For a neutral driftwood look, start with a semi-transparent gray or gray-brown deck stain, then test it on your own prepared wood before committing. Good named starting points include Cabot Driftwood Gray, Sherwin-Williams DB 2107 Driftwood, and PPG Proluxe Driftwood ST-528. They are references, not guaranteed matches: each manufacturer uses a different product and color system, and the same color name can look different on different wood.
What a neutral driftwood deck color looks like
Natural driftwood usually sits between weathered gray, muted taupe and a soft brown. It is not a flat “concrete gray.” The most convincing finishes retain some warmth from the wood while reducing strong red, orange or yellow undertones. On a deck, that effect normally comes from a gray or gray-brown stain with enough transparency for the grain and board variation to remain visible.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no industry-standard driftwood stain color. “Driftwood” is a marketing name used within individual product lines, not a universal formula. Cabot calls one color Driftwood Gray; Sherwin-Williams identifies DB 2107 Driftwood; and PPG Proluxe lists Driftwood ST-528. Those labels establish a useful starting family, but they do not promise the same hue, opacity or finished appearance.
A nearby option is BEHR Drift Gray ST-137, listed in the DECKplus semi-transparent waterproofing-stain color range. It is a gray alternative rather than an exact “Driftwood” label, so compare it by undertone and finished appearance instead of by name.

Driftwood stain colors compared
| Color option | Manufacturer description | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Cabot Driftwood Gray | Gray-family, semi-transparent stain | Closest of these examples to an explicitly gray-named driftwood color; verify on your deck’s species and preparation. |
| Sherwin-Williams DB 2107 Driftwood | Exterior semi-transparent stain | Uses the “Driftwood” name; the manufacturer directs shoppers to in-store color cards because screen color can be inaccurate. |
| PPG Proluxe Driftwood ST-528 | Semi-transparent stain color for decks and fences | Another named driftwood option; the manufacturer cautions that digital color can differ from the applied surface. |
| BEHR Drift Gray ST-137 | Color in the DECKplus semi-transparent waterproofing-stain range | An adjacent gray choice, not an exact driftwood-labeled color; judge its warmth and transparency on the actual boards. |
Use four comparison questions rather than assuming one label is “best.” First, does the sample lean cool gray, balanced gray or warm gray-brown? Second, how much grain remains visible at the selected opacity? Third, how does the color react with your wood species, age and previous coating? Fourth, is the product compatible with the surface and preparation your deck requires?
Why semi-transparent is usually the right starting point
Semi-transparent stain is a practical starting opacity when you want a visibly stained deck rather than a painted film. Cabot and PPG classify the cited driftwood colors as semi-transparent, and BEHR describes its semi-transparent finish as enhancing wood patterns. The amount of grain that remains visible will still vary with the product, number of coats, board condition and wood species.
A semi-transparent product cannot erase every existing color difference. New and weathered boards may absorb differently, and repaired areas can remain visible. If you need a completely uniform gray surface, a more opaque coating may be more predictable, but that is a different visual goal from natural-looking driftwood and should be evaluated as a separate product choice.
How to choose between cool gray and gray-brown
Choose a cooler gray when
- Your deck boards have strong orange or red warmth that you want to visually quiet.
- The surrounding siding, stone or metal already uses cool gray or blue-gray tones.
- You want a more weathered, coastal impression and are comfortable with a less brown result.
Choose a warmer gray-brown when
- The deck is surrounded by beige, cream, tan or warm wood finishes.
- You want driftwood character without making the outdoor space look blue or stark.
- The existing boards are very pale and need a little brown balance to avoid a washed-out appearance.
These are visual guidelines, not guarantees. A stain’s undertone can shift when it penetrates porous wood, and the same sample can look warmer in direct sun and cooler in shade. Compare colors beside the house, railings and furniture that will remain after the project.

Test the color before buying enough for the deck
Color cards and online swatches are screening tools only. Cabot notes that wood species affects the final color and recommends a hidden-area test. Sherwin-Williams warns that monitor colors may not represent the stain accurately and points customers to in-store color cards. PPG likewise says digital representations can vary from the painted or stained surface.
- Prepare a representative test area. Use a discreet section of the deck or a sample board made from the same wood. Match the planned cleaning, stripping and sanding so the test represents the real substrate.
- Apply the candidate products exactly as labeled. Keep the number of coats, spread rate and drying time consistent. A thin single coat is not a fair comparison with a two-coat system.
- Label every sample. Record the brand, product line, color name or code, coat count and application date. This prevents confusion when several gray samples dry close together.
- Inspect in outdoor light. View the samples in morning, midday and late-day light, and check both sun and shade. Wet stain is not the finished color.
- Check from normal viewing distance. Stand where you usually sit or enter the yard. A color that looks attractive inches away can read too dark or too blue across an entire deck.
- Look for uneven absorption. Note lap marks, shiny patches, raised grain or boards that remain noticeably different. Those clues may indicate preparation or compatibility issues rather than a bad color.
- Wait through the product’s stated dry and cure period. Do not select a color solely from the first wet appearance or recoat before the label allows it.
Keep the winning sample until the job is complete. It gives you a reference for touch-ups and helps distinguish normal board variation from an application problem.
Prepare the deck for a neutral, even result
Preparation controls color as much as the pigment does. Dirt, gray surface fibers, mildew, old sealer and glossy residue can block penetration or create dark and light patches. Inspect the deck for loose boards, exposed fasteners, splinters and areas that stay damp. Repair structural or safety issues before choosing a finish.
Identify the existing coating. A previously sealed or painted deck may require removal or a product specifically designed to bond to the remaining finish. Do not assume that a cleaner will remove an intact film. Conversely, aggressive stripping can open the wood and change how much stain it absorbs.

Follow the selected manufacturer’s preparation sequence. The BEHR DECKplus instructions, for example, call for its stripper where existing coatings need removal, followed by its cleaner after stripping. Where stripping is not needed, the cleaner may be used alone for cleaning and brightening. Those directions apply to that product; they are not universal instructions for Cabot, Sherwin-Williams, PPG Proluxe or any other stain.
After cleaning, allow the boards to dry as directed and remove residue. A test patch is especially important after stripping because newly exposed wood can absorb more stain than an adjacent board that retained an older finish. If the sample shows dramatic variation, improve preparation before changing color.
Application conditions that affect the result
Read the label for the exact stain you selected. Product technologies differ in allowable moisture, temperature, coat count, recoat window and tools. Plan for a weather window long enough for the stated drying and curing times, and avoid trapping dew or rain beneath a fresh coat.
BEHR DECKplus requirements and figures
For BEHR DECKplus specifically, the manufacturer recommends properly prepared, new-to-moderately weathered, unsealed exterior wood, including decks. Its instructions require dry wood, an application temperature of 40–90°F (4.5–32°C), and no rain expected within 24 hours. The page also directs users to test color and penetration in a small hidden area.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
The same product guidance calls for two thin coats. It lists first-coat coverage of 250–300 square feet and second-coat coverage of 500–600 square feet. These are manufacturer guidance for that product, not universal coverage rates; rough, porous or heavily weathered boards can use more material.
BEHR states up to three years on decks and up to five years on fences and siding. Those are manufacturer performance claims, not independent comparative tests or a promise that every deck will last that long. Exposure, traffic, drainage, preparation and maintenance all influence service life. The DECKplus family page lists 60 custom colors, so a store may be able to adjust the direction of a gray choice, but any custom color still needs a real-wood sample.

A practical staining sequence
- Confirm the product and substrate. Verify that the label allows your wood type, deck condition and existing-finish situation.
- Complete repairs and preparation. Clean, strip when the product requires it, rinse or neutralize as directed, and let the boards reach the required dryness.
- Protect adjacent surfaces. Mask siding, doors and masonry, and plan a route that avoids stepping on wet boards.
- Stir thoroughly without creating foam. Keep pigment suspended during the work; follow the label if mechanical mixing is restricted.
- Work in manageable sections. Maintain a wet edge and stop at natural breaks such as board ends or rail-post lines to reduce lap marks.
- Follow the stated spread rate. Over-application can leave a shiny or sticky film, while under-application can look pale and provide less protection.
- Allow the first coat to dry for the labeled interval. Do not shorten the interval because the surface feels dry on top.
- Apply the second coat only if the product specifies it. Keep the coat thin and even; more stain is not automatically more durable.
- Keep traffic and furniture off the surface until permitted. Early foot traffic can create dark paths, imprints and uneven sheen.
Common problems and what they usually mean
| Symptom | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| The deck looks much darker than the sample. | Excess product, extra coats, wetter wood or a more porous section absorbed more stain. | Stop adding material. Let it dry fully, then consult the product’s correction instructions before attempting removal or recoating. |
| The gray appears blue or cold. | The chosen color has a cool undertone, or surrounding warm light is changing the comparison. | Use the retained sample to compare a warmer gray-brown option; do not try to “warm” the wet coat by adding an unapproved product. |
| Boards show strong stripes or lap marks. | Sections dried before adjacent areas were blended, or absorption varied across boards. | Do not keep brushing a partially dried section. Allow the surface to cure and follow the label’s procedure for correcting overlap marks. |
| Some boards remain shiny or tacky. | Too much stain, insufficient drying, cool or damp conditions, or a coating that blocked penetration. | Protect the area from traffic and moisture, verify conditions, and use the manufacturer’s cleanup or correction guidance. |
| Gray and brown boards look inconsistent. | Different wood age, repairs, previous finish or preparation levels. | Improve substrate uniformity on a test area before treating the whole deck; a different color will not fix uneven absorption. |
| The stain peels or flakes. | Residual film, incompatible prior coating, moisture problems or inadequate preparation. | Find and correct the adhesion or moisture cause before recoating. Scraping and re-staining without solving it usually repeats the failure. |
How to decide which sample is right for your setting
For a mostly gray exterior palette
Start with Cabot Driftwood Gray, Sherwin-Williams DB 2107 Driftwood or PPG Proluxe Driftwood ST-528, then compare their samples beside the siding and trim. Pick the one that stays neutral rather than turning blue in shade or brown in sun.
For warm beige or natural-wood surroundings
Favor the sample that retains a small amount of brown while still muting orange. A gray-brown driftwood result generally integrates more easily than a very cool gray, but the deck wood can shift that balance, so the test board decides.

For a deck with pronounced grain
Semi-transparent products preserve more of the board pattern than opaque coatings. Compare not just hue but also how the stain settles in earlywood and latewood bands. A color that looks smooth on a small, uniform board may reveal strong striping across full-length boards.
For heavily weathered or previously coated boards
Prioritize compatibility and preparation over the color name. Determine whether the old finish must be stripped, whether the wood can be cleaned evenly, and whether the selected product is approved for that substrate. If a test patch cannot be made uniform, postpone the full application.
Maintenance and when to reassess the color
Inspect the deck at least seasonally for fading, traffic wear, water absorption, mildew, peeling and newly exposed fibers. Horizontal boards usually experience more ultraviolet exposure and standing water than vertical siding, so they may need attention sooner. Clean according to the stain manufacturer’s instructions rather than using an unapproved strong chemical that could change the color.
When maintenance time comes, compare the weathered surface with the original retained sample. A faded gray may look warmer simply because the protective film has thinned and the wood’s undertone is showing through. Recoat only after confirming that the existing finish and preparation meet the next product’s requirements. Applying a new semi-transparent stain over an incompatible film can create patchiness regardless of how carefully the color was selected.
What “best” means for a neutral driftwood look
The best choice is not a universal color code. It is the semi-transparent gray or gray-brown sample that looks neutral in your outdoor light, leaves the desired amount of grain visible, and is compatible with your deck’s prepared surface. Use named colors such as Cabot Driftwood Gray, Sherwin-Williams DB 2107 Driftwood and PPG Proluxe Driftwood ST-528 as a shortlist, include BEHR Drift Gray ST-137 if you want a neighboring gray option, and make the final decision from cured samples on the actual wood.
