For a true outline rather than a shaded sketch, start with MakeLineArt. If you are making a stencil, choose Rapid Resizer; if you want an artistic AI effect, use Fotor. The distinction matters: a line drawing preserves contours, while a sketch may add tonal shading, hatching, or hand-drawn texture.
A photo can become either a clean line drawing or a shaded sketch, and choosing the right tool depends on which result you actually need. For a coloring page, stencil, cutting pattern, or paint-transfer outline, use a direct edge or threshold tool. For an expressive portrait with pencil texture or ink-like shading, use a sketch or AI effect instead.

1. MakeLineArt: best direct, privacy-forward line-art converter
Best for: turning a photo into a straightforward black-and-white line drawing without detouring through a general-purpose editor.

MakeLineArt is the closest match when “line drawing” means contours and interior edges, not a pencil-filter portrait. Its dedicated converter lets you control how much edge detail remains, adjust line weight, erase unwanted marks, and download a high-resolution PNG. The provider says it processes images locally in the browser, requires no sign-up, and has no watermark or usage cap.
How to use it
- Upload your photo.
- Lower intensity for a simpler outline, or raise it to retain more detail. Adjust line weight until the lines will reproduce at the size you need.
- Use the eraser to remove distracting marks, select a transparent or solid background PNG, and download.
Why painters and crafters may prefer it
Its controls map directly to the decisions that matter when transferring an image to canvas or preparing a simple pattern: how much information to keep, how bold the lines should be, and which accidental background edges to remove.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Watch for: the service describes its method as edge detection. A busy background, JPEG artifacts, blur, or weak subject/background contrast can create extra lines. Plan to inspect and clean the output rather than expecting every photo to convert perfectly.
2. Rapid Resizer Free Picture Stencil Maker: best for adjustable stencils and craft patterns
Best for: a simplified printable pattern for painting, woodworking, stained glass, or similar hands-on projects.
Rapid Resizer’s Free Picture Stencil Maker is explicitly designed to trace a photo or picture into a stencil, pattern, or line drawing. Compared with a purely stylized effect, it gives you more pattern-oriented controls: Edges, Thin, Threshold, Adaptive, and Color. That makes it a strong choice when the goal is not merely a nice-looking image on screen, but a usable reference to print and transfer.

How to use it
- Select an image from your device.
- Try the edge, thinning, threshold, adaptive, and color settings. Change one setting at a time so you can see which control removes noise or preserves the subject’s important shapes.
- Download or print the resulting one-page pattern.
Useful approach for a paint-transfer pattern
Start with a photo that has a distinct subject and an uncluttered background. Use threshold or edge-oriented settings to reduce small textures such as hair, leaves, brick, or fabric weave. Keep landmark contours—eyes, major folds, silhouette, and large shadow boundaries—rather than trying to retain every photographic detail.
Watch for: the stencil maker is labeled free, but Rapid Resizer marks its multi-page Print to Any Size feature as requiring a purchase. The one-page conversion/print route is the free claim here; do not assume every large-format printing workflow is free.
3. Fotor Photo to Line Drawing: best for a stylized AI line-art look
Best for: portraits and reference photos where an artistic result matters more than strict technical-outline control.
Fotor provides a dedicated photo-to-line-drawing workflow and presents a broader range of sketch effects. Upload an image, choose a line-art effect from its sketch filter choices, generate the result, then download it as JPG or PNG. The provider advertises the line-art download as free and without a watermark.
How to use it
- Upload the image you want to transform.
- Choose a specific line-art effect from the sketch filter menu and generate the result.
- Download the result as JPG or PNG.
Choose the effect deliberately
Fotor’s pencil, ink, and other sketch styles can be useful for inspiration or a finished decorative image, but they are not the same thing as sparse contours. If you need an outline for tracing, choose a line-art effect first. A shaded pencil or ink treatment may look attractive while still being awkward to transfer, color, cut, or use as a stencil.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
Watch for: free-plan access and export terms are controlled by the service and can change. The “free” and “no watermark” description reflects the provider’s published claim as of the date above, not a permanent guarantee. Fotor is better treated as a styling option than as a precision outline tool.
4. LunaPic: best simple no-signup sketch-effect option
Best for: a fast browser-based pencil-sketch route when you do not need a dedicated line-art engine.
LunaPic describes itself as a completely free online photo editor with no sign-up, login, or installation required. Its effects include Sketch, and its guidance for turning a photo into a pencil drawing points to the Pencil Sketch tool. It is a sensible lightweight option for trying an artistic interpretation of a photo without creating an account.
How to use it
- Open LunaPic in a browser and upload or open your photo.
- Choose the Pencil Sketch or Sketch effect.
- Save the edited image when you are happy with the result.
Watch for: LunaPic’s documented route starts from a pencil-sketch effect. That is different from a dedicated contour extractor, so regard it as an artistic quick option—not a promise of clean, sparse outlines or editable vectors.

Photopea is a free browser-based editor rather than a specialist photo-to-line-drawing generator. That extra complexity is useful when the source needs preparation: you can use its adjustments and filters before converting. Its documentation also includes Image > Vectorize Bitmap, which creates editable vector layers and can be exported as SVG or PDF. Photopea says opened files are processed on the user’s device rather than uploaded.
How to use it
- Open the photo in Photopea and use adjustments or filters to prepare it as needed.
- For a vector result, choose Image > Vectorize Bitmap, review the preview and settings, then confirm the conversion.
- Export as SVG or PDF when an editable/vector-compatible file is appropriate for your next step.
When the extra work is worthwhile
Use Photopea when a one-click result is close but not usable: perhaps the background needs simplifying, contrast needs changing, or the final project benefits from editable paths. It is also the strongest option here when the deliverable matters as much as the preview—for example, a file to revise, scale, or take into another design workflow.
Watch for: Photopea is not a one-click line-drawing service. It offers broader control and vectorization, but asks more of you than MakeLineArt, Rapid Resizer, Fotor, or LunaPic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before you upload: get a cleaner drawing from the start
A better source photo makes every route easier. MakeLineArt’s guidance specifically recommends well-lit, high-contrast images and describes line extraction in terms of changes in brightness, color, and texture. In practice, choose a source where the subject separates clearly from its surroundings.
- Use a sharp, well-lit image. Blur and compression noise can become accidental edges.
- Prefer contrast over visual busyness. A dark subject against a lighter, plain background is easier to reduce to meaningful contours than a subject surrounded by foliage, patterns, or clutter.
- Decide the final use before converting. A portrait sketch can retain texture; a coloring page, stencil, cutting pattern, or paint-transfer outline usually needs fewer, clearer shapes.
- Inspect before printing, cutting, or painting. Look closely for stray lines, closed gaps, and missing edges at the size you will actually use.
Privacy and image rights
Only make privacy assumptions where the provider states them. MakeLineArt says processing happens locally in the browser, and Photopea says opened files are processed on your device rather than uploaded. This research did not establish equivalent processing practices for Fotor, LunaPic, or Rapid Resizer, so do not assume that all five have the same handling of uploaded images.

Which one should you use?
Start with MakeLineArt when you want the most direct path to adjustable line art. Choose Rapid Resizer when the end product is a stencil or craft pattern. Use Fotor for an AI-stylized line-art or sketch effect, LunaPic for a quick no-signup pencil-sketch alternative, and Photopea when manual refinement or vector conversion is worth the extra effort.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a photo into a clean outline instead of a shaded sketch?
Use a direct line-art or stencil tool and begin with lower detail or intensity. Keep the silhouette and essential interior contours, then remove stray background marks. MakeLineArt and Rapid Resizer are better starting points than a shaded sketch effect when the result needs to be traced, cut, or used as a coloring-page-style outline.
Which tool is best for making a stencil from a photo?
Rapid Resizer is the most purpose-built option in this list for stencil and craft-pattern work because it offers edge, thinning, threshold, adaptive, and color controls. Its multi-page “Print to Any Size” feature is marked as requiring a purchase, so check the print option before planning a large pattern.
Can I convert the result to SVG?
Photopea is the option here with a documented route to editable vector layers: use Image > Vectorize Bitmap, then export SVG or PDF if that suits your workflow. It is a general editor, so expect more hands-on work than with a dedicated converter.
Are these tools private enough for personal photos?
MakeLineArt and Photopea publish on-device/local-processing claims. This research did not establish the same practice for Fotor, LunaPic, or Rapid Resizer, so review each service’s current privacy information before uploading a sensitive image.

The Bottom Line
For a paintable or traceable outline, favor direct edge and threshold tools over sketch filters: MakeLineArt for clean editable contours, or Rapid Resizer for a stencil-style pattern. Save the artistic sketch tools for projects where expressive texture is part of the look.
