For drawing over screen content during a Windows presentation or software demo, start with ZoomIt, Microsoft Sysinternals’ free screen zoom, annotation, and recording utility. It has a separate LiveDraw mode for live content, plus screenshot capture, OCR, text and shape annotations, and configurable hotkeys. For screenshots, illustrations, or a separate collaborative canvas, use Snipping Tool, Paint, or Whiteboard instead; they serve different jobs, not as universal desktop overlays.

ZoomIt runs from the system tray and uses configurable hotkeys. Microsoft describes it as a screen zoom, annotation, and recording tool for technical presentations. Its documented features include colored pens and highlights, text, lines, rectangles, ellipses, arrows, screenshot capture, region OCR, and a timer.
Microsoft Sysinternals lists ZoomIt version 12.22, published September 10, 2026. Microsoft says ZoomIt works on all Windows versions and supports touch and pen input on tablets. Version details can change, so check the official documentation before downloading.
Choose the right ZoomIt mode
ZoomIt has separate workflows for zooming, drawing without zooming, LiveZoom, and LiveDraw. Use LiveDraw when you want to draw over live content; do not assume every drawing mode behaves the same way. Test the exact application, display, and presentation or recording setup you plan to use.

For shape drawing, hold Shift for a straight line, Ctrl for a rectangle, Tab for an ellipse, or Ctrl+Shift for an arrow while drawing. ZoomIt’s documented recording shortcut saves MP4 or GIF and requires Windows 10 May 2019 Update or later.
How to draw over a Windows screen with ZoomIt
- Download ZoomIt from the official Microsoft Sysinternals page and run it.
- Open its settings and choose hotkeys that do not conflict with the application you will demonstrate.
- Press Ctrl+2 to draw without zooming, or Ctrl+1 to enter zoom mode.
- Use Ctrl+Shift+4 for LiveDraw when you want to annotate live content.
- Hold a shape modifier while drawing if you need a line, rectangle, ellipse, or arrow.
- Test the workflow with your actual application and presentation or recording setup before relying on it.

Paint for illustrations
Paint is the better fit when you want to create or edit a drawing. It is not a live screen-annotation layer.
Whiteboard for a separate canvas
Microsoft Whiteboard supports freeform drawing and collaborative sketching on a separate canvas. Choose it for brainstorming, rather than for placing marks over another desktop application.
