The best fit depends on how you cut: AccuQuilt GO! Bolt is the strongest match for portable, repeatable quilting cuts with compatible dies; GO! Big Electric offers a larger automatic die-cutting setup; and Cricut Maker 4 suits designers who prioritize custom digital shapes and a wider range of craft materials. These are different workflows, not interchangeable machines. The specifications below come from the manufacturers; no independent head-to-head performance testing is established.
What is the best electric fabric cutter for quilting?
For a quilter who wants an automatic, portable die cutter and whose pattern uses compatible GO! dies, AccuQuilt GO! Bolt is the clearest match. AccuQuilt lists it at 9.5 lb with a 10-inch cutting width, compatibility with more than 370 GO! dies, and capacity for up to six layers of cotton. Its portability makes it worth considering for small workspaces or retreats, but the die system and the project’s material requirements should drive the decision.
GO! Big Electric is the larger automatic alternative. AccuQuilt’s current comparison lists it at 23 lb, with up to six fabric layers and compatibility with more than 450 GO! dies. Choose between the two by checking the actual dies and fabrics your projects require, then weighing machine size and storage against the range of compatible shapes.

How do the machines differ?
| Machine | Best fit | Operation and ecosystem | Published capabilities | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AccuQuilt GO! Bolt | Portable die cutting for quilting and sewing | Automatic; uses compatible GO! dies and mats | 9.5 lb; 10-inch cutting width; 370+ GO! dies; up to six cotton layers, according to AccuQuilt | Not recommended for specified GO! Rag dies or certain projects involving quilted layers. Confirm the exact die and material guidance. |
| AccuQuilt GO! Big Electric | Automatic die cutting when a larger machine and broader die range suit the workspace | Automatic; uses compatible GO! dies | 23 lb; up to six fabric layers; 450+ GO! dies, according to AccuQuilt’s current comparison | The general layer figure does not establish suitability for every die, stacked material, batting, or quilted project. |
| Cricut Maker 4 | Custom digital shapes and broader craft-material use | Computer-guided cutting with Design Space and compatible tools | Cricut lists 300+ materials, including fabric, and 13 compatible tools | Those figures do not establish multi-layer batch quilting performance comparable to a die cutter. |

Can an electric fabric cutter cut several layers at once?
AccuQuilt states that GO! Bolt can cut up to six layers of cotton, while its comparison lists GO! Big Electric for up to six fabric layers. Treat these as manufacturer guidance rather than a guarantee for every fabric, die, or project. AccuQuilt advises: “Always begin with fewer layers and build up.” Follow the instructions for the particular die and cutter, especially when material includes batting or is already quilted.

Cricut’s Maker 4 page describes compatibility with fabric among 300+ materials, but that material count does not tell you how many fabric layers it can cut in one pass. The cited product information does not establish AccuQuilt-style batch quilting throughput.
Which fabric cutter is easiest on sore hands?
AccuQuilt’s comparison positions GO! Big Electric as automatic and especially suitable for people with arthritis. GO! Bolt is also an automatic cutter, so it may reduce the repeated manual effort associated with hand cutting, but the manufacturer comparison specifically calls out GO! Big Electric for arthritis. Neither statement is an independent ergonomics assessment, and comfort can depend on setup, workspace, handling dies and mats, and the individual user.

Consider how often you will move the machine, arrange fabric and dies, feed the cutting sandwich, and store accessories. If possible, confirm that you can comfortably manage the machine and its materials before committing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is AccuQuilt or Cricut better for cutting fabric?
AccuQuilt is the closer fit when the goal is repeatable quilting shapes cut in batches using dedicated dies. Cricut Maker 4 is the better fit when custom digital shapes and use across many craft materials matter more than established multi-layer quilt cutting. Cricut says Maker 4 works with 300+ materials, including fabric, and supports 13 compatible tools; its free Design Space app provides material cut settings.

Do not treat the machines’ material or die counts as direct measures of cutting quality or speed: they describe different ecosystems. The cited manufacturer information does not provide independent speed comparisons, long-term reliability results, or a verified throughput comparison between Cricut and AccuQuilt.
Do you need special dies for an electric fabric cutter?
For AccuQuilt GO! Bolt and GO! Big Electric, yes: the machines are designed around compatible GO! dies and cutting mats. Check that the die is supported by the specific machine and suits the project’s fabric arrangement. GO! Bolt’s starter set includes one 5-inch square die and a 6 × 6-inch cutting mat; those accessories do not provide every shape a quilt pattern may call for. Budget for any additional compatible dies and mats, and plan for their storage.
Cricut Maker 4 follows a different system: designs and material settings are handled through Design Space, with compatible tools used for cutting. Confirm that the tool and material combination supports your intended fabric project on Cricut’s Maker 4 product page.
What should you check before choosing?
- Pattern and shapes: List the shapes your projects need, then verify availability in the relevant die or digital-design ecosystem.
- Material and construction: Check the exact guidance for cotton, other fabrics, batting, rag projects, and already-quilted layers. A general layer maximum is not a universal compatibility promise.
- Cutting workflow: Choose an automatic die cutter for repeatable shapes and batch-oriented quilting; choose a computer-guided cutter when custom digital shapes and varied craft materials take priority.
- Workspace and transport: Account for machine weight, room to operate it, accessory storage, and whether you will carry it to classes or retreats.
- Total system cost: Include compatible dies and mats, not only the cutter or starter set. Manufacturer prices are US-specific and time-sensitive; verify current prices on the product pages.
- Accessibility: Consider setup and handling as well as the cutting action, and compare the manufacturer’s operation descriptions with your own needs.
