The best art knife blade is the one shaped for your cut and made for your exact handle. A fine straight blade is a practical choice for detailed trimming; curved and chisel profiles support different cutting motions, while scoring, scraper and saw blades serve more specialized jobs. Before buying replacements, match the blade family to the knife model—OLFA KB4 blades and X-ACTO numbered blades are separate systems, and their compatibility should not be assumed.
What are art knife blades called?
They are commonly described as art knife blades, hobby knife blades or craft knife blades. Product names often include a model or number, such as OLFA KB4 or X-ACTO #11. Use the handle’s brand and model when searching: a generic category name alone does not establish that a replacement will fit.

Choose blade geometry for the operation
Blade profiles are designed for different operations, not ranked from best to worst. The following functions are those OLFA gives for blades compatible with its AK-4 Professional Art Knife; they are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance comparisons.

For paper, model-making or other craft work, start with the cut itself: detailed trimming calls for a precision profile, while scoring, scraping or sawing calls for a blade designed for that operation. Confirm that the material and task are supported by the selected blade’s product information rather than assuming every profile suits every material.

Check handle compatibility before ordering
Blade shape does not tell you whether a blade will attach to your knife. OLFA lists separate KB and KB4 product families for different art knife models: its general KB carbon tool-steel precision blade is identified for the AK-1, while the specialty KB4 series is associated with the AK-4. X-ACTO, meanwhile, lists its own numbered blade models: #11, #2, Z-Series #11, Z-Series #2, #10, #16, #17, #18 and #28.
- Read the knife’s exact model name or number, not just its brand.
- Check the replacement blade’s stated compatible handle or product family.
- Do not infer that blades from different brands—or similarly numbered blades—interchange unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms it.
X-ACTO describes its range as cutting surfaces from paper to wood and plastic, but the selected blade’s fit and intended task still need to be checked against its product information and the handle instructions. Product catalogs establish listed functions and compatibility; they do not establish which brand is sharper, longer-lasting or more accurate in a head-to-head test.

Change blades according to the specific knife
There is no universal replacement procedure for all art knives. On the OLFA AK-4, the manufacturer describes loosening the collar and paying attention to the direction of the blade slot when changing blades. Follow the instructions for the exact handle and blade system in use; do not apply one model’s mechanism to another.

OLFA’s cutter guidance recommends a cutting mat, a stable flat surface, keeping the supporting hand out of the blade path, avoiding excess force, and storing the cutter safely after use. It also advises checking for a worn blade or damaged handle. A sharp, suitable blade helps avoid forcing a cut; OLFA warns, “Using a dull blade requires extra force, which is a cause of injury.”

OLFA’s advice to expose only one segment and retract the blade afterward applies to snap-off utility cutters—not the fixed blades used in pen-style art knives. For a ruler-guided cut with a utility cutter, OLFA recommends a thick ruler and using its spine. For an art knife, keep the cut controlled, keep fingers clear, and follow that tool’s own handling and storage instructions.
