For most desktop artists, Krita is the best free and open-source alternative to Sketchbook. It is built for digital painting, illustration, comics and concept art, with strong brush, layer and tablet tools. If you want a simpler, more pencil-like canvas, choose MyPaint instead. GIMP is better when photo editing and compositing matter, Inkscape for vector artwork, and Tux Paint for young children.
One naming note: Autodesk SketchBook is now officially presented as Sketchbook, operated by Sketchbook, Inc. The recommendations below focus on genuinely open-source software, not merely free proprietary apps.

“Best” depends on what you mean by closest: Krita is the closest complete illustrator workflow; MyPaint is closest to Sketchbook’s simplicity; and no open-source option currently matches Sketchbook’s iPad availability.
1. Krita: best overall replacement
Krita is the default recommendation for anyone replacing Sketchbook on a computer. Its focus is digital painting rather than general image manipulation, so brushes, stabilizers, layers, canvas navigation, color control and illustration workflows are central. It is suitable for concept art, comics, painting and finished illustrations.

The official download page listed Krita 5.3.3, released July 29, 2026, when checked on August 18, 2026. It supports Windows 8.1 or newer, macOS 10.15 or newer, Linux and Android; iPadOS and iOS are not supported. Krita lists 4 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB as recommended. Large canvases, many layers, animation frames and long undo histories can require considerably more.
Krita is free and GPL v3 open source. Paid Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic and Mac App Store editions are distribution channels with automatic store-managed updates; they do not make the project proprietary.
Choose Krita if: you want one serious desktop application for sketching, painting, comics or concept work. Expect: more dockers, menus and configuration than Sketchbook’s deliberately clean interface.

2. MyPaint: best for lightweight sketching
MyPaint is the strongest choice when the act of drawing matters more than production features. It offers an infinite canvas, configurable brushes, tablet-oriented input, fullscreen use and a paint-like pigment model. The interface stays out of the way, making it comfortable for loose studies, gesture drawing and visual notes.
Its limitation is scope. Compared with Krita, MyPaint is less suitable for complex layer management, masks, text, selections, compositing, animation or final delivery. The project repository provides Windows packages, Linux AppImages, source instructions and a Windows winget route; verify a current macOS installer before relying on it.

3. GIMP: best when editing matters as much as drawing
GIMP is a mature open-source raster editor with masks, retouching, color work, selections, compositing and broad image-manipulation tools. It is an excellent companion to Krita, or the right single application if photographs and painted elements share the same workflow.
It is not the closest Sketchbook substitute. Its terminology and workspace are designed for general raster editing, so freehand painting can feel less direct than in Krita or MyPaint. The official download page listed GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026, for Windows, macOS and Linux/Unix-like systems. GIMP warns that it does not publish an official Apple App Store package; App Store listings are third-party packages.
4. Inkscape: best for vector illustration
Inkscape solves a different problem. It is the specialist choice for SVG artwork, logos, icons, diagrams, lettering and line art that must scale without pixelation. You work with paths, nodes, fills, strokes and aligned objects rather than a raster brush canvas.
Use Inkscape when scalable artwork is the requirement. Do not choose it expecting Sketchbook-style textured painting or natural brush blending.

5. Tux Paint: best for children
Tux Paint is free, GPL-licensed and designed for children approximately ages 3–12. Its simplified controls, stamps, sound effects and mascot-led interface work well at home or in classrooms. It supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and Android-capable Chromebooks, among other platforms listed by the project.

That simplicity is intentional: Tux Paint is not a professional illustration application. Choose Krita or MyPaint for older students and serious art.
Choose by use case
- Professional digital painting, comics or concept art: Krita.
- Quick sketches and a paper-like, uncluttered canvas: MyPaint.
- Painting plus masks, retouching and compositing: GIMP, or Krita plus GIMP.
- Logos, icons, diagrams and scalable line art: Inkscape.
- Children aged roughly 3–12: Tux Paint.
- Android tablet: Krita is the most capable open-source option, but test its desktop-style interface on your device.
- iPad or iPhone: none of these primary recommendations is a direct open-source Sketchbook Pro replacement; Krita officially does not support iOS or iPadOS.
- Older hardware: test MyPaint first for simple work, but do not assume performance. Canvas size, brushes, layers, RAM, GPU and drivers all matter.
Tablet pressure: the application is only one part of the system
Pressure sensitivity depends on the application, tablet hardware, operating-system input API and manufacturer driver. Krita states that tablets compatible with the operating system should work. On Windows, Sketchbook’s documentation specifically requires Windows Ink for stylus pressure.
- Install the tablet maker’s current driver and restart the drawing application.
- Check whether Windows Ink or the tablet’s native protocol is selected as appropriate.
- Confirm that the brush preset has pressure mapped to size or opacity.
- Test the pen in another application to separate hardware/driver faults from app settings.
- Make sure the drawing application and tablet service are not running under conflicting permissions.
A moving cursor proves only that position is detected; it does not prove pressure, tilt or eraser data is working.
Migrating Sketchbook projects safely
Do not make a conversion your only archive. Sketchbook’s native projects may contain brushes, blend modes, guides, text objects or metadata that another program cannot reproduce exactly.

- Keep untouched copies of every original project.
- Export a flattened PNG or TIFF for guaranteed visual reference.
- Export a layered interchange copy, such as PSD or OpenRaster, where your source application supports it.
- Open the copy in the target application, never the only original.
- Check layer order, opacity, blend modes, masks, guides, text, colors and brush appearance.
- Retain the originals even after a successful conversion.
PNG and TIFF preserve appearance well; they do not preserve editable layers. PSD or OpenRaster can carry layers, but interchange is not guaranteed to preserve every effect.

For this article, open source means the project publishes source code under a recognized license that permits inspection and modification. A free download may still be proprietary, ad-supported or account-dependent. That is why commercial or freeware drawing apps are excluded from the main ranking.
Recommended combinations
If no single program feels like Sketchbook, use MyPaint for loose ideation and Krita for refinement and delivery. Use Krita for the artwork, then GIMP when you need extensive photo correction or compositing. Inkscape can complement either for logos, lettering or vector elements.
Do these apps require an account?
The official desktop distributions of Krita, GIMP and MyPaint do not require buying a subscription. A store edition may use that store’s account for installation and updates, but the free project downloads remain available through their official sites.

Can Krita open Sketchbook files?
Do not assume native Sketchbook projects will open directly. Export a flattened PNG/TIFF and, separately, a layered interchange copy; test layer order, effects, text and brushes on a duplicate.

Is Krita available on iPad?
No. Krita’s current official support information lists Android but explicitly excludes iPads and iPhones.
Is GIMP good for drawing with a tablet?
It supports tablet drawing, but its workflow is optimized for general raster editing. Choose Krita or MyPaint when brush-first sketching is the priority.
Which option is easiest for a child?

Start with Krita if you want one capable, open-source desktop replacement for Sketchbook. Pick MyPaint for a lighter sketching experience, GIMP for image editing, Inkscape for vector work and Tux Paint for young children. iPad-only users should know there is currently no direct open-source equivalent among these recommendations.
