For concentrated pigment in a flowing paint, consider GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics; for an everyday, budget-conscious option, consider Liquitex Basics Acrylic Fluid. These are conditional picks based on how the makers describe their products—not a universal ranking. The two paints were not independently tested head to head here, and current prices were not established.
What fluid acrylic paint is best for your work?
Start with the way you want the paint to move. Fluid acrylics are designed to flow more readily than heavier-bodied paints, which can make them useful for fine detail, smooth long strokes, washes, glazing, staining, and pouring. The right choice depends on how much pigment strength you want, your budget, and the properties of the specific colors you plan to use.

| Paint | Best fit | What the maker says | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| GOLDEN Fluid Acrylics | Artists who want a fluid consistency with pigment load comparable to GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics. | GOLDEN says the line has a viscosity similar to heavy cream, uses no fillers or extenders to achieve its fluid consistency, and can be used for detail, dry brush, pouring, spraying, staining, and water-media techniques. | These are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Current price per usable amount was not established. |
| Liquitex Basics Acrylic Fluid | Everyday flowing acrylic for painters seeking an accessible alternative to professional-range paint. | Liquitex says the paint uses the same types of fine art pigments as its Basics range, at a lighter pigment load than its professional paints. It describes the paint as usable straight from the bottle for detail, broad coverage, and pouring. | A lighter pigment load than Liquitex’s professional range may mean it is not the pick for artists prioritizing maximum pigment concentration. Current price per usable amount was not established. |
The comparison reflects each manufacturer’s published product positioning; it does not establish which paint covers better or performs better in a particular technique.
How to choose a fluid acrylic
Match consistency to the technique
Choose a fluid paint when you want it to move smoothly from brush or tool, rather than hold the thicker shape of a heavy-body paint. GOLDEN lists fine detail, dry brush, pouring, spraying, staining, and water-media uses for its Fluid Acrylics. Liquitex lists fine detail, broad coverage, and pouring for Basics Acrylic Fluid, and describes it as more fluid and flowing than regular Basics Acrylic.

Decide how much pigment strength matters
GOLDEN says its Fluid Acrylics have a pigment load comparable to its Heavy Body Acrylics, without fillers or extenders added to create the fluid consistency. That is a manufacturer description, not an independently verified comparison. Liquitex says Basics Acrylic Fluid uses fine art pigments at a lighter pigment load than its professional paints. If strong color in a fluid consistency is the priority, GOLDEN’s stated formulation is the closer match; if everyday use matters more, Liquitex positions Basics Acrylic Fluid for that role.
Check the individual color, not just the line
“Fluid” describes consistency, not a uniform level of transparency, opacity, or sheen. GOLDEN says its Fluid colors retain pigment-specific differences, while Liquitex advises that opacity varies by color and should be checked on the label. Look at the particular color’s information before choosing it for a covering layer, glaze, or transparent effect.

Compare value by usable amount
No current prices or controlled coverage results were established for these options, so a reliable price-per-area comparison is not available. Compare the prices and container sizes available to you, then factor in whether the color strength and coverage suit your work; do not treat a lower sticker price as proof of lower cost per finished painting.
Do you need to dilute fluid acrylic paint?
Not necessarily. Liquitex says Basics Acrylic Fluid can be used straight from the bottle. GOLDEN’s instructions vary by use: its technical guidance recommends no more than a 1:1 ratio of Fluid Acrylic to water for uses other than staining and washes. GOLDEN also cautions that adding too much water can reduce acrylic binding capability and flatten sheen. Follow the directions for the paint and technique you are using rather than applying one brand’s dilution guidance to all acrylics.

- HIGHLY VERSATILE - Ideal for pouring, large area coverage, fine detail, splattering and everything in between.
- THE PERFECT BOTTLE - Squeezable body make it easy to direct and control. Flip-top cap is quick to open and close one-handed. Screw-off top and wide neck give easier access.
Using fluid acrylics for pouring
Both makers list pouring among the possible uses of their fluid paints. Liquitex says Basics Acrylic Fluid can be mixed with fluid mediums such as Professional Pouring Medium. For thick pours, GOLDEN notes that acrylic films can craze as they dry and shrink; it discusses gels or small additions of GAC 800 as ways to help reduce the issue. Follow the current product directions and test your own combination of paint, medium, surface, and pour thickness, since these recommendations are not a universal recipe.
Compatibility, finish, and permanence
GOLDEN says its Fluid Acrylics blend with GOLDEN acrylic colors and many of the company’s mediums and grounds. Liquitex describes Basics Acrylic Fluid as drying to a permanent, water-resistant finish and reports AP certification for the product. These statements apply to the products as described by their manufacturers; check the specific color label and safety data sheet, and follow the maker’s current guidance.

Neither line can be assumed to have one uniform sheen or opacity across every color. Consult the label or product information for the color you intend to use, especially when those properties affect a layered or transparent passage.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The available product descriptions support a practical distinction: GOLDEN emphasizes concentrated pigment in a fluid consistency, while Liquitex positions Basics Acrylic Fluid as an everyday flowing acrylic with a lighter pigment load than its professional range. They do not establish an overall winner, a verified retail ranking, current prices, or comparative performance in a controlled test. Choose according to your technique and priorities, then test the specific colors and materials you plan to use.
