What can a Fab Lab in the Amazon do? In Benito Juárez’s view, its value is not simply the machines it brings. It is whether people can use them to make and adapt tools for their own circumstances—and whether the work responds to priorities communities identify.
Who is Juárez, and what does digital fabrication mean in this context?
The spelling “Benom Juarez” comes from the original Make: headline. Interviews and later profiles refer to the same person as Benito or Beno Juárez; the name variations do not indicate different people.
Juárez connects digital fabrication with social inclusion and community-led innovation. In a 2014 Make: interview, he described Lima as an early “laboratory” for social innovation and linked his interest in inclusion to his background in the Peruvian jungle. The idea is broader than putting a 3D printer in a room: a Fab Lab offers tools and collaborative learning, but its usefulness depends on what people choose to make and how it fits their context.
In a 2014 PuntoEdu PUCP interview, Juárez described a shift from asking where to buy a machine to asking how to make and adapt it locally. He said: “Ya no están pensando en dónde compro una máquina sino en cómo la fabrico y cómo la adapto a mi contexto y a las necesidades que pueda identificar.” In English: “They are no longer thinking about where to buy a machine, but how to make it and adapt it to my context and to the needs I can identify.”

How can digital tools support local production?
A loom designed for artisans
Make: reported Juárez’s account of a low-cost digital loom designed and built by Walter Gonzales in 2011. In the 2014 interview, Juárez said it optimized 60% of the production of a traditional loom. That percentage is an attributed claim from the interview; it did not include an independent evaluation or details of how the improvement was measured.
The example illustrates the approach: digital tools can be adapted to an existing practice rather than replacing it. It does not establish that the loom was adopted widely or that the reported gain applies to other workshops.
Prototyping before industrial production
Agencia Andina’s 2020 account described Peruvian Fab Labs as places to prototype and test products before industrial partners took on scale-up. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the report cited face shields as an example. It also named 3D printers among the tools used in labs. A consumer 3D printer, however, is not by itself equivalent to a Fab Lab’s wider combination of equipment, instruction, collaboration and connections to production partners.

What might a Fab Lab in the Amazon work on?
In an interview published by Arts University Plymouth on 31 October 2024 and updated in January 2025, Juárez described workshops where young people proposed projects tied to local concerns. Examples included a robot to collect river plastic for recycling and efforts to restore soil. These were proposals from participants, not evidence that those specific projects were built or deployed.
Juárez also discussed sensors and platforms for tracking local water and soil quality. A UNIFRANZ profile published around 2025 described his example of wristbands intended to help children identify contaminated water. These are discussed or developing concepts; the cited accounts do not establish their deployment, accuracy or health outcomes.
Materials and nutrient-related ideas
The 2024 Arts University Plymouth interview describes exploration of biomaterials, bioplastics and regenerative materials, alongside concepts involving nutrient printing and a smart mirror under development. The UNIFRANZ profile also reports Juárez’s discussion of bioreactors for customized vitamins or nutrients. These accounts describe experimentation and concepts, not clinically validated treatments or established consumer products.

Floating access and REGEN
Juárez’s Floating Fab Lab concept responds to the difficulty of reaching communities across a landscape where routes can change with the season. He told Arts University Plymouth that a journey passable by land during one period may require boats or swimming when river levels change. The model aims to bring tools and knowledge to more places; the interview does not document a full fleet of established floating labs or compare their operating costs with fixed labs.

CONCYTEC’s 2025 event listing describes REGEN as an effort to combine biodiversity, ancestral knowledge and new technologies toward a regenerative industry. That is an institutional description of the project’s direction, not an evaluation showing long-term ecological or social impact.
How do fixed and floating approaches differ?
The sources describe a geographic access problem and an ambition to distribute tools and knowledge, but do not establish one delivery model as universally better. These are the practical questions to use when assessing either approach:

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can people reach the lab throughout the year? | Seasonal river conditions can alter which routes are passable, according to Juárez’s 2024 interview. |
| Can equipment be maintained and powered? | The cited accounts do not compare maintenance, power or connectivity reliability across fixed and floating models. |
| Is instruction continuous? | Access to equipment is only part of the model; collaborative learning and continuing support also matter. |
| Do communities choose the work? | Juárez’s examples emphasize proposals that arise in workshops and respond to local priorities. |
| Are materials appropriate to the place? | Local context is central to Juárez’s argument for adapting tools and exploring materials. |
| Do benefits last? | The accounts reviewed do not provide comparable long-term evaluations of social or ecological outcomes. |
What obstacles has Juárez identified?
In interviews from 2014, Juárez pointed to education that prepared people to use technology more than develop it, limited innovation activity, weak habits of cooperation, the cost of equipment and training, and slow bureaucracy. His figures describe his assessment at that time—not current measurements.
- Handicrafts and small-scale industry: In the 2014 Make: interview, Juárez said 80% of the economically active population was linked to these sectors. The interview supplied no dataset or method for that estimate.
- Cost: Juárez told Make: in 2014 that acquiring skills, tools and digital-fabrication equipment cost three to eight times more in Latin America than in Europe or the United States. The account gives no measurement method, and the comparison should not be read as current.
- Bureaucracy: Juárez said in the same 2014 interview that bureaucracy took three to six times longer. The source does not specify how that interval was measured.
Geography adds a different challenge to Amazon-focused work: a mobile or distributed model must account for seasonal access while keeping equipment and instruction useful. The 2024 interview explains the route problem, but does not quantify the costs or show how consistently these challenges have been overcome.

| Agencia Andina, 2020 | 25 in Peru; 2,000 globally | Counts reported in the 2020 article. |
| Benito Juárez, quoted by Arts University Plymouth, 2024; page updated January 2025 | More than 50 in Peru; more than 300 in Latin America | Juárez’s attributed figures, with a different geographic scope from Andina’s global count. |
| Juárez, quoted in a UNIFRANZ profile published around 2025 | 30 in 2009 and more than 3,000 “now” | His comparison; “now” refers to the profile’s publication period, not to a verified present-day total. |
The cited accounts do not provide a current, independently reconciled directory count. Their figures are useful as dated snapshots, not as interchangeable estimates.
What is established—and what remains uncertain?
Juárez’s case for digital fabrication is about building local capability: making and adapting tools, learning collaboratively and letting community priorities shape projects. The examples range from an artisan loom and pandemic-era prototyping to proposed recycling and soil-restoration ideas, sensing concepts, material experiments and REGEN’s regenerative-industry framing. They have different evidence statuses; a proposal or development concept is not proof of a working deployment.
The 2024 interview captures that uncertainty in Juárez’s own words: “We do not have all of the answers yet.” The accounts cited here do not establish the current reach of the Amazon-focused work, how durable access and training are, or independently evaluated long-term effects on income, health, education or biodiversity.
