For precise edits to painting reference photos, Photoshop with Firefly is the strongest all-round choice. Canva is easier for social posts and class promotions; ChatGPT suits conversational experiments; Photoroom is built for product-style images; and Topaz Photo specializes in improving blurry or noisy photos. There is no universal winner: a tool that makes a polished promo graphic may be a poor fit for preserving the exact edges, colors, and lighting you need in a painting reference.
This guide compares tools by what a painter might actually use them for: cleaning up a reference, exploring a background or composition, photographing finished work, and making a portfolio or event graphic. AI edits can change important visual facts. Keep the original, inspect every result, and do not treat generated detail as reliable reference for anatomy, perspective, color, or materials.

Photoshop is the best fit when an edit must be localized and adjustable: remove a distraction, extend a canvas, refine a selection, or combine an AI-generated change with manual retouching. Its central advantage is the surrounding editor—layers, masks, selections, and conventional corrections—rather than a promise that every generated result will be accurate. That matters when a small change needs careful inspection or reversal.

For painting from life or a photograph, distinguish cosmetic cleanup from changing the subject. Removing a telephone wire may be harmless for a personal study; altering a hand, reflection, garment fold, or light source can change the information you are trying to observe. Preserve an untouched original and label an edited reference so you know what was altered.
Adobe’s Firefly plans page listed, in the August 2026 research snapshot, Standard at US$9.99/month with 2,000 generative credits, Pro at US$19.99/month with 4,000, Pro Plus at US$49.99/month with 10,000, and Premium at US$199.99/month with 50,000 credits. These are Firefly plan figures, not a universal price for Photoshop or every Creative Cloud plan; plans and promotions can change. Check the official Firefly plan page before buying. For studio announcements and social graphics: Canva
Canva is a practical choice when the finished deliverable is a flyer, class announcement, exhibition post, or simple promotional image. Templates and layout tools let a beginner combine an image with typography without learning a full compositing workflow. It is not the best option for fine retouching, precise color-managed adjustments, or intricate masks.

For edits expressed as instructions: ChatGPT
ChatGPT image editing is useful when the request is easier to describe than to execute with selections—for example, asking for a few background or scene variations. It is a prompt-first workflow, not a substitute for a project with editable masks, layers, and conventional retouching controls. Across iterations, details the user meant to preserve can drift, so check faces, hands, edges, lettering, and composition against the original.
The official plan page describes image generation access as limited on Free and expanded on paid plans, with usage limits. It does not support describing the service as universally unlimited. See ChatGPT plans and check the specific plan’s data and commercial terms for the intended use.

For photographing and presenting finished work: Photoroom
Photoroom is designed around product imagery: background removal and replacement, generated backgrounds, shadows, fill, expansion, and related listing tools. A painter can use that kind of workflow to create a consistent, clean presentation of an artwork or object, but should inspect the result carefully. A generated shadow, canvas edge, frame, signature, or texture can misrepresent the actual work.

Topaz Photo is a specialist option for denoising, sharpening, deblurring, and enlargement—not for designing a poster or building a complex composite. It may help when a reference or documentation photo is technically compromised, but enhancement can invent or exaggerate texture. Midjourney belongs in a separate category. It can help explore mood, stylization, or broad compositional ideas, but it should not be confused with a tool for precise correction of an existing photograph. Exact text, product geometry, identity, and faithful preservation of a reference are poor assumptions for a generator. Use it for inspiration rather than as an authoritative record of what a subject looks like.

What matters when choosing an AI editor for painting
- Preservation: Can it change the requested area without silently changing the subject, expression, proportions, or surrounding details?
- Control and reversibility: Can you restrict the edit, compare it with the original, and undo or refine it? Layers and masks matter for repeated professional work.
- Reference fidelity: Does the result preserve perspective, light direction, reflections, and color relationships? A plausible-looking image can still be a misleading reference.
- Output: Check resolution, file type, transparency, and export restrictions against your actual need. Do not assume a free tier offers full-resolution or watermark-free exports.
- Consistency: If you need several views of one painting or a series of branded posts, see whether the product can reproduce the same treatment reliably.
- Cost: Compare what consumes AI credits, whether failed attempts count, and whether the editor remains useful after credits run out. Credit counts across products are not directly comparable.
- Privacy: Before uploading client work, unpublished art, or identifiable people, read the applicable data terms. Do not infer retention or training practices from a general product description.
- Commercial use: Confirm the terms for both the tool and the source material. Vendor claims do not automatically resolve rights in uploaded images, recognizable likenesses, trademarks, or client assets.
Common AI-editing problems to check before using an image
- Hands, faces, or body proportions change during a background edit.
- Hair and other fine edges acquire halos or look cut out.
- Logos, signatures, labels, or small text are altered or turned into nonsense.
- Shadows and reflections no longer agree with the lighting or object.
- Product or artwork dimensions subtly change.
- Repeated generations drift farther from the original.
- Upscaling invents texture that was never captured.
For documentary, evidentiary, or news photographs, removing or adding content may compromise authenticity. For artwork documentation, keep an unaltered capture. For a painting reference, retain both the source and edited versions and note which areas were changed.
Practical recommendation
Choose Photoshop if you need careful selections and edits you can continue refining; Canva if the goal is a fast promotional layout; ChatGPT if you want to explore edits through conversation; Photoroom for consistent object presentation; and Topaz Photo for image-quality problems. Consider Luminar Neo for a simpler desktop editor, Affinity Photo for manual editing outside Adobe’s subscription model, and Midjourney for ideation rather than faithful photo correction.
