For most artists, Copic Sketch is the best all-purpose Copic marker for drawing. It has the broadest color range in Copic’s lineup and combines a flexible Super Brush nib with a Medium Broad nib. Choose Ciao for a more accessible entry point, or Classic if you prefer a fine nib and work in graphic or architectural illustration. These recommendations reflect Copic’s published specifications and intended uses, not independent comparative testing.

What are the differences between Sketch, Ciao, and Classic?
Sketch: broadest range and flexible brush strokes
Sketch is Copic’s standard model for illustration, comics, design, and fine art. Its Super Brush and Medium Broad nibs offer two distinct approaches: the brush nib suits varied line widths and strokes, while the broad nib is useful for laying down color. It has 358 colors, the largest range among these three models.

Ciao: a lower-commitment way to start
Copic describes Ciao as an entry-level, more economical option. It has 180 colors and the same nib types as Sketch, but less ink per marker. It can suit a beginner or student who wants brush and broad nibs without starting with Sketch’s full range.
Classic: fine detail and broad coverage
Classic pairs Broad and Fine nibs rather than a brush and broad nib. Copic positions it for graphic and architectural illustration. Consider it when a fine marker tip is more useful to your line work than a flexible brush nib.

What paper should you use, and how do you manage bleed-through?
Copic’s alcohol-based dye ink soaks into paper and bleeds through to some extent. As Copic puts it, “Since our ink is a dye ink, it soaks into the paper you use, hence the ink will always bleed through the paper to some extent.” Put scrap paper beneath your drawing, avoid excessive pressure, and test the paper before starting a finished piece.
Copic describes its Premium Bond Paper and Custom Paper as basically bleed-proof. It says Thick Marker Paper and Soft Watercolor Paper bleed through more readily but make blending and gradations easier. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions; do not assume a third-party paper will behave the same way without testing it.

Can Copic markers be refilled, and are the nibs replaceable?
Copic says Sketch, Ciao, and Classic can be refilled repeatedly with Copic Ink, and that marker nibs can be replaced. Match refill ink to the marker’s exact color code, and check nib compatibility before replacing one: Classic Fine nibs are not compatible with Ciao.
Copic recommends changing nibs when you notice wear, staining, or a change in performance. Its support guidance also recommends storing markers horizontally in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Copic Ink is flammable, so keep it away from heat, sparks, and open flames.
Will Copic marker drawings fade?
Copic cautions that dye colors may fade under strong UV exposure, depending on the color and the amount of light. Keep finished work away from direct sunlight; for displayed pieces, consider UV-protective framing. Copic’s guidance does not establish a fixed lifespan or guarantee archival permanence.
