A C2C blanket does not need a border, but an edging can frame its stepped sides and give them a more finished look. For a quiet, practical finish, choose single crochet; add repeated rounds for a wider frame, try block stitch for a patterned edge, or use crab stitch for a compact, twisted finish. The key is to follow one C2C-specific setup and corner method consistently.
Which border suits your C2C blanket?
Choose by how much attention you want the edge to draw, whether you want color changes, and how much structure the raw sides need. These are options rather than a ranking: the best fit depends on the blanket and the look you want.

Why a C2C blanket often needs a setup round
Corner-to-corner sides have a stepped structure: the diagonal rows leave block edges and spaces rather than a smooth, conventional edge. A foundation round can provide a more consistent base for decorative rounds. It is not a single standardized formula, however. Hooked by Robin’s C2C blanket pattern places single crochet stitches and chain spaces along the sides and includes a chain-space corner; other C2C tutorials specify their own placement.
If the pattern you used includes edging instructions, start there. Avoid combining stitch counts or corner directions from different tutorials unless you have checked how those instructions fit your blanket’s edge.

How to add a border neatly
- Choose a C2C-specific edging method. Use your blanket pattern’s instructions if it provides them, or select one tutorial and follow its setup and corner directions throughout.
- Work the setup round evenly around the stepped sides. Place stitches and chain spaces as specified by that method; do not assume every block or edge space takes the same number of stitches.
- Shape each corner as instructed. Border patterns use corner-specific stitches or chain spaces. Keep the treatment consistent and do not substitute a corner count from another pattern.
- Add the finish you chose. Continue with single crochet for a simple edge, repeat solid rounds for a wider frame, follow the C2C block-stitch sequence for a patterned border, or work crab stitch into the established edge in the reverse direction.
- Fasten off and weave in the tails. A yarn or darning needle is useful for weaving in the ends.
Make the hook and yarn work for your blanket
Use yarn compatible with the blanket and its pattern guidance, whether you want a matching edge or a contrast color. Choose a hook that works with that yarn and your tension. Published examples vary: Hooked by Robin’s project specifies a 4 mm hook for its particular yarn and blanket, while Crochet It Creations’ crab-stitch tutorial names a K/6.5 mm hook and advises using the hook needed for the project. Neither size is a general requirement, and yarn quantity depends on the blanket and border you make.
Is a border required?
No. A border is an optional finishing choice, not a requirement for a C2C blanket. If you like the stepped edge as it is, you can leave it unbordered. If you want a frame or a more even base for a decorative finish, choose a C2C-specific method and follow its corner instructions.

What crab stitch means in a border pattern
Crab stitch and reverse single crochet are two names for the same technique. For right-handed crocheters, it is worked in the opposite direction from usual—from left to right—by inserting the hook into the stitch to the right. Make & Do Crew’s beginner C2C blanket pattern and Crochet It Creations’ video guide show crab stitch as a C2C blanket edging; it is often used after a regular border round has established the edge.
