The best exterior paint colors for selling a house are usually adaptable neutrals and softened traditional shades that work with the roof, masonry, trim and surrounding streetscape. Twelve useful starting points include off-white, pale yellow, light blue, gray, taupe, putty, blue-gray, wheat, green, creamy white, brown and traditional red.
Those colors can improve a home’s presentation, but none is a proven way to add a fixed amount to the sale price. Treat the named shades below as palette ideas, then test samples on your actual exterior and check what fits your neighborhood and fixed materials.

What exterior color can—and cannot—do before a sale
Exterior color affects the first impression buyers form from the street and from listing photos. A coherent palette can make the architecture easier to read, help older siding look maintained and keep attention on the home’s proportions instead of on a jarring color choice. It cannot correct deferred maintenance, water damage, a failing roof or poor preparation.
There is also no published figure tying any of the twelve color directions in this article to a specific sale-price premium. Zillow reported that 19% of sellers repainted their home’s exterior before listing, but that statistic describes how often sellers do the work—not whether repainting, or one particular shade, raises an offer.

Zillow’s 2025 paint survey included more than 4,200 recent and prospective homebuyers who evaluated images of interior rooms painted in one of ten colors. Those findings concern interiors and should not be transferred to exterior paint. Realtor Elizabeth Mendenhall has advised that “Neutral and traditional colors are a good bet if you are going to paint your home’s exterior to get it ready to sell,” adding, “You want a look that is warm and inviting. Unique colors may turn away some potential buyers.”
The practical goal, therefore, is broad appeal and a well-maintained appearance rather than a guaranteed return. Erika Woelfel of Behr describes the stakes this way: “The color you paint your home’s exterior can make or break people’s perception of your house.”
Check the house before you choose a shade
Color cards are only a starting point. Make these checks before buying paint:
- Confirm the surface can be painted. Wood and many previously painted sidings accept paint; some vinyl, metal, masonry, engineered products and proprietary finishes have restrictions. Zillow recommends confirming that the material is suitable for painting before you commit.
- Inventory fixed colors. Record the roof, brick, stone veneer, foundation, gutters, windows, doors and any permanent shutters. A color that looks balanced beside a gray roof may clash with orange brick.
- Study the street. Look at successful nearby homes and note whether the local norm is light traditional palettes, darker modern colors or something else. A locally appropriate choice usually attracts less resistance than an outlier.
- Assess the architecture. Farmhouses, Colonials, cottages, Craftsman homes, ranches and contemporary houses each emphasize different trim and body relationships. Use color to clarify those lines rather than disguise them.
- Observe the landscape and light. Evergreen trees, dry grasses, neighboring walls and strong afternoon sun all change how a paint chip reads. View samples in morning, midday and evening light.
- Check neighborhood rules. A homeowners association, historic district or municipal review board may limit colors or require approval, regardless of what a paint store offers.
Twelve exterior color directions to consider
The examples in this table come from an idea list updated January 25, 2023. They are named products and shades to help you begin a palette search, not independently verified statements about current inventory or universal prescriptions. Confirm the formula, finish and availability with the manufacturer or a local retailer.

Off-white
Off-white gives a home a light, settled appearance without the glare of a pure white. It is especially useful on farmhouse and Colonial forms, where broad siding and symmetrical trim benefit from a quiet backdrop. Check it against bright white windows; a small difference in undertone can make the windows look dirty or the body look yellow.
Pale yellow
A muted yellow can make a shaded façade feel welcoming while remaining traditional. Keep the sample large enough to judge saturation, because yellow intensifies in direct sun. If the house already has warm brick or a tan roof, verify that the combination does not become uniformly orange.
Light blue
Light blue suits porches, coastal details and cottage proportions. It can recede attractively against greenery, but strong blue accents should be tested on the actual door or shutters so they do not overpower narrow elevations. Cloudy-day viewing is important; blue can look considerably grayer in low light.
Gray
A mid-value gray can bridge cool roofs and warm masonry. Its success depends on undertone: blue-gray next to orange brick creates contrast, while a warm gray can blend more gently. Paint a test beside the stone or brick rather than judging the color on a blank wall.

Taupe
Taupe is a flexible middle ground when a buyer may want something warmer than gray but less yellow than beige. It works well on established streets with mature trees. Watch the relationship between the body and brown accents; too little value contrast can flatten windows and trim.
Putty
Putty shades borrow the muted character of soil, stone and weathered wood. Amy Elbert, senior architecture editor for Traditional Home, says, “We’re seeing a lot of putty, warm taupe, and gray hues—exterior house colors that blend in with the natural surroundings.” This direction is strongest when the lot already contains those natural tones; on a stark urban façade it may need a cleaner trim contrast.
Blue-gray
Blue-gray can deliver a nautical, serene mood while remaining more restrained than a saturated navy. It is a useful bridge between a dark roof and white trim. On a small house, apply the darker value selectively so the building does not appear visually compressed from the street.
Wheat
Wheat offers warmth without the intensity of yellow. It is forgiving beside dry landscaping and many brown roofs, but sample it next to stone because some stones contain pink or gray undertones that can make wheat look unexpectedly orange or green.

Green
A green-gray neutral can settle a house into a leafy lot and make dark shutters feel intentional. In open, treeless settings it may read more strongly than expected. Compare the sample with summer and winter foliage if the home will be listed in a season different from when you paint.
Creamy white
Creamy white is softer than stark white and can preserve the traditional character of older siding. It is particularly helpful when a bright white body would expose every uneven transition. Make sure the chosen cream does not conflict with a fixed ivory window or garage door.

A nature-inspired brown can complement stone veneers and metal accents, giving a large façade visual weight. Dark colors absorb more solar heat and make surface defects easier to see, so confirm the siding manufacturer’s guidance and inspect the wall for repairs before selecting this direction.
Red
Red is the most emphatic option in the list and can suit a traditional home that already has strong architectural detailing. Because it attracts attention, keep the rest of the palette disciplined and inspect the house from across the street; a red that looks rich on a small card may dominate an entire elevation.

How to narrow the list to one sale-ready palette
Start with the permanent elements
Choose the body color only after you identify the undertone of the roof, masonry and windows. If those elements are cool, a blue-gray, neutral gray or softened white may connect them. Warm brick, tan stone and wood often support taupe, putty, wheat, cream or brown. The objective is a relationship among materials, not a freestanding favorite color.
Assign a visual hierarchy
Most successful exteriors have a body color, a trim color and one controlled accent. Use trim to describe eaves, columns and window surrounds. Reserve the strongest contrast for a front door or shutters when the architecture supports it. Painting every element at equal intensity makes the façade harder to read in listing photographs.

Compare samples at full scale
Paint large boards or sections on multiple sides of the house. Leave each sample in place through a sunny period, an overcast period and the evening. Stand at the sidewalk and photograph the elevations; colors that seem subtle up close can become dominant at listing-photo distance.
Get a local second opinion
A local real-estate agent can explain what buyers respond to on that particular street, while neighbors can reveal whether a shade conflicts with an established palette. This is market context, not a promise of a higher offer. Keep the final decision tied to the house’s materials and condition.
A practical exterior painting sequence
- Verify permission and substrate. Check HOA or historic-district requirements and confirm with the siding or masonry manufacturer that the surface may be painted.
- Inspect and repair. Replace rotten boards, secure loose siding, address failed caulk and correct moisture problems before washing or priming.
- Clean and prepare. Remove dirt, mildew and chalk; allow the surface to dry. Scrape failing paint and feather edges so the new coating does not telegraph defects.
- Prime where needed. Use the primer specified for the substrate and for stains or major color changes. Follow the product label for recoat time and weather limits.
- Paint a test area. Apply the actual product and sheen—not only a small color chip—to several elevations and beside fixed materials.
- Paint in a logical order. Work from upper areas downward, keeping a wet edge and protecting windows, masonry, plants and hardware. Follow the label’s temperature, humidity and curing requirements.
- Evaluate the finished appearance. Walk to the street, review photographs and check that the accent color supports rather than competes with the body and trim.
Pitfalls that can weaken curb appeal
- Choosing from a tiny chip: Large walls amplify undertones and brightness.
- Ignoring unpaintable materials: A palette that assumes every surface can match may leave an awkward patchwork.
- Copying a neighboring color exactly: The same paint can look different beside another roof, stone or landscape.
- Using a dramatic color to solve a maintenance problem: Buyers notice peeling, rot and stained masonry regardless of shade.
- Assuming an interior-color finding applies outside: The Zillow buyer survey measured reactions to interior images, not exterior façades.
- Relying on a color name alone: Formulas, lighting, sheen and substrate change the result; verify the specific product and finish.
Bottom line for sellers
Use these twelve directions to build a restrained, house-specific palette: off-whites and creams for traditional brightness; grays, taupes and putties for adaptable neutrality; blues and greens for softer character; wheat and brown for natural warmth; and red when the architecture can carry a stronger statement. Confirm paintability, test at full scale, compare the home with nearby successful listings and fix surface problems first. That process can produce a more inviting presentation without claiming that any single exterior shade guarantees a higher sale price.
