describes it as soft and creamy, which is useful design language for understanding its general character. Neither description should be treated as an instrument-tested undertone map that predicts every room.

Near-whites are especially sensitive to context. A warm white can look more neutral beside a strongly warm wood, more cream-colored beside a clean blue-white, or more muted against a high-contrast dark surface. The same painted surface can shift from morning daylight to afternoon shade and then under electric lighting.

That is why undertone questions are best answered with a room-specific comparison. Look at OC-45 beside the permanent finishes that will remain after painting. If the floor, backsplash, stone, or upholstery has a yellow, pink, gray, green, or blue cast, the white can appear to pick up or resist that influence even though the paint itself has not changed.

Will Swiss Coffee look too yellow in your room?

It may read warmer in a room with warm bulbs, golden afternoon light, honey-toned wood, beige tile, or other creamy finishes. In a cooler space with gray stone, blue daylight, or crisp white trim, its warmth may be more noticeable by contrast. There is no responsible universal answer that it will or will not look yellow.

Instead, ask whether the room needs a soft warm counterpoint or a visually sharp, cool white. Swiss Coffee is a better candidate for the first goal. If you want a blue-based or highly icy white, its published description and warm character point in a different direction.

Evaluate the sample at multiple times of day and with the lights you actually use. View it from the room’s normal seating and standing positions, not only from a few inches away. Keep the sample next to the largest fixed surfaces; a white that looks balanced on a blank wall can look different when it meets a countertop or floor.

How to sample Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee correctly

Benjamin Moore cautions that screen colors may differ from actual paint and recommends obtaining free color chips from a local store. A digital square is useful for narrowing options, but it cannot reproduce your wall, lighting, sheen, or neighboring materials.

  1. Confirm the identity. Check that the sample is Benjamin Moore OC-45, not another brand’s similarly named Swiss Coffee.
  2. Start with a physical chip. Get the manufacturer’s color chip from a local Benjamin Moore store. This is a quick way to verify the color before buying a larger sample.
  3. Move to a substantial sample. Use a large painted board, poster-sized sample, or peel-and-stick paint sample sheet so the color occupies enough area for your eye to judge its warmth.
  4. Place it beside fixed finishes. Put the sample next to flooring, countertops, backsplash tile, cabinets, trim, stone, and any furniture that will stay. Do not evaluate it in isolation.
  5. Test more than one wall. A wall facing a different direction or receiving a different amount of daylight can produce a different impression.
  6. Check the full day. Observe it in morning light, midday light, late-day light, and the room’s evening artificial lighting. Record which conditions matter most for how you use the room.
  7. Step back. Judge the sample from normal viewing distances and from the doorway. A color that seems creamy close up may read as a balanced off-white across the room.
  8. Keep the sample in place. Live with it long enough to see changing weather and lighting. Make the final decision only after comparing it under the conditions in which the room will actually be occupied.

This process addresses the two central uncertainties with a near-white: the manufacturer’s warning about screen representation and the way surrounding finishes influence perceived warmth.

Is Swiss Coffee a good kitchen-cabinet color?

Homes & Gardens presents Swiss Coffee as a kitchen-cabinet option and attributes the recommendation to Miriam Dillon, an interior designer at BarnesVanze Architects. Dillon calls it “a favorite warm white for kitchen cabinets” and describes it as a neutral white that does not feel too yellow or beige.

That is a designer perspective, not a controlled performance test. Whether it works on your cabinets depends on the room’s light, the cabinet material, the counter and backsplash, and the wall color used with it.

Jordan Ross, principal designer at PCD Studios, recommends grounding Swiss Coffee cabinets with walnut or white oak, adding brass details, and using a dramatic marble slab for contrast. These suggestions show one way to balance a warm white: pair it with materials that provide depth and deliberate contrast rather than trying to make every surface the same white.

Cabinet decisions to make before painting

  • Compare OC-45 with the countertop and backsplash in the exact kitchen lighting.
  • Check whether existing flooring makes the cabinets appear warmer or cooler.
  • Decide whether the wall color will be the same white, a contrasting neutral, or a darker accent.
  • View hardware samples against the paint; brass, walnut, and white oak create a different visual relationship than polished chrome or very cool gray materials.
  • Test the sample on a representative cabinet door or board rather than relying only on a wall chip.

Benjamin Moore’s suggested coordinating colors

Benjamin Moore lists two combinations for OC-45. These are official suggested pairings, not proof that the colors are interchangeable or that they will suit every room.

Swiss Coffee pairing Colors listed by Benjamin Moore How to use the information
Combination 1 White Drifts OC-138 and Lush AF-475 Use as a starting palette and sample all three colors together in the intended space.
Combination 2 Fossil AF-65 and Newburg Green HC-158 Use as a second palette direction, checking how the green and neutral interact with the room’s finishes.

The manufacturer also identifies Steam AF-15, Icicle 2142-70, Vanilla Milkshake 2141-70, and Dune White 968 as similar colors. “Similar” means they are useful candidates for comparison; it does not mean they are matches, substitutes, or made with the same formula.

How to compare Swiss Coffee with other white paints

If you are deciding between two or more whites, compare them on four separate axes rather than asking which one is simply “whitest.”

1. Perceived warmth

Note which sample looks warmer or creamier beside your permanent finishes. This is a visual relationship, not a claim that one sample has a universally measurable yellow cast in every environment.

2. Published brightness

Use the available LRV figures as reference data. Swiss Coffee’s published LRV is 81.91. If another manufacturer publishes an LRV, place the numbers side by side, but do not treat a numerical difference as a prediction of identical room appearance.

3. Response to the room’s light

Observe each sample under the same daylight and electric-light conditions. Keep their positions consistent when moving them around the room so that a change in light is not confused with a change in location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Relationship to fixed materials

The winning white is the one that sits comfortably with your floor, stone, tile, wood, and furnishings. A sample that looks attractive alone can clash with a permanent finish; a slightly less bright sample can look more intentional when the whole palette is considered.

Where Swiss Coffee can work well

Its warm off-white character makes OC-45 a candidate for spaces where a soft neutral is more useful than a stark white. Potential applications include kitchen cabinetry, walls, trim, built-ins, and other large painted surfaces. The color page and designer commentary support the kitchen-cabinet use case; other applications still require room-specific sampling.

In open-plan homes, compare the sample from each connected area. A color that feels balanced in a bright kitchen may look warmer in a hallway with less daylight. If several rooms share one color, check the transitions at doorways and where different flooring or cabinetry meets.

For a calm, low-contrast scheme, pair it with similarly restrained materials. For more definition, use the designer-suggested approach of grounding warm white with wood, metal, or a high-contrast stone. The correct balance depends on the finishes already present rather than on a universal rule about the color.

Common mistakes when choosing OC-45

  • Buying from a name alone: “Swiss Coffee” is not a unique color identity across brands. Confirm Benjamin Moore and OC-45.
  • Trusting a phone or monitor swatch: Benjamin Moore explicitly warns that screen colors may differ.
  • Testing on a blank wall only: The floor, counter, tile, and cabinetry can alter the apparent warmth.
  • Checking one time of day: Daylight direction and electric bulbs can change the balance between warm and neutral.
  • Assuming the LRV predicts the room: 81.91 is a published reference value, not a promise of identical brightness in every setting.
  • Calling a designer opinion a guarantee: The cabinetry recommendations from Miriam Dillon and Jordan Ross are professional viewpoints, not controlled comparisons.
  • Comparing tiny chips at arm’s length: Use a larger sample and view it from normal distances before deciding.

A practical decision checklist

Before purchasing enough paint for the project, confirm each item:

  • The label identifies Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45.
  • You have checked the official LRV of 81.91 as a reference, without treating it as a room guarantee.
  • You have a physical chip or larger sample, not only a digital image.
  • The sample has been viewed beside every major fixed finish.
  • You have checked both daylight and the room’s evening lighting.
  • You know whether you want a warm neutral or a sharper, cooler white.
  • For cabinets, you have judged the color on a representative door or board.
  • If using a coordinating palette, you have sampled the proposed colors together.

What to know before buying

Benjamin Moore directs readers toward local stores for color chips and paint purchasing. A local store is also the practical place to confirm the current sample and product options available in your area. The manufacturer’s color page establishes the chip recommendation and local-store path; it does not establish a referral, affiliate, or promotional program.

A large peel-and-stick paint sample sheet can be useful when you need to move the sample between walls or compare it with fixed finishes without painting a test area. Treat it as a sampling aid, not a substitute for confirming the actual paint and finish you intend to buy.

Bottom line on Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45

Swiss Coffee OC-45 is a warm Benjamin Moore off-white with an LRV of 81.91. It can provide a softer alternative to a stark white and is a designer-mentioned option for kitchen cabinets, but its apparent creaminess depends on light and neighboring materials. Confirm the code, obtain a physical sample, compare it with the room’s permanent finishes, and observe it throughout the day before making the final purchase.
