A bespoke tessellated floor is designed around the room, not selected as a ready-made sheet. You combine loose tiles into a repeating geometric field, then resolve a framing border, corner details and perimeter filler around the measured walls, thresholds, steps, drains and curves. The most reliable process is to measure first, draw the repeat at scale, test physical samples, confirm that the material suits the location, and only then cut and install the tiles.
This approach works for heritage restoration, sympathetic additions and contemporary interiors. A historic-looking pattern is not automatically suitable for every tile body or environment, and a modern geometric layout still needs the same discipline of centering, accurate joints and carefully planned edges.

What is a tessellated tile floor?
A tessellated floor is made from individual tiles arranged to create a continuously repeating geometric pattern. Unlike a printed design on one large sheet, the visual field is assembled from separate pieces, so the repeat, joint lines and perimeter cuts all affect the finished appearance.
The Tessellated Tile Factory white paper Designing with Tessellated Tiles: How to Achieve Bespoke & Unique Flooring Finishes (2023) identifies three basic design parts:
#1 Best Overall
- COMPLETE 5-PIECE BRUSH SET FOR EVERY PAINTING TASK — Includes 1 Inch Flat, 1.5 Inch Angle, 2 Inch Flat, 2 Inch Angle Stubby, and 2.5 Inch Angle brush giving you every size professional painters use daily. Get all 5 for less than the price of a single brush from hardware store brands — professional grade performance at a fraction of the cost. Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.
- ZERO BRISTLE LOSS — GUARANTEED BY PRECISION ADHESIVE BONDING — Every bristle is locked in place with precision-set adhesive that keeps them in the brush — not in your paint job. The coated steel ferrule provides structural support while the adhesive bond ensures clean performance on every stroke. Premium SRT synthetic filaments load more paint and release it evenly for a smooth streak-free finish on walls, ceilings, and trim. Works with latex, oil-based paint, primer, sealer, and wood stain.
- INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
- FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Solid wood handles provide all-day comfort and control for both professional contractors and weekend DIY homeowners tackling interior or exterior painting projects.
- TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
- The pattern: the repeating arrangement that creates the main field.
- The framing border: a band that defines the field and gives the room a visual edge.
- The filler: the tiles or adjusted pieces between the border and the wall, floor edge or other fixed boundary.
Those parts make a floor look intentionally composed rather than like a pattern that simply ran out of space. A design can be small and restrained or highly intricate, but it still has to be drawn to the actual room.
Why site-specific design matters
Two rooms with the same nominal dimensions can require different layouts because of door positions, chimney breasts, steps, curved walls, columns, drains and transitions to other finishes. A repeat that looks balanced in a catalogue image may leave a narrow strip at a doorway or an awkward half-motif beside a wall.
Start by recording every fixed boundary:
- Finished wall-to-wall dimensions, including changes in width.
- Door thresholds, openings and the direction of adjoining floors.
- Steps, landings, ramps and changes in level.
- Curves, recesses, columns and built-in furniture that will remain in place.
- Drains, inspection covers and other penetrations in wet or exterior areas.
- Transitions to timber, stone, carpet or another tile system.
Use those measurements to establish the main field repeat. Then test the border width, corner treatment and filler so the composition remains centered and symmetrical. The white paper stresses accurate joints and a centered layout; previewing the repeat at its intended scale is the practical way to identify narrow remnants before any tile is cut.
Draw the repeat before ordering
Prepare a scale drawing that shows the complete room, not just a sample square. Mark the centerlines, the first repeat in each direction, border returns at corners and the exact treatment at thresholds. If the room is irregular, draw each boundary rather than forcing it into a rectangle.
For complex commissions, specialist suppliers may provide a scale drawing and physical samples for approval. Melbourne Heritage Tiles describes a process in which the pattern is drawn to the home’s dimensions and approved before cutting. That sequence gives you an opportunity to move a border, change a filler or adjust the starting point while revisions are still inexpensive.

Choose the design intent: reproduction, interpretation or new geometry
Historically faithful reproduction
A restoration project may require a documented pattern, a period-appropriate palette and a layout that follows surviving evidence. Melbourne Heritage Tiles says it consults pattern catalogues, heritage surveys and its archive, and can work from a clear photograph and surviving tiles. American Restoration Tile describes its historical collection as based on common early-twentieth-century patterns and says it can customize pattern and palette colours.
These are supplier descriptions, not a guarantee that a proposed design is historically correct for your particular building. Check local heritage records, dated photographs, original tile fragments and any conservation requirements before treating a pattern as an exact reproduction.

Sympathetic new design
A sympathetic design borrows the scale, geometry or colour logic of an older floor without claiming to be an exact copy. You might retain a traditional border proportion while simplifying the field, or use a documented motif in colours selected for a newer interior. This option is useful when the evidence is incomplete or when a strict replica would not fit the room’s dimensions.
Contemporary geometric treatment
Contemporary tessellation can use the same principles—repeat, border and filler—with quieter colours, larger modules or a deliberately graphic contrast. Pattern resources show layout families such as interlocked, kaleidoscope, modified hopscotch, Versailles and modular pinwheel. These are examples of multi-tile layouts, not a statement that every family is a heritage tessellation or suitable for every material.
Can a floor be designed from a photograph?
Yes, a clear photograph can be a starting reference, especially when combined with surviving tiles or measured fragments. A photograph may reveal motif, colour relationships and border details, but perspective, lighting and ageing can distort proportions and colour. Ask the designer to separate what is documented from what must be inferred.
For a defensible reproduction, supply:
- High-resolution images taken square to the floor or wall, with a ruler or known-size object in frame.
- Close-ups of field, border, corner and threshold details.
- Any loose original tiles, including their back marks and thickness.
- Room measurements and photographs showing the complete perimeter.
- Information about the building’s date, alterations and heritage status.
The resulting drawing should identify assumptions and show how the motif will turn corners and meet openings. Approve a physical colour sample as well as the drawing; a screen image cannot reproduce the final surface reliably.
Build the composition from field, border and filler
1. Set the field repeat
Choose the smallest complete module that can repeat without changing its geometry. Place its centerline on the room’s principal axis where possible. Check how many full repeats fit between opposing borders and decide whether equalized adjustments are needed at both sides.
2. Design the border and corners
The border should frame the field consistently along each wall. Corner pieces may need a dedicated turn, a mitred arrangement or a change in motif so the pattern does not appear to stop abruptly. Draw the corners at the same scale as the field; a border that works along a straight run can fail when it turns.
3. Resolve the filler
Filler tiles close the gap between the border and an irregular wall or edge. Plan their width and orientation rather than leaving them as random slivers. Where a narrow remnant cannot be avoided, balance it with a corresponding adjustment on the opposite side or revise the repeat and border dimensions.

4. Check transitions
At a doorway, align the most legible feature—usually a border, centerline or complete motif—with the threshold and adjoining finish. Confirm finished floor heights before ordering so the tessellated build-up does not create an unintended lip.
Colour: the same pattern can become a different floor
Colour should follow the pattern decision, not substitute for it. The 2023 white paper notes that the same geometry can look markedly different in pastel, restrained two- or three-colour palettes, or monochrome.
- Monochrome: emphasizes relief, joint rhythm and shape; useful where the pattern should remain architectural rather than decorative.
- Two colours: makes the repeat easy to read and can support a strong border-to-field contrast.
- Three colours: adds hierarchy, but requires a clear role for each colour so the motif does not become visually muddy.
- Pastels: soften a traditional geometry and can reduce the visual weight of a small room.
Request full-size samples under the room’s actual lighting. Compare the field, border and filler together; a colour that looks balanced in a single tile can dominate when repeated across a floor.

Melbourne Heritage Tiles states that it offers more than 35 heritage colours. That is the supplier’s stated range as of its current service page, not an industry-wide standard or a guarantee that every colour is available in every tile body.
Material selection: match the tile to the location
Pattern and colour do not determine whether a floor will perform in a bathroom, verandah, walkway or fireplace setting. Select the tile body and installation system for the actual water exposure, traffic, sunlight, substrate and local requirements.
| Option | What the cited supplier material says | Questions to verify before specification |
|---|---|---|
| Fully vitrified porcelain | The Tessellated Tile Factory white paper (2023) defines fully vitrified porcelain as absorbing less than 0.5% of its weight in water. It also describes porcelain as strong and resistant to scratch, impact, acid, alkali and water. | Obtain the current technical sheet, intended-use rating, slip data, thickness, shade variation and installation requirements for the exact product. |
| Handmade cement tile | Tesselle describes a coloured surface made from cement, pigment and marble dust, with custom designs and colours. It warns that saturated colours may fade in direct sunlight and recommends shaded outdoor locations for those colours. | Confirm curing, sealing, cleaning, exterior exposure limits, colour variation and substrate requirements with the maker and installer. |
The porcelain performance statements above are claims in one manufacturer’s white paper, not independent comparative test results. The available material does not establish universal slip ratings, maintenance intervals, lifecycle costs or local building-code compliance. Ask for product-specific evidence that matches the site.
Indoor rooms
Bathrooms and entryways need a tile and jointing system rated for their moisture and traffic conditions. Confirm how the proposed surface handles standing water, cleaning products and the substrate movement expected in the room.

Verandahs and walkways
Exterior exposure adds rain, sunlight, temperature change and possible freeze-thaw stress, depending on geography. A cement tile colour that is acceptable in a shaded courtyard may not be suitable in direct sun. Verify exterior ratings and the manufacturer’s placement limitations rather than inferring suitability from appearance.
Fireplace surrounds
Tiles near a fireplace can face heat, soot and cleaning chemicals. Establish the required clearance and heat performance for the specific installation; a decorative pattern alone does not establish fire safety.
Custom cement tile: colour and lead-time considerations
Custom cement tile can provide control over motif and palette. Tesselle says it can develop a customer’s own pattern or colour for a minimal surcharge and lists a 12–14 week delivery period for customized tiles. Both statements are supplier-specific and can change, so obtain a dated written quotation confirming production time, shipping, approval stages and acceptable handmade variation.
Its warning about saturated colours fading in direct sun is particularly relevant to verandahs and courtyards. If the design depends on a strong colour, decide whether the location can remain shaded or whether a different pigment or tile body is needed.

Complex tessellated floors are assembled piece by piece. The Tessellated Tile Factory white paper states: “Laying tessellated tiles is an artisan skill and should be considered as a specialised installation that requires time and patience.”
- Survey and measure: record boundaries, levels, openings, drainage and the adjoining finishes.
- Develop the design: draw the repeat, border, corners and filler at scale; identify any assumptions from photographs or incomplete evidence.
- Approve samples: review physical field, border and grout-joint samples in the actual light.
- Confirm the quote and scope: separate tile supply, substrate preparation, cutting, laying, grouting, sealing, protection and cleanup.
- Prepare the base: ensure the substrate, screed and moisture conditions meet the tile maker’s requirements.
- Set out the centerlines: snap or mark the approved axes and dry-lay enough of the field to confirm the starting point.
- Lay and match: place the individual tiles, maintaining the approved repeat and border returns; cut at the perimeter and around fixed features.
- Inspect before final fixing: check motif orientation, colour distribution, joint consistency and threshold alignment while pieces can still be moved.
- Complete joints and protection: use the specified grout, sealers and curing or protection period for the selected system.
The white paper describes one-piece-at-a-time installation over a sand-and-cement screed and gives a 1 mm minimum joint as its guidance. Treat 1 mm as that document’s recommendation, not a universal requirement; joint widths depend on the tile, edge tolerance, substrate and installation system.

For a complex layout, a written scope should make the design and installation responsibilities visible. Melbourne Heritage Tiles describes a workflow of site visit and measurement, design and quote with a scale drawing and physical samples, followed by base preparation, cutting, matching and hand laying. Its service is based in Victoria, Australia; other regions may use different trades, standards and lead times.

A full repeat is squeezed into an unsuitable room
Symptom: the design leaves a very narrow strip at one wall or threshold. Fix: redraw the starting point, adjust border width symmetrically or choose a repeat that fits the measured field.
The border does not turn cleanly
Symptom: a straight border meets the corner with a broken motif or inconsistent gap. Fix: design corner returns as part of the pattern, not as an afterthought.
A photograph is treated as exact evidence
Symptom: the proposed reproduction copies apparent colours or proportions that were altered by perspective, ageing or lighting. Fix: compare the image with measured fragments, archival information and physical samples, and label inferred details in the approval drawing.
Material is selected for appearance alone
Symptom: a decorative cement colour is specified in unshaded sun, or a tile is used in a wet area without current performance data. Fix: obtain the product technical sheet and confirm exposure, traffic, slip, moisture and substrate requirements before ordering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsJoint guidance is copied from another product
Symptom: the installer is asked to use a generic joint width despite different tile tolerances. Fix: follow the exact tile maker’s and installation-system instructions; the 1 mm figure in the Tessellated Tile Factory paper is not universal.
Handmade variation is mistaken for a defect
Symptom: slight colour or dimensional differences are discovered only after laying. Fix: review representative samples, agree acceptable variation in writing and dry-lay the material so distribution is intentional.
A decision framework for your project
- Identify the intent: documented restoration, sympathetic interpretation or contemporary geometry.
- Classify the environment: interior, wet room, shaded exterior, direct-sun exterior, walkway or fireplace setting.
- Measure the constraints: field dimensions, thresholds, curves, drains, steps and finished heights.
- Select a material route: compare porcelain and cement against current technical data, not colour alone.
- Develop the composition: field repeat first, then border, corner treatment and filler.
- Approve at full scale: use a measured drawing and physical samples under site lighting.
- Contract the work clearly: define manufacture, cutting, installation, joints, sealing, protection and programme.
Questions to ask the tile maker and installer
- Is the proposed tile rated for this exact indoor or outdoor exposure?
- What are the current water absorption, slip, chemical-resistance and use-class figures?
- What joint width and adhesive or screed system does the product require?
- How will handmade colour and dimensional variation be distributed?
- Can you supply a scale drawing with the room’s measured boundaries and thresholds?
- Who cuts and matches pieces around curves, drains and doorways?
- What is included in the written price, and which items are provisional?
- How long are design approval, manufacture, delivery and installation expected to take?
- What care, sealing and protection instructions apply to this product?
The practical standard for a successful bespoke floor
A unique tessellated finish is not created by choosing an unusual motif alone. It comes from coordinating the repeat, border, filler, palette, material and site set-out so that every edge looks intentional and the tile performs in its environment. Use historical evidence when restoration demands it, adapt openly when the evidence is incomplete, and treat a contemporary pattern with the same respect for measurement and joint accuracy.
Before committing to manufacture, require the measured drawing, physical samples, current technical data and a written installation scope. That preparation is what turns a catalogue idea—or a photograph of an old floor—into a finish that belongs to the room.
