There is no objective, universal ranking of the best aviation paintings. A strong shortlist depends on what you want to see: a historically important work, an aircraft rendered in detail, the people and places around flight, or a more imaginative interpretation of aviation. The selections below focus on works documented by museum collections and exhibitions, alongside practical ways to find art that suits your interests.
What makes an aviation painting worth looking at?
Aviation art is not limited to portraits of aircraft in flight. The RAF Museum describes its holdings as covering RAF operations, equipment, culture, people and broader themes of flight, from ballooning and early air races to wartime, the jet age, the Cold War and contemporary work. Its collection includes paintings and watercolours as well as prints, posters, drawings and sculpture. The National Air and Space Museum takes an equally broad view across more than two centuries and media ranging from painting and photography to textiles and sculpture.
To compare works, consider the period and subject, the artist’s approach, and the point of view. A painting might focus on an aircraft, a cockpit, aircrew, an airfield, a landscape or the human experience of flight. Some works record events with a documentary sensibility; others interpret flight through expressive or imaginative forms. The National Air and Space Museum’s Carolyn Russo put the subject’s wider appeal this way: “The desire to fly—from soaring with birds to exploring distant planets—has long piqued human imagination.” Russo’s article, “Flight and the Arts” (January 14, 2026), discusses the museum’s art collection.
Historically significant aviation paintings to seek out
These are notable choices for their documented historical context and variety of subject, not a ranked list. The examples below are identified in the RAF Museum’s collection overview.

- Richard Carline, Baghdad (1919): an early postwar work represented in the museum’s collection overview.
- Paul Nash, Halifax Attack (1940): a Second World War subject and a collection highlight.
- Dame Laura Knight, Stirling Cockpit (1943): a cockpit-focused view that brings the crew’s setting into the picture.
The museum’s collection also includes works by Sidney Carline, Eric Kennington, John Nash, Graham Sutherland, Eric Ravilious, Thomas Hennell, Anthony Gross, Leslie Cole and Evelyn Dunbar, among others. That breadth matters: aviation art includes civilian and cultural themes, early flight, ballooning, air races and posters, not only combat imagery. See the RAF Museum’s fine and graphic art collection for its overview and collection examples.
Wartime aviation art beyond the RAF collection
American naval aviation was also the subject of a substantial wartime art project. The National Gallery of Art records that its exhibition Paintings of Naval Aviation by American Artists ran from November 21 to December 12, 1943, and presented 101 paintings and drawings commissioned to illustrate the wartime activities of naval aviation. The exhibition was organized with the Navy Department, and its explanatory captions were written by the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics. The National Gallery of Art exhibition record documents the project and its scope.

Where aviation art fits in the wider history of art
Aviation art can be illustrative, realist, documentary or abstract; the subject does not dictate a single style. The National Air and Space Museum’s collection spans drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and textiles, and includes artists as varied as Norman Rockwell, Man Ray, Alma Thomas, Richard Estes, Francisco Goya, Annie Leibovitz and William Wegman. Its January 2026 article reports more than 8,000 artworks reflecting aviation and spaceflight history, spanning more than 200 years. Separately, the museum’s exhibition page gives an approximate figure of 7,000 works; those are figures from different museum pages, not a single reconciled total.
How to find aviation art to display
Look for original works through a specialist listing
The Guild of Aviation Artists provides a buy-art section with searchable listings. Its filters include organization or gallery, medium, artist, picture title, aircraft or description, price range, year and sold status. Use those fields to narrow the search, then check the individual listing for current availability and transaction details.

Compare prints and posters carefully
Museum collections document aviation prints and posters as part of the wider field, but that does not establish the quality or value of any particular reproduction for sale. Before buying a print, check the details the seller actually provides:
- The aircraft, person, event or period depicted.
- Dimensions and medium, and whether framing is included.
- Edition details, if stated.
- Seller information, current availability and transaction terms.
A museum-held original, an artist’s original offered for sale and a reproduction are different kinds of purchase. The RAF Museum’s collection overview also links to its shop, but current aviation-art stock is not established by the collection page; check the shop listing for what is available.

Choose a work by the experience you want
For historical context, start with named museum works and their periods. For a more personal connection, look for a cockpit, crew or airfield scene rather than an aircraft alone. If you want art for a wall, decide whether you prefer an original or a reproduction, then compare the listing’s actual dimensions, medium and framing information. The “best” aviation painting is ultimately the one whose subject, style and story matter to you—not a universal winner.
