Choose by the problem your room presents: Dynasty or Marquee when hiding and stain resistance are the priority, Reserve when an independently tested high score matters, Aura for a premium self-priming finish, and Diamond 350 when documented washability and lower VOC are more important than a current Consumer Reports score. The right sheen, surface preparation and cure time affect real-world durability as much as the label.

What makes an interior wall paint durable?
Scrub and stain resistance
Durability is not simply hardness. A durable wall coating should resist the paint film wearing away when you clean it, release common marks without polishing to a different sheen, and keep its color after repeated contact with hands, furniture and cleaning tools. Sherwin-Williams technical guidance defines scrubbability as “Wearing away or removal of the paint film when scrubbed with a brush, sponge, or cloth.” That definition explains why a paint can look tough yet lose sheen or pigment under aggressive cleaning.
Stain resistance concerns how readily substances such as food, colored drinks or dirt can be removed. Scrub resistance concerns whether the film survives the removal process. Look for both claims rather than assuming one guarantees the other.
Hide and number of coats
Hide is the ability to obscure the previous color and surface variation. High hide can reduce labor, but one-coat performance depends on the old color, porosity, patching, application thickness and the new color’s pigments. A white over a deep red, a porous repair and a heavily textured wall can all require additional coats even when the can advertises one-coat coverage.
Sheen and appearance
Higher sheens generally tolerate washing better because they form a less porous surface, but they also reflect more light and reveal dents, sanding marks and uneven texture. Flat finishes disguise flaws but are the least forgiving of repeated washing. Eggshell and satin are the usual compromise for living areas; semi-gloss is appropriate where frequent washing outweighs glare.
VOC, odor and ventilation
VOC numbers describe a measured formulation characteristic, not a promise that a freshly painted room will have no odor. Colorants, ventilation, temperature and humidity affect perceived smell and drying. PPG’s cited Diamond 350 documentation lists less than 50 g/L VOC, and Benjamin Moore lists Aura as low VOC. Verify the current technical data sheet because formulas can change.
Price, access and color
Prices and retailer access vary by region, container size, finish and tint base. The cited material does not establish current prices for any model, so compare like-for-like gallons at local retailers rather than relying on an old online listing. Confirm that the exact color, sheen and base are in stock; a product’s performance can differ between finishes or formulas.
Behr Dynasty: highest cited laboratory score
Behr Dynasty is the strongest choice in the cited Consumer Reports comparison when you want an independently published score focused on hiding and staining. The January 2026 table gives it an overall 96, with 5/5 for hiding and 5/5 for staining, and marks it CR Recommended.

Those numbers make Dynasty a logical candidate for hallways, stairwells and children’s rooms where both coverage and mark removal matter. The score is for the listed model, not every Behr product or every finish. Confirm the can’s finish and current formula at purchase, especially if you are matching an older wall.
Best use
- High-traffic walls where hiding and stain performance are the first filters.
- Repaints over a contrasting color when the label and application conditions support the expected hide.
- Projects where a current Consumer Reports comparison is useful as one data point.
Limitations
- The cited material does not state Dynasty’s current coverage allowance, one-coat guarantee or VOC figure.
- Laboratory scores do not predict exactly how a particular patched, textured or poorly prepared wall will perform.
- Local stock and finish selection should be confirmed before planning the job.
Behr Marquee: practical one-coat and cleaning focus
Marquee fits buyers who want a clearly stated coverage target and a finish intended for repeated cleaning. Behr lists coverage of up to 400 square feet per gallon and offers a one-coat hide guarantee for colors in its specified collection. The same product information describes the coating as scrubbable, easy to clean, stain resistant and suitable for high-traffic areas. Consumer Reports’ January 2026 table gives Marquee an overall 95 and marks it CR Recommended.
How to interpret the 400-square-foot figure
“Up to 400 square feet per gallon” is a maximum under suitable conditions, not a promise for every room. Rough or porous surfaces, heavy texture, dark-to-light color changes, overspray, waste in the tray and an overly absorbent roller all reduce practical coverage. Measure wall area, then follow the label’s spread-rate and application instructions.
When the one-coat guarantee helps
The guarantee applies only to colors in Behr’s specified collection. It does not mean any color will cover any substrate in one pass. Spot-prime repairs, use the recommended roller nap, maintain a wet edge and apply enough material to reach the stated spread rate. If the old color still telegraphs through after the coat dries, apply a second coat rather than scrubbing or overworking wet paint.
Cleaning expectations
Let the film cure thoroughly before washing. Start with clean water and a soft sponge or microfiber cloth. Use gentle pressure and change the water when it becomes dirty. Abrasive powders, rough pads and aggressive solvents can damage even a scrubbable coating.
Benjamin Moore Aura: premium hide and scuff resistance
Aura is the premium-oriented option for readers who value high hide, self-priming behavior and a scuff-resistant, scrubbable finish. The manufacturer lists suitability for high-traffic areas, high hide, low VOC and self-priming. In the January 2026 Consumer Reports table, Aura’s overall score is 71.
The difference between that score and Aura’s feature list is not necessarily a contradiction. Consumer Reports’ score reflects its own test protocol and weighting; the manufacturer’s statements describe specified product characteristics. Use the score to compare that test, and use the technical claims to decide whether the product’s stated features match your project.

Best use
- Rooms where scuffs are common and a premium finish is acceptable.
- Repainting jobs where high hide and self-priming can simplify the system.
- Projects where low-VOC labeling is an important selection factor, subject to current data-sheet confirmation.
Watch-outs
Self-priming does not eliminate every need for separate primer. Bare drywall, water stains, smoke damage, glossy surfaces and severe color changes may need targeted priming. Follow the current label for substrate preparation, recoat timing and cure.
PPG Diamond 350 Interior: documented washability and lower VOC
PPG Diamond 350 Interior is a practical comparison when you want technical claims about washability, scrubbability and stain resistance together with a lower stated VOC level. The cited PPG documentation lists less than 50 g/L VOC, excellent hide, good washability and scrubbability, and good stain resistance for interior sheens.
The available PPG review is from 2016. Treat those statements as historical documentation and verify the current technical data sheet before making a formulation-specific decision. Product names can remain while resin systems, sheen ranges or performance wording change.
Where it fits
Diamond 350 is worth considering for family rooms, corridors and utility spaces where routine washing matters but you do not have a current Consumer Reports score for the exact model. Compare the present-day label with the wall’s condition, expected sheen and cleaning routine.
Application caution
Because the cited material does not provide a current spread rate or guaranteed coat count, plan the quantity from the current label rather than from a generic gallon estimate. Buy enough paint from the same batch when color consistency is important.

Valspar Reserve: strong current comparison score
Valspar Reserve receives a 93 overall score in Consumer Reports’ January 2026 table and is marked CR Recommended. That places it behind Dynasty and Marquee in the cited ranking but ahead of Aura and Valspar Signature. The score is model-specific, so confirm the exact finish and current formula before assuming that every Reserve sheen performs identically.
Reserve is a sensible shortlist choice when you want a high current test result and can obtain the correct product locally. The cited material does not provide a product-specific VOC figure, spread rate or manufacturer scrub description for Reserve; use the can and technical data sheet for those details.

Why Valspar Signature appears lower in the same table
Valspar Signature scores 65 in the January 2026 Consumer Reports table. It is useful as a reminder that a brand name does not establish equal performance across product lines. The cited table does not mark Signature CR Recommended. If washing and stain removal are central requirements, compare the exact model rather than assuming a lower-tier or different line will behave like Reserve.
Choose by room and cleaning load
Hallways and stairwells
These areas receive hand contact, bag rubs and shoe-level dirt. Start with Dynasty, Marquee or Reserve if the cited test results are your primary filter. Choose eggshell or satin for a balance of cleanability and moderate reflection; use semi-gloss on trim or on walls that are washed very frequently.

Prioritize stain release and a surface that can tolerate gentle wiping. Marquee’s documented easy-clean and stain-resistant positioning, Dynasty’s 5/5 staining result, and Aura’s stated scuff resistance are relevant differentiators. Use washable art materials and clean marks after the paint has cured rather than immediately after application.
Kitchens, mudrooms and laundry areas
Grease, moisture and repeated wiping favor satin or semi-gloss. Diamond 350’s documented washability and stain resistance, or a high-scoring model such as Dynasty or Marquee, can fit this load. Improve ventilation and allow full cure before exposing the wall to routine cleaning.
Living rooms and bedrooms
Eggshell or satin usually gives enough cleanability without highlighting every drywall imperfection. Aura can suit a premium finish, while Reserve, Marquee and Dynasty offer strong comparison results. Flat paint is appropriate when hiding surface flaws matters more than washing frequency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pick the sheen before you pick the color
Use flat where glare control and flaw concealment dominate. Use eggshell for a low-reflective finish that tolerates light cleaning. Use satin for more frequent wiping and a slightly higher sheen. Use semi-gloss when maximum washability is worth visible reflection and increased attention to wall preparation.

One-coat coverage: a realistic decision process
- Identify the existing surface. Note whether the wall is previously painted, bare drywall, patched, glossy, stained or textured.
- Compare old and new colors. Large hue changes and deep colors commonly require more material or a tinted primer.
- Read the exact label. Record the stated spread rate, permitted one-coat colors, recoat window and cure guidance for the chosen finish.
- Calculate a conservative quantity. Divide measured paintable area by the label’s spread rate, then allow for porosity, texture, waste and a second coat where needed.
- Test a representative patch. Paint a section that includes a repair and the old color, let it dry fully, and inspect in normal room light.
- Decide before painting the whole room. If the patch shows flashing, bleed-through or uneven sheen, correct the substrate or plan another coat.
Application steps that protect durability
- Clean the wall. Remove dust, grease and loose material. Let the surface dry completely.
- Repair and sand. Fill holes and seams, sand smooth and remove sanding dust. Shiny areas may need deglossing or a suitable bonding primer.
- Prime problem areas. Spot-prime bare drywall, stains, repairs and severe color changes when the product label calls for it.
- Mask and protect. Cover floors and hardware; remove switch plates so paint does not bridge their edges.
- Mix and condition the paint as directed. Do not add unapproved thinner or water. Box multiple cans together when the label permits and color matching is critical.
- Cut in, then roll a consistent section. Maintain a wet edge, use the recommended nap, and avoid repeatedly brushing or rolling paint that has begun to set.
- Respect recoat and cure times. A surface can feel dry while the film is still developing strength. Follow the product’s temperature and humidity guidance.
- Inspect in multiple lights. Check daylight and artificial light for misses, lap marks, flashing or uneven sheen before returning furniture.
How to wash painted walls without damaging them
Sherwin-Williams’ technical guidance notes that scrub resistance develops after thorough curing and that abrasive cleaners can damage the paint film. The same guidance explains why gloss and semi-gloss are generally easier to clean than flat or satin.
- Wait for the full cure period on the product label, not merely the dry-to-touch time.
- Remove loose dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Use clean water and a soft sponge or cloth first.
- Work in small sections with light pressure, rinsing the cloth frequently.
- If water is insufficient, use only a mild cleaner approved by the label, testing it in an inconspicuous area.
- Dry the area gently and stop if color, sheen or pigment transfers to the cloth.
Common failure modes and fixes
Paint pulls off or becomes shiny during cleaning
The wall may have been scrubbed before full cure, cleaned with an abrasive, or coated over a contaminated or glossy surface. Stop aggressive cleaning, let the area dry, and repair by cleaning, sanding or priming as appropriate before touching up.
Stains bleed through
Ordinary wall paint may not isolate water, smoke or tannin stains. Clean the source, let it dry, apply a compatible stain-blocking primer and repaint after the primer cures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOne coat looks uneven
Uneven porosity, insufficient wet film, roller pressure or a strong color transition can cause flashing. Allow the coat to dry, correct repairs or prime porous spots, then apply a uniform second coat.
Touch-ups do not disappear
Touch-up mismatch can come from different sheen, batch, application tool or wall aging. Use the same product, color base, sheen and application method whenever possible; for visible areas, repaint the entire wall from corner to corner.
Wall shows every defect after painting
Higher sheen increases reflected light. Sand ridges, skim-coat repairs, improve side lighting during inspection and select eggshell or satin instead of semi-gloss when the wall’s condition makes glare unacceptable.
Final buying checklist
- Choose the exact product line and sheen, not just the manufacturer.
- Match the choice to the cleaning load: Dynasty, Marquee or Reserve for strong cited comparison results; Aura for stated hide and scuff features; Diamond 350 for documented washability and the cited lower VOC.
- Confirm current formula, color base, spread rate, recoat time and cure time on the label or technical data sheet.
- Verify local stock and current price; the cited material does not establish a reliable current price for these products.
- Buy a sample or test patch when changing color, sheen or substrate.
- Plan for preparation and cure time; these determine whether a premium coating delivers its advertised durability.
Bottom line
For the strongest evidence in the cited January 2026 comparison, start with Behr Dynasty, Behr Marquee or Valspar Reserve. Select Marquee when its specified one-coat color collection and up-to-400-square-foot-per-gallon coverage fit the job; select Dynasty for the table’s top hiding and staining results; and select Reserve for its high CR Recommended score. Aura and PPG Diamond 350 remain credible alternatives when their stated hide, scuff, washability or VOC characteristics match your priorities. Whichever paint you choose, use the right sheen, prepare the wall and wait for full cure before washing.
