Adobe Illustrator remains powerful, but its subscription, account requirements, and dense interface are not ideal for every painter or illustrator. The best free replacement depends on what you actually make: an open-source SVG logo, an iPad illustration, a printable poster, a collaborative project, or a quick web graphic.

For 2025, Affinity is the closest professional replacement, while Inkscape is the strongest genuinely free and open-source choice. Linearity Curve is particularly appealing on Apple devices, Figma suits collaborative vector work, and Vectr is useful for simple browser-based graphics.

1. Affinity: the best professional Illustrator replacement
Affinity became the most significant free Illustrator alternative in 2025. On October 29, Canva launched a new unified Affinity application combining vector design, photo editing, and page-layout tools. It replaces the need to treat Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher as separate applications.
The application is free, but “free” does not mean account-free. You need a free Canva account to download and use it, and Canva’s terms allow online entitlement verification. It is therefore not the right choice if your priority is a completely independent, offline application with no account connection.
For professional illustration, however, Affinity is the closest match to Illustrator in this list. It supports importing AI, PSD, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML, making it useful when moving an existing design archive away from Adobe. It also combines vector, raster, and layout features in one application—handy for a painter who needs to turn artwork into a poster, book cover, presentation, or product sheet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
In the older Affinity interface, vector work takes place in Designer Persona, raster editing in Pixel Persona, and export preparation in Export Persona. The new unified application may present these tools differently, but the same division of work explains why Affinity feels more like a studio application than a lightweight logo editor.
Choose Affinity if:
- You need professional vector tools for branding, illustration, or print.
- You regularly exchange AI, PDF, SVG, or PSD files.
- You want vector, raster, and page-layout features together.
Watch out: older articles that call Affinity Designer a paid one-time purchase are describing the previous Affinity V2 products, not the free unified Affinity launched in October 2025. Optional Canva AI features are separate from the core design application and may depend on a Canva subscription.

2. Inkscape: the best genuinely free and open-source option
Inkscape is the safest recommendation for readers who want no subscription, no proprietary license, and no required account. It is free, open source under the GPL, and available for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS. Its native format is SVG, so it is especially well suited to logos, icons, diagrams, plotter designs, and artwork intended for the web.
Inkscape can open or import SVG, SVGZ, PDF, EPS, AI, and raster formats. It can export SVG, PDF, PostScript/EPS, PNG, and other formats through extensions. Version 1.4.2, released on May 12, 2025, added initial Linearity Curve import support, improved Affinity Designer .afdesign import, and fixed several PDF-import crashes.
It is a strong choice for painters who need to trace a sketch, create clean vector shapes from hand-drawn work, or prepare an illustration for screen printing. The program also gives you unusually direct control over SVG structure and export settings.
Exporting a transparent PNG in Inkscape
- Open File → Export PNG Image, or press Shift+Ctrl+E.
- Choose Page, Drawing, Selection, or Custom as the export area.
- Check the pixel dimensions and destination filename.
- Click Export.
PNG export uses a transparent background by default. To add an opaque background, open File → Document Properties and change the document background color and alpha value. Also note that a selection exports tightly to its bounds; there is no automatic margin. Artwork that appears “cut off” may simply be cropped exactly to the selected area.
Where Inkscape falls short
Inkscape does not edit every AI file perfectly. Illustrator-specific features such as gradient meshes, transparency modes, embedded fonts, and metadata can change during import. An AI file may also contain Illustrator’s embedded editing payload. If you edit the visible SVG content in Inkscape and then reopen the file in Illustrator, Illustrator can prefer that original embedded data, making your Inkscape changes appear to have disappeared.
For more dependable interchange, export an SVG from Illustrator with Preserve Adobe Illustrator Editing disabled. PDF imports have improved, but missing fonts, Type 3 fonts, clipping, transparency, and embedded bitmap content can still produce unexpected results.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
3. Linearity Curve: the best choice for Apple devices
Linearity Curve—formerly Vectornator—is designed for people who want to move between Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Its touch-friendly tools and cleaner interface make it less intimidating than Illustrator, particularly for sketching, social graphics, and quick branding work.
The free plan includes 10 artboards and 8 total files, with PNG/JPEG export, SVG/PDF export, Figma and AI import, a Pen & Brush Tool, Shape Builder, Auto Trace, and limited custom-font usage. The eight-file limit combines local and cloud files; it is not eight of each.
There is an important storage catch. Local file storage is a Pro feature. If you downgrade from Pro, local files remain on your device but cannot be opened or edited on the Free plan. That makes Curve attractive for experimenting or maintaining a small active portfolio, but less suitable as an unlimited archive.
Exporting from Linearity Curve
- Select the Share / Export arrow in the top bar.
- Choose SVG, PDF, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or the native
.curveformat. - Adjust the available export settings.
- Select Export.
If export is unavailable, check Profile → Manage Subscription, available device storage, and pending app updates. These are more likely causes than a problem with the artwork itself.

4. Figma: the best collaborative browser-based option
Figma is primarily a product-design and interface tool, but its vector layers, shapes, text, grids, constraints, Smart Selection, Vector Networks, and Arc Tool make it useful for icons, web illustrations, UI assets, and collaborative design projects.
Its biggest advantage is simultaneous editing. A painter, designer, and client can review and adjust a graphic in the same file without passing application files back and forth. The free Starter plan includes unlimited files in Drafts and unlimited viewers, but free co-editing is limited to up to three files, with a three-page limit per file.

Exporting a vector from Figma
- Select a layer, frame, group, section, or component.
- Find Export in the right sidebar.
- Click the + button and choose PNG, JPG, SVG, or PDF.
- Click Export.
Figma’s SVG export has several important differences from Illustrator. SVG is exported at 1×; scaling must be handled in the SVG code or by exporting another format. Text is exported as glyphs by default, so disable Outline text if you need editable text. Strokes are exported as fills, which can alter how the artwork behaves in another vector editor. PDF text is also exported as glyphs, and some blend modes—including Plus darker and Plus lighter—are not supported in PDF export.
Figma is therefore excellent for screen-based artwork and teamwork, but not a full replacement for Illustrator’s print-production and prepress workflow.
5. Vectr: the best lightweight browser editor
Vectr is aimed at quick graphics rather than complex illustration. It handles basic paths, shapes, text, image uploads, logos, and icons in a browser, and supports real-time collaboration. Designs can be exported as SVG, PNG, or JPG.
It is a practical choice when you need to make a small edit on a computer that cannot install software. Chrome is the most compatible browser according to Vectr; if the editor behaves oddly, try clearing the browser cache or opening it in an incognito window.
Vectr’s current help information lists SVG, PNG, JPG, EPS, AI, PDF, and SVGZ support, but opening EPS, AI, PDF, and SVGZ files requires credits. Its advertised AI functions—such as background removal and image-to-vector conversion—should not be confused with advanced, manual Illustrator-style vector editing.
Use Vectr for a simple logo, icon, or web graphic. Do not choose it for demanding typography, color management, complex path construction, or print prepress.

Which free Illustrator alternative should you choose?
| Your priority | Best pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Closest professional replacement | Affinity | Broad file compatibility and vector, raster, and layout tools |
| No account or subscription | Inkscape | Open source and available on all three major desktop platforms |
| Drawing on an iPad | Linearity Curve | Touch-focused workflow and Apple-device syncing |
| Working with a remote team | Figma | Real-time browser collaboration and easy review |
| Making a quick browser graphic | Vectr | Simple interface and fast SVG/PNG/JPG export |
Alternatives that should not be on a current shortlist
Older comparison articles often recommend Corel Vector, formerly known as Gravit Designer. It should not be treated as a current free alternative: contemporary 2025 reports indicated that Corel Vector was discontinued in August 2025, and its official sign-in page no longer represents a normal active product offering.
Likewise, be cautious with articles that describe Affinity only as a paid one-time purchase, Linearity Curve as unlimited for free, or Figma as exporting editable SVG text and strokes exactly like Illustrator. Those descriptions omit restrictions that matter when you are moving real artwork between applications.
FAQ
What is the best free Adobe Illustrator alternative in 2025?
Affinity is the strongest professional replacement after Canva made the new unified Affinity application free on October 29, 2025. It requires a free Canva account. Inkscape is the better choice if you want open-source software with no account or subscription.
Can Inkscape open Adobe Illustrator files?
Inkscape can import AI files, but compatibility is not perfect. Gradient meshes, transparency modes, embedded fonts, and Illustrator-specific metadata may change. For more reliable transfer, export SVG from Illustrator with Preserve Adobe Illustrator Editing disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs Figma a complete replacement for Illustrator?
No. Figma is excellent for collaborative UI assets, icons, web graphics, and vector components, but it is not designed as a complete print-illustration or prepress application. Its SVG export also converts strokes to fills and outlines text by default.
Is Linearity Curve free without limits?
No. The current free plan lists 10 artboards and 8 total files. Local file storage is restricted to Pro, and some export and custom-font features are limited by plan.
The Bottom Line
Choose Affinity for the closest professional Illustrator replacement, Inkscape for a truly free and open-source desktop tool, and Linearity Curve if your work revolves around Apple devices. Use Figma when collaboration matters more than print production, and Vectr only for uncomplicated browser graphics. The right choice is less about finding one universal Illustrator clone and more about matching the editor to your artwork, devices, and file-sharing needs.
