The right button machine depends on the finished size and shape you need, how many buttons you expect to make, and whether you want to cut artwork for one size or several. For a flexible starting point, compare a manual 2.25-inch press with other sizes and formats—but it is not a universal best choice. Which button size should you choose?

A 2.25-inch manual press is a useful comparison point because it is a widely offered size associated by the seller with general event and wearable use. Manual or electric: how much output do you need?
Tecre publishes the following production estimates for its machines. The FAQ does not state a publication year, and the rates depend on operator speed; they are manufacturer estimates, not independently measured results.

For occasional batches or a hands-on craft workflow, a manual press may be sufficient. For repeated, larger runs, compare an electric model’s production claims with your actual workflow and confirm what die sets it accepts. Tecre says its electric machine can use interchangeable die sets, while each manual machine is set up for one size. Output figures alone do not establish reliability, labor savings, or total cost over time.
How should you choose an artwork cutter?
Cutting is part of the production workflow, so include the cutter when comparing a machine’s overall fit.

- Fixed-size punch: A graphic punch is made for a particular button size. American Button Machines says fixed-size punches are easier to operate and preferred for high-volume cutting.
If you regularly switch button sizes, the rotary approach may be more flexible. If you make repeated batches in one size, a fixed punch may simplify cutting. Do not assume they will. American Button Machines states that Badge-a-Minit parts are slightly larger than industry-standard parts and that the systems do not fit one another. Which manufacturers and formats are worth comparing?
American Button Machines lists round presses for 1-inch, 1.25-inch, 1.5-inch, 2.25-inch, 3-inch, and 3.5-inch buttons, as well as square and rectangular formats.
