The best Windows drawing app depends on what you mean by drawing. Krita is the strongest default for free digital painting; Clip Studio Paint is the specialist choice for comics, manga, and webtoons; Photoshop suits professional image editing and compositing; and Rebelle is designed for realistic watercolor and oil simulation.
Sketchbook, MediBang Paint, GIMP, Inkscape, Affinity, and Microsoft Paint can all be good choices—but they solve different problems. Use the guide below to match the software to your art style, tablet, file formats, budget, and workflow.
Quick comparison
| App | Best for | Price model | Windows notes | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Krita | Digital painting and 2D art | Free and open source | Windows desktop version | Dense interface for beginners |
| Clip Studio Paint | Comics, manga, webtoons, illustration | Trial, subscription, or perpetual-license options | Windows and macOS | Complicated editions and plans |
| Adobe Photoshop | Professional editing, compositing, and drawing | Subscription | Windows desktop, web, and mobile access varies by plan | Expensive for painting alone |
| Rebelle | Realistic watercolor, oil, and acrylic | Trial and paid editions | Windows demos include 64-bit and 32-bit downloads | Specialized and hardware-demanding |
| Sketchbook | Simple sketching | Desktop licensing varies by edition and storefront | Windows desktop version | Limited production tools |
| MediBang Paint | Free manga and comic drawing | Free app with optional services | Windows 64-bit and 32-bit downloads | Less powerful than Clip Studio Paint |
| GIMP | Free image editing and compositing | Free and open source | Current page lists Windows 10.0.20348.0 or newer for its Microsoft Store package | Less painting-focused than Krita |
| Inkscape | Vector art, logos, icons, and diagrams | Free and open source | Windows desktop version | Not a painterly raster app |
| Affinity | Raster, vector, and layout work | Current model requires storefront verification | Product direction has changed | Older pricing and product names may be outdated |
| Microsoft Paint | Annotations and casual drawing | Usually included with Windows | Features vary by Windows release | Not a serious layered art application |
Which Windows drawing app should you choose?
- Want free digital painting? Choose Krita.
- Want comics, manga, or webtoons? Choose Clip Studio Paint.
- Need Photoshop files and professional compositing? Choose Photoshop.
- Want realistic watercolor or oil? Choose Rebelle.
- Want the least distracting sketchbook? Choose Sketchbook.
- Want free manga tools? Try MediBang Paint.
- Want free image editing? Choose GIMP.
- Want logos or scalable artwork? Choose Inkscape.
- Want raster, vector, and layout tools together? Investigate the current Affinity product.
- Need a quick annotation tool already in Windows? Use Paint.
1. Krita: best free digital-painting app
Krita is the best starting point for most Windows users who want serious digital painting without paying for a license. It is free, open source, and built primarily around illustration, painting, and 2D animation rather than photo correction.
#1 Best Overall
- PLEASE NOTE: The XPPen Artist 15.6 Pro needs to connect with a computer to use. You need to use it with your Computer or Laptop. It is NOT a standalone drawing tablet
- Outstanding Visuals: The immersive 15.6 inch large screen with 1920x1080 p full HD resolution presents your creation in the depth of detail, provides you with clarity to see every detail of your work
- 8 customized express keys: The Artist 15.6 Pro monitor features 8 fully customizable shortcut keys and puts more customization options at your fingertips to suit you preferred work style, allowing you to capture and express your ideas easier and faster for optimized workflow

- Advanced Pen Performance: With up to 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity, the PA2 Battery-free Stylus provides you with increased accuracy and enhanced performance to create the finest sketches and lines
Its brush engine, customizable brushes, layers, masks, blending modes, stabilizers, assistants, reference tools, and animation features make it suitable for practice, concept art, finished illustration, and animation experiments. The Krita documentation is useful when the interface becomes unfamiliar.
Best for: Digital painting, concept art, illustration, brush practice, and small animation projects.
Trade-offs: The interface can feel dense, and canvas size, brush complexity, and available memory affect performance. Vector and page-layout work are secondary. Krita is not automatically easier than Photoshop, and Photoshop files may not import with every brush, effect, mask, text object, or adjustment intact.
Free status: Free and open source. It is not merely a trial or restricted free tier.
2. Clip Studio Paint: best for comics, manga, and webtoons
Clip Studio Paint is the strongest specialist choice for comic artists and illustrators who need panels, speech balloons, perspective tools, vector line art, screen tones, 3D pose references, and production-oriented page workflows.
The official lineup separates PRO and EX. PRO is generally the sensible edition for ordinary illustration and many comic projects; EX adds higher-end production capabilities such as multi-page documents and advanced animation functions. The company’s support documentation says version 5.0 was released on March 11, 2026: version information.
Windows users can choose among subscription plans and perpetual-license options, but the pricing structure is easy to misunderstand. A low displayed monthly price may apply to a particular plan or device configuration rather than the normal desktop PRO or EX experience. Check the official lineup for the current edition, billing period, and update terms before buying.
Best for: Manga, comics, webtoons, line art, illustration, and animation.

- PLEASE NOTE:XPPen Artist13.3 Pro drawing tablet Need to connect with computer, you need to use it with your computer or laptop, the 3 in 1 cable is included
- Drawing Tablet with Screen: Tilt Function- XPPen Artist 13.3 Pro supports up to 60 degrees of tilt function, so now you don't need to adjust the brush direction in the software again and again. Your creative world is now as powerful as it is colorful
- Drawing Pad: One is enough- The sleek Red Dial on the display is expertly designed with creators in mind, its strategic placement allows for natural drawing postures. With just one wheel, you can effortlessly zoom in and out, adjust brush sizes, and flip the canvas—all tailored to suit the habits of everyday artists. The 8 customizable shortcut keys allow you to personalize your setup, streamlining your workflow and enhancing creative efficiency
- Universal Compatibility & Software Support:supports Windows 7 (or later), Mac OS X 10.10 (or later), Chrome OS 88 (or later), and Linux systems. Fully compatible with major creative software including Photoshop, Illustrator, SAI, and Blender 3D. Register your device to access additional programs like ArtRage 5 and openCanvas for expanded creative possibilities.
Trade-offs: The interface takes time to learn, and PRO, EX, perpetual licenses, subscriptions, and update arrangements are not interchangeable. Do not pay for EX if PRO covers your work.
3. Adobe Photoshop: best for professional editing and mixed workflows
Photoshop is the right choice when drawing is part of a broader professional workflow involving photo editing, retouching, compositing, client PSD files, design work, or other Adobe applications.
It offers mature layers, masks, selections, adjustment tools, filters, retouching, compositing, and strong PSD interoperability. Current Adobe plans also promote tools such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and Remove Tool. Features, generative credits, and plan contents can change, so check the current product page.
Adobe’s US page has listed standalone Photoshop at US$22.99 per month for an annual, billed-monthly plan and US$263.88 per year for annual prepaid access. Those figures are geography-, date-, plan-, and promotion-dependent—not universal prices.
Best for: Professional illustration plus photo editing, compositing, agencies, and Adobe-centered teams.
Trade-offs: Photoshop uses subscription access, and many of its tools are unnecessary if you only want to paint. It is powerful but not necessarily the most natural-feeling brush application. It is a poor value for someone seeking a free painting app or specifically avoiding subscriptions.
4. Rebelle: best traditional-media simulation
Rebelle is designed for artists who want digital watercolor, oil, acrylic, and other wet or dry media to behave more like physical materials. The official product page currently presents Rebelle 8 and Rebelle 8 Pro, with features including pigment mixing, oil thickness, watercolor diffusion, and NanoPixel technology.

- Compatible with only VEIKK Studio 16 Pen Display
- 16384 Levels of pen pressure sensitivity,290 PPS report rate
- It is a passive pen, no need to charge
- Package contain:one P09 pen
Trade-offs: Rebelle is more specialized than Krita or Photoshop. Realistic simulation can demand more hardware, and the app is not a replacement for a photo editor, page-layout application, or comic-production suite. A free demo is available, while the exact paid price and edition should be checked on the current purchase flow.
5. Sketchbook: best simple sketching experience
Sketchbook is a good choice when opening the app and drawing immediately matters more than having every advanced production feature. Its streamlined interface includes customizable pencils, markers, airbrushes, paint and smear tools, layers, blending modes, rulers, curved rulers, ellipse tools, French curves, predictive stroke, and symmetry.
The official desktop page also highlights stylus pressure and tilt support. That makes Sketchbook particularly approachable for sketching, practice, storyboards, and uncomplicated illustration.

Trade-offs: It is less suited to advanced compositing, animation, comic-page production, and professional color-managed delivery. Confirm whether the edition you are buying is Sketchbook or Sketchbook Pro and check current Windows licensing in the relevant storefront.
6. MediBang Paint: best free manga-oriented option
MediBang Paint is a lightweight option for beginners and comic artists. Its Windows page provides separate 64-bit and 32-bit downloads and promotes comic tutorials, materials, fonts, cloud features, and group projects.
Best for: Free manga practice, simple comics, collaborative projects, and users who want a gentler start than a full professional suite.

- All-new Canvas Glass 2.0: HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) drawing tablet for pc features a fully laminated 13.3-inch screen and brand new anti-sparkle canvas glass 2.0 for reduced glare and improved accuracy. It is perfect for designers, artists, and illustrators to unleash their creativity.

- Rigorous Color Calibration: HUION Kamvas 13 (Gen 3) drawing monitor includes a factory calibration report for added assurance of color consistency.
7. GIMP: best free Photoshop-style alternative
GIMP is a powerful free, open-source image editor that can also draw. It is especially useful for scanned artwork, retouching, selections, masks, filters, paths, compositing, and preparing assets.
The current official download page lists GIMP 3.2.4 and says its Microsoft Store package supports Windows 10.0.20348.0 or newer. Check the live page for current installers and architecture options.
Best for: Free image editing, compositing, scanned art, and users who need more than a basic paint program.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Trade-offs: GIMP’s core identity is image editing, not painting. Krita is usually the more natural choice for brushwork, illustration, and animation. PSD support is useful but does not guarantee perfect preservation of layer effects, text, masks, vector objects, or other Photoshop-specific features.
8. Inkscape: best for vector illustration
Inkscape is included because “drawing” often means creating logos, icons, diagrams, typography, stickers, or scalable illustrations. It uses vector paths, nodes, shapes, fills, strokes, and SVG workflows, so artwork can be resized without becoming pixelated.
Best for: Logos, icons, diagrams, typography, SVG assets, and print-friendly scalable artwork.
Trade-offs: Inkscape is not a natural substitute for a textured raster painting app. Its pressure-sensitive drawing experience and raster tools are limited compared with Krita, and some advanced print workflows may require another application.

Your laptop/desktop needs to have HDMI and USB-A ports available for the connection, or you need an extra converter(such as Thunderbolt to HDMI, depends on what ports that your laptop/desktop has) for the connection
Affinity is worth considering if you want a professional middle ground combining raster editing, vector design, typography, and layout rather than a painting-first application. It can be attractive to Photoshop users who also need Designer- or Publisher-style capabilities.
Trade-offs: The current Windows edition, feature divisions, pricing, and licensing model should be verified on the live product and purchase pages. Do not assume older “one-time purchase,” “free,” or “no subscription” claims still apply. Compatibility with Photoshop files should be tested with the specific layer, text, effect, and vector features your workflow uses.
10. Microsoft Paint: best for basic Windows drawing
Microsoft Paint is useful for quick annotations, simple shapes, screenshots, casual doodles, and children’s drawing. It is fast to launch and requires no specialist setup.
It is not a substitute for a layered digital-art application. Brush control, masking, compositing, color management, file formats, and production tools are limited compared with the other apps here. Features can vary by Windows release and by Microsoft account or AI rollout.
Free versus premium: what the labels really mean
| Category | Examples | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free and open source | Krita, GIMP, Inkscape | Download from the official project site and keep the native file format. |
| Free with optional services | MediBang Paint | Cloud storage, materials, accounts, advertisements, and export limits. |
| Trial software | Photoshop, Rebelle, Clip Studio Paint | Trial length, automatic conversion, and the plan selected afterward. |
| Subscription | Photoshop; some Clip Studio plans | Monthly price, annual commitment, billing period, cancellation terms, and credits. |
| Perpetual or desktop license | Some Clip Studio and Sketchbook editions | Edition, supported devices, major-version upgrades, and update passes. |
A free download is not always free software, and a one-time license does not necessarily include every future major update. Prices must be checked for your country, currency, edition, billing period, and purchase date.
Drawing tablets and Windows setup
A drawing app cannot compensate for a poor or incorrectly configured pen setup. A pressure-sensitive tablet or pen display, current manufacturer driver, and compatible Windows input mode matter as much as the software.
Before you install
- Confirm that your tablet is supported by the manufacturer’s current Windows driver.
- Restart Windows after installing or updating the driver.
- Check pressure and tilt in the app’s brush settings.
- If pressure, cursor position, or double cursors are wrong, test Windows Ink and WinTab settings. Conflicts between them are a common cause of tablet problems.
- Calibrate a pen display and map it to the correct monitor.
- Reduce canvas size, brush spacing, or stabilizer complexity if large brushes lag.
- Save in the app’s native format before exporting to PSD, PNG, JPEG, or another interchange format.
A mouse can operate every app in this guide, but a pressure-sensitive stylus is far better for line control, opacity, and natural brushwork. Large canvases and realistic simulations also benefit from adequate RAM, a supported GPU, fast storage, and current graphics drivers.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
File formats and workflow choices
- Native layered files: Preserve the most editing information and should be your master files.
- PSD: Useful for Photoshop collaboration, but imports and exports are not guaranteed to preserve brushes, adjustment layers, masks, vector layers, text, effects, or animation timelines exactly.
- PNG: Preserves transparency and is excellent for web artwork, but it does not preserve editable layers.
- JPEG: Convenient for sharing, but lossy and unsuitable as a master file.
- TIFF: Useful for high-quality raster delivery and some print workflows.
- SVG: Designed for vector artwork, not layered raster painting.
- OpenRaster: A useful open format for some layered raster workflows, although application support and feature preservation vary.
- GIF or video: Animation export depends on the app and may not preserve the original timeline or editable layers.
For print, check RGB versus CMYK support, ICC profiles, soft proofing, export resolution, PDF/X requirements, and whether your printer accepts the application’s PDF or TIFF output. A program that produces attractive screen art is not automatically a complete print-production tool.
How to choose without counting features
Do not select a winner by adding up every checkbox. Score each application against the work you actually do:
- Digital painting: Brush quality, blending, stabilizers, layers, and color control.
- Comics: Panels, perspective, balloons, screen tones, 3D references, multi-page documents, and export.
- Professional production: PSD handling, color management, non-destructive editing, reliability, and collaboration.
- Beginner sketching: Interface clarity, setup burden, tutorials, and affordable access.
- Vector work: Nodes, strokes, Boolean operations, text, and SVG/PDF export.
- Value: Compare total first-year and three-year cost, not just the advertised monthly figure.
Final verdict
Krita is the best default recommendation for most Windows users who want free digital painting. Choose Clip Studio Paint instead when comic, manga, webtoon, or illustration-production tools are central. Choose Photoshop when drawing sits inside a professional Adobe editing and compositing workflow, and Rebelle when the behavior of watercolor, oil, or acrylic matters most.
Sketchbook is the easiest focused sketchbook, MediBang Paint is a useful free manga option, GIMP is the stronger free image editor, Inkscape is the correct tool for vector artwork, Affinity belongs on the shortlist for mixed creative work, and Paint remains appropriate for quick basic marks—not serious digital painting.
