The Flashforge Adventurer 5M is the best starting point for most beginners: it is a single-color printer with automatic leveling, a removable PEI plate and a 220 × 220 × 220 mm build area. Choose the enclosed Adventurer 5M Pro if its camera and filtration matter in your space, or the AD5X if four-color printing is a priority. Flashforge’s current US collection lists four principal models, so the fifth option here is a refurbished AD5M—not a separate current printer family. Prices below are US prices observed August 16–18, 2026; sales, stock, bundles, shipping and taxes can change.

1. Adventurer 5M: best overall for beginners

The AD5M is the strongest default choice if you want to learn 3D printing without paying for features you may not use. It combines a 220 mm cubed print area with automatic leveling, a flexible removable PEI steel plate, a single direct-drive extruder and quick-detach nozzles. Flashforge says setup takes under 10 minutes; treat that as an assembly claim, not a promise that software selection, calibration and learning your first slicer will take the same time.

The printer’s US product page listed $299 on sale against a $399 reference price when checked. Its listed maximums are 600 mm/s speed and 20,000 mm/s² acceleration, with a 280°C maximum extruder temperature and 100°C platform temperature. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every model will print well at maximum speed. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB. Flashforge lists FlashPrint 5, Orca-Flashforge and Orca Slicer compatibility; its comparison page now calls its desktop software Flash Studio Desktop, formerly Orca-Flashforge.

What it handles well—and what it does not

For a first project, start with PLA. PETG is a reasonable next step once you can get reliable first layers. Flashforge lists PLA and PETG for the 0.4 mm nozzle and offers 0.25, 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8 mm nozzle options. The open frame is the important limitation: Flashforge explicitly says ABS-series filament is not compatible with the standard AD5M. Do not buy this model expecting to print ABS or ASA just because its nozzle gets hot.

The PEI plate, automatic leveling and quick-change nozzle reduce some routine friction, but they do not eliminate basic learning. You still need to choose print orientation, add supports when needed, keep the plate clean, use suitable filament settings and troubleshoot failed prints. There is no built-in filtration listed for the AD5M, so consider the room and material rather than treating an open desktop printer as suitable for every environment.

Who should skip it

Choose another model if an enclosure is a firm requirement, if you specifically need four-color output, or if your planned materials require an enclosed printer. The 220 mm cube is generous for many household organizers, figurines, brackets and small functional parts, but not for unusually large or tall objects.

2. Adventurer 5M Pro: best enclosed beginner printer

The 5M Pro is the more self-contained option for a shared room, classroom or home where enclosure features matter. It has the same 220 × 220 × 220 mm build volume and the same advertised 600 mm/s maximum speed as the AD5M. Its premium principally buys an enclosed shell, camera monitoring, HEPA plus activated-carbon filtration, automatic shutdown and stated noise modes of 50 dB in low-noise mode and 55 dB in standard mode. Those noise figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements here.

The US page listed $449 sale / $599 reference when checked. Flashforge lists the Pro for PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA, TPU and some composite filaments, subject to nozzle-dependent limitations. An enclosure can make materials such as ABS/ASA more practical, but filtration is not a guarantee that all emissions are removed or that ventilation is unnecessary. Follow material guidance and the safety rules for the room where the printer will run. Flashforge lists a 12-month limited printer warranty and a 3-month warranty for extruder parts on one current product page; check the terms for your region, seller and order.

Is the Pro worth the premium?

It is worth considering when enclosure, monitoring and filtration have practical value for your setup. It is not the upgrade to buy for larger prints: its print area is the same as the AD5M’s, and both advertise the same headline speed. For a buyer printing mostly PLA in a suitable space, the base AD5M is the more economical fit.

3. AD5X: best for multicolor printing

Choose the AD5X when four-color printing is central to the projects you want to make, rather than an occasional curiosity. Flashforge’s US page listed $399 sale / $549 reference and advertises four-color printing, up to 600 mm/s speed, 20,000 mm/s² acceleration, quick setup and a 99% print-resume-success figure. The resume figure is Flashforge’s claim, not an independently verified result.

Multicolor printing introduces more filament handling, opportunities for loading errors and purge material or other waste; a multicolor job can also take longer than a comparable single-color print. For ordinary single-color parts, the AD5M offers a simpler workflow. The AD5X is also a distinct machine, not a straightforward AD5M upgrade: Flashforge says their mainboards are not interchangeable, so do not assume that swapping electronics converts an AD5M into an AD5X.

For specialized tasks, optionally upgrade to the ultra-fine 0.25mm nozzle for miniature details, or to the 0.6mm/0.8mm nozzles to slash print time on large, sturdy models.

4. Refurbished Adventurer 5M: best budget option when terms are clear

Flashforge’s comparison page includes refurbished AD5M and AD5M Pro listings, but a live listing’s price, stock, condition, warranty and return terms determine whether it is actually a good deal. The available information does not establish a current refurbished price or warranty that can be applied to every unit.

Before ordering, confirm the exact model and ask what is included: build plate, nozzle, spool holder and other accessories can affect the real cost. Check who is selling it, how the condition is graded, whether the warranty is stated in writing and what return window applies. On arrival, inspect the printer and included parts before discarding packaging, then run a small PLA print before relying on it for a deadline. A refurbished unit can lower the entry cost, but it should not be assumed equivalent to a new one.

5. Guider 3 Ultra: best for unusually large prints

The Guider 3 Ultra is the specialist option for a beginner who already knows they need a much larger machine. Flashforge lists a 330 × 330 × 600 mm build volume, dual extruders and a CoreXY structure. Its US collection showed a starting price of $2,999 against a $3,499 reference price when checked.

That capacity is useful when the object itself is too large for a 220 mm cube—such as a tall prop or a large component—but it brings a much higher cost and demands more space. Most first-time users making household models, toys, gifts or small functional parts do not need this scale. Buy it for a concrete large-format requirement, not as a general-purpose beginner upgrade.

Which Flashforge should you buy?

  • For the least complicated, lower-cost start: Adventurer 5M, if PLA and PETG suit your plans and an open frame is appropriate for your space.
  • For an enclosure, camera and filtration: Adventurer 5M Pro.
  • For four-color projects: AD5X, accepting the additional material-management workflow.
  • For the lowest verified price: a refurbished AD5M or Pro only when the live listing clearly states condition, warranty, returns and included parts.
  • For parts too large or tall for a 220 mm cube: Guider 3 Ultra, if the price and footprint make sense for your use.

What matters most in a first 3D printer?

First layers and setup

A print has little chance if it does not stick properly at the start. Automatic leveling reduces one source of setup work, while a removable flexible PEI plate makes it easier to release many finished prints. Neither feature fixes a dirty plate, unsuitable temperature or poor filament condition. Clean the plate as directed by Flashforge and verify it is seated properly before changing slicer settings.

Flashforge promotes sub-10-minute setup for the AD5M, but setup is only the beginning. You still have to install a slicer, choose the correct printer and material profile, and understand how to prepare a model. The printer’s controls and exact menu wording can vary by firmware; use the current manual and support instructions for model-specific steps.

Materials and enclosure

PLA is the most sensible first material for most beginners. PETG is a useful second material, while TPU and carbon-fiber blends call for more attention to settings and nozzle choice. ABS and ASA bring additional enclosure and ventilation considerations; Flashforge specifically excludes ABS-series filament for the open AD5M. An enclosure helps control the printing environment, but does not by itself settle ventilation or material-safety questions.

Print area and maintenance

A 220 × 220 × 220 mm build area covers many common beginner projects. Before paying for a larger printer, measure the largest object you actually intend to make. Routine care is less glamorous than speed specifications: keep filament dry, clean the plate, replace or unclog nozzles according to instructions, and apply firmware or slicer updates deliberately.

Software and connectivity

Flashforge lists FlashPrint 5 and Orca Slicer compatibility for the AD5M series. A manufacturer-led slicer can be a simpler starting point; Orca Slicer offers users more control. Flashforge’s comparison page uses the current name Flash Studio Desktop for software formerly called Orca-Flashforge, and Flash Studio Mobile for the app formerly called Flash Maker. Do not assume a phone app replaces a desktop slicing workflow; confirm the specific mobile features you need before buying on that basis.

A practical first-print path

  1. Unbox the printer and remove all transport restraints, following the included instructions.
  2. Install the display, spool holder and any required accessories.
  3. Load dry PLA and run the printer’s automatic leveling or datum-management routine.
  4. Install a current compatible slicer, then select the exact printer and PLA profile.
  5. Prepare a small test print and start it with the printer’s normal recommended settings rather than maximum-speed targets.
  6. Watch the first layer: it should adhere evenly across the plate without loose lines or obvious gaps.
  7. After a successful print, change one setting at a time if you need to troubleshoot or improve results. Try PETG only after you are comfortable with PLA.

Common beginner problems and sensible fixes

  • Poor adhesion: clean the PEI plate, check that it is seated, rerun leveling and, if the profile permits, reduce first-layer speed.
  • Warping: review bed temperature, cooling, drafts and material choice. An enclosure can help with materials that benefit from a more controlled environment.
  • Clogged nozzle: stop the print and follow Flashforge’s current nozzle service instructions at the appropriate temperature. Do not force filament through a cold nozzle.
  • Filament runout: reload filament and confirm the extruder grips it before resuming.
  • Remote-print failure: try a local USB print to help distinguish a file or profile issue from a network problem.
  • Print stuck to the plate: allow the plate and part to cool before removal; avoid force that could damage the PEI surface.

For exact maintenance instructions, firmware-specific controls and current software names, consult Flashforge’s comparison and software page and the relevant official product page: AD5M, AD5M Pro, or AD5X.
