For most adult guests, choose a raised queen air mattress with a built-in AC pump if you have clear floor space and a nearby outlet. A 18- to 22-inch profile is generally easier to enter and leave than a low bed, while a twin or lower model is easier to move and store. No inflatable mattress is guaranteed to feel exactly like a conventional bed, and every model can lose some air through temperature changes, tiny leaks or valve problems.
Good Housekeeping’s 2026 testing of 15 air mattresses, combined with current manufacturer specifications, supports five useful choices rather than twelve independently proven “best” winners. The guide below separates laboratory and at-home findings from manufacturer claims, identifies the exact variant where specifications differ, and shows how to set up, sleep on, deflate and store a temporary bed safely.

Start with the room, not the marketing name. Measure the usable floor area with doors, wardrobes and walkways open, then choose the smallest size that gives the guest enough sleeping width. A queen is approximately 60 by 80 inches; twin and full sizes leave more circulation space. Raised beds are easier for many adults to use, but their folded package is usually bulkier.
| Model or family | Evidence and positioning | Height and pump details | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoundAsleep Dream Series | Good Housekeeping’s best overall among its 2026 tested picks; flocked surface and strong comfort feedback | Queen reported at 19 inches; automatic-stop built-in pump; under four minutes to inflate in testing | Some online reviewers reported gradual air loss; confirm size and current valve design |
| Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort | Good Housekeeping’s value pick; a 22-inch version was considered tall and easy to enter | Tested queen took about 4.5 minutes; multiple heights and pump configurations exist | Do not assume every Dura-Beam variant has the same capacity or dimensions |
| Serta Raised with Never Flat Pump | Good Housekeeping’s everyday-use pick; strong puncture-resistance results in testing | 18-inch height; dual-pump system maintains preset firmness | Testers found the material noisy; allow an outlet for both pumps |
| King Koil Luxury Raised | Good Housekeeping’s built-in-pump pick; fast setup and pack-away in its review | Variants from 13 to 20 inches; air coils, flocked fabric and built-in pillow | The pillow is not a substitute for a normal pillow; verify the exact height |
| Intex Queen Supreme Air-flow, SKU 64490ND | Current manufacturer-listed option; no independent comfort test located | 203 × 152 × 51 cm (about 80 × 60 × 20 inches), built-in pump, stated 4.5-minute inflation | Manufacturer lists 272 kg maximum capacity, carry bag and repair patch; regional details can vary |
The first four rows reflect Good Housekeeping’s 2026 Textiles Lab testing and additional consumer feedback. The Intex Supreme Air-flow row reflects the manufacturer’s 2026 listing only, so its comfort and long-term air retention remain unverified by that testing.

How to choose an inflatable guest bed
1. Match the footprint to the actual room
A queen sleeping surface can occupy roughly the same floor area as a small double bed, but the pump, bedding and walking clearance add to the practical footprint. Use painter’s tape to mark the mattress outline before delivery. Leave a path to the door and avoid placing the bed where a door, drawer or radiator must open into it. In a narrow room, a twin can be more hospitable than a queen that blocks circulation.
Check the listed dimensions for the precise regional SKU. “Queen” is not a guarantee of identical width, height or packed size across a product family. The Intex Essential Rest listing, for example, gives approximately 60 × 80 × 18 inches for its US 18-inch queen, while the Supreme Air-flow listing uses metric dimensions and a 51 cm height.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Decide whether raised height is worth the storage cost
Good Housekeeping reported that beds around 18 inches or higher tended to receive higher comfort ratings and were easier for many testers to get on and off. That height is useful for older guests or anyone who dislikes kneeling close to the floor. The trade-off is a larger folded package and more effort when moving the mattress through stairs or a cupboard. A 13-inch model can be a sensible compromise when storage space is tight.
3. Choose a pump that fits the room
A built-in AC pump keeps the pump with the mattress and usually makes inflation and deflation straightforward. It also requires a suitable outlet and produces noticeable noise during setup. Confirm that the control allows both inflation and deflation; some units require the valve to be opened manually for the final pack-away. If your only outlet is far away, measure the safe cable route rather than running a cord across a walkway.
A dual-pump design can maintain pressure while someone sleeps. The Serta model’s “Never Flat” system uses one pump for inflation and a second to make pressure adjustments at preset firmness levels. An external pump can work in a room without a convenient built-in unit, but it adds a separate item to store and may be louder. Good Housekeeping’s Coleman Double-High SupportRest inflated in under two minutes and did not lose air overnight in its tests, yet its external pump was loud and the source positioned it primarily for camping.

4. Separate comfort evidence from capacity claims
Independent test observations tell you how a sample felt, sounded and performed under that test’s conditions. Manufacturer capacity figures describe the specified model and region; they are not a promise that two people of any combined weight will feel equally supported. Use the exact maximum-capacity statement for your SKU and keep the load centered. Never infer an individual safe weight limit by simply dividing a two-person figure in half.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →5. Plan for pack-away before the first guest arrives
Measure the cupboard or loft hatch, not just the mattress’s sleeping surface. Look for a carry bag, packed dimensions and a practical deflation method. A tall queen may be comfortable for a weekend but frustrating if it must be folded every morning. If you host frequently, a model that deflates through its own pump can save more time than a slightly softer or firmer surface.
The best-supported choices
SoundAsleep Dream Series: strongest all-round tested choice
Good Housekeeping named the SoundAsleep Dream Series its best overall pick after testing. Its queen sample reached a 19-inch height and inflated in under four minutes. The flocked top is intended to reduce sliding, and the automatic-stop built-in pump limits the need to stand over the valve during setup. Testers described the bed as comfortable and supportive.
That result is a test finding, not a guarantee for every unit or sleeper. Some online reviewers reported gradual air loss over time, so check the mattress during the first few nights and inspect the valve if the surface becomes noticeably softer. Choose it when you want a raised, ready-to-use queen and have outlet access, but keep a repair patch compatible with the material.
Intex Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort: value-oriented family with important variants
Good Housekeeping selected the Dura-Beam Deluxe Comfort as its value pick. Its tested queen took about 4.5 minutes to inflate, and reviewers found a 22-inch version tall and comfortable to enter. The family is sold in more than one height, so the name alone does not identify the dimensions, capacity or pump arrangement.

Intex separately lists a US 18-inch Queen Essential Rest variant at approximately 60 × 80 × 18 inches, with a built-in pump, about four-minute inflation and a 600 lb maximum capacity. The manufacturer describes that listing as “Approximate inflation time is 4 mins” and “Max weight capacity 600 lbs.” Verify that the retailer’s model number matches the specification you intend to use; do not transfer the 600 lb figure to another Dura-Beam product.
Serta Raised Air Mattress with Never Flat Pump: for repeated overnight use
The Serta Raised model is Good Housekeeping’s everyday-use pick. Its 18-inch height offers a bed-like entry point without the bulk of the tallest designs. The review describes a dual-pump arrangement that automatically adjusts pressure and offers preset firmness levels, useful when a mattress is left inflated for several nights.
Good Housekeeping also reported strong puncture-resistance results. Some testers found the material noisy, especially when turning, so it may be a poor choice for a light sleeper in a quiet room. Position it on a smooth surface and keep the pump accessible for a firmness adjustment rather than burying it under bedding.
King Koil Luxury Raised: quick built-in-pump setup
Good Housekeeping chose the King Koil Luxury Raised as its built-in-pump pick, citing fast setup and pack-away. The design uses air coils, a flocked sleeping surface and model variants ranging from 13 to 20 inches. A built-in pillow is convenient for travel or a short stay, but the review explicitly says it does not replace a normal pillow; provide proper head support for adult guests.
Select the height by storage and mobility needs. The 20-inch version favors easy entry, while a 13-inch version is easier to carry and fold. Confirm that the listing’s dimensions and pump match the variant, because specifications can change within a family.

Intex Queen Supreme Air-flow, SKU 64490ND: a current listed alternative
Intex’s 2026 listing for SKU 64490ND gives a 203 × 152 × 51 cm footprint, a 51 cm height, approximately 4.5-minute inflation, a built-in pump and a 272 kg maximum capacity. It includes a carry bag and repair patch. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent comfort or air-retention results, and regional model details can differ.
This option makes sense when the listed capacity, included repair patch and carry bag fit your priorities. Treat the stated inflation time as an estimate under the manufacturer’s conditions, and check the exact regional manual before relying on the pump’s deflation function.
Other names you may see in roundups
Ideal Home’s 2026 roundup also surfaced Silentnight Extra High, Silentnight Deluxe with foot pump, Bestway Flocked, Bestway Flocked with mains pump, Yawn Self-Inflating and Intex Kidz Travel Bed. The roundup reports different pump types and sizes, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, current specification and independent comfort test for each model. Consider them leads for further checking rather than twelve separate winners.
Recommended Free Tools
For any additional listing, confirm five items on the exact product page: adult sleeping size, inflated height, pump type and power requirement, maximum capacity, and packed dimensions. Also check the manual for indoor use, repair materials and whether the supplied pump can deflate the bed.
Set up a temporary guest bed correctly
- Clear and inspect the area. Remove toys, screws, pet items and anything with a sharp edge. Check the floor for grit and look above the bed for hot lamps, heaters or radiator valves.
- Lay down the mattress before inflating. Orient the valve and pump so they remain reachable, and keep the electrical lead away from the walking path.
- Inflate in an open space. Use the built-in pump or the specified external pump. Stop at the recommended firmness; do not continue until the surface is drum-tight.
- Allow the material to settle. Vinyl and welded seams can stretch during the first inflation. Recheck firmness after several minutes and add only the amount permitted by the manual.
- Add bedding without covering the pump. A fitted sheet can reduce sliding and protect the surface. Use a mattress protector only if it fits without pulling on the seams.
- Test the sleeping position. Sit on the edge, lie in the center and check that the bed does not touch a wall or furniture as the guest turns.
- Explain the controls. Show the guest the firmness control, emergency shutoff and safe route to the bathroom. Keep the manual and any patch where you can find them.
How to reduce overnight softening and find leaks
A small change in firmness is not automatically a puncture. Cooler nighttime air contracts, and a newly stretched mattress can feel softer after its first use. Top up only to the manual’s recommended level; over-inflation can stress seams and make the surface less comfortable.
Best Value
- ✔ FIBER-TECH BEAM CONSTRUCTION – Comprised of thousands of high-strength polyester fibers that provide enhanced comfort, stability and support; Fiber-Tech Beam Construction can withstand more weight and pressure without losing its comfort or stability
- ✔ DURABILITY – Unlike traditional air beds that tend to sink or dip over time, our 10" raised Dura-Beam Air Mattresse is designed to withstand the weight of the sleeper without sagging or losing its shape
- ✔ 2-IN-1 VALVE – The Dura-Beam Standard Classic Downy Air Mattress has a 2-in-1 valve with extra wide opening that allows for easy inflation and deflation (Air pump sold separately)
- ✔ VELVETY SLEEPING SURFACE – The air mattress features a velvety sleeping surface that is not only soft and comfortable, but also easy to clean; this makes it an ideal choice for use as a guest bed or for camping trips
- ✔ STRETCH – At first inflation the material will STRETCH, which is sometimes misinterpreted as leaking; You will sense a loss of pressure, that's just the bed stretching, simply re-inflate the bed again; the bed will fully settle within 2-3 nights
- If the bed softens immediately: check that the inflation valve cap is fully seated and that the pump hose has been removed or closed as directed.
- If one area sinks: move bedding aside and inspect the underside, seam lines and valve for a hiss. Follow the manufacturer’s leak-test and patch procedure; do not use an incompatible adhesive.
- If the pump stops early: confirm the outlet, plug and control setting, then let the motor cool if the manual specifies a duty cycle.
- If the surface becomes noisy: reduce movement between the mattress and floor with a clean rug or thin protective layer, while ensuring it cannot slide or trap heat.
- If the bed loses air repeatedly: stop using it for guests until the leak is repaired or the mattress is replaced. A patch is appropriate only for damage the manual says is repairable.
Deflate, fold and store it without damage
- Remove bedding and let the mattress cool to room temperature.
- Open the specified deflation valve or select the pump’s deflate setting. Do not kneel on the mattress or force air out through a closed valve.
- Wipe moisture and dust from the flocked surface and underside. A completely dry surface prevents mildew in storage.
- Fold along the original seams where possible, keeping the pump and cord from being sharply bent.
- Place the mattress, cable and repair materials in the carry bag. Store it off the floor in a dry cupboard away from heaters, sunlight, rodents and sharp tools.
Raised beds generally take more folding effort than low beds because there is more material and internal structure. If you cannot lift the packed weight comfortably, choose a smaller size or ask for help rather than dragging the package over a stair edge.
Safety rules every host should follow
Never use an air mattress for an infant
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that infants can suffocate on air mattresses or become trapped between a mattress and a wall or bed frame. Its safety notice states: “Never place infants ages 15 months old and younger to sleep on an inflatable air mattress.” The notice prints 40 infant suffocation deaths in the last five years; that figure belongs to the notice and is not a current surveillance count. Use a compliant crib or play yard for an infant instead.
Keep the bed clear of hazards
Follow the product manual for age, weight, indoor use and electrical requirements. Keep the mattress away from radiators, heaters, candles and hot pipes. Do not place it against a wall where a sleeper could become wedged, and do not let children jump on it. Keep pets’ claws, scissors, toys and other sharp objects away from the surface.
Use capacity and position responsibly
Use only the maximum capacity printed for the exact model and region. Center sleepers so weight is distributed across the air chambers, and inspect the floor after moving the bed. A mattress that shifts toward a door or radiator is a setup problem, not a firmness problem.
A practical decision guide
| Your priority | Most suitable direction | Reason and compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Easy entry for older adults | 18- to 22-inch raised model | Higher edge is easier to sit on; packed size and weight increase |
| Small bedroom or frequent moving | Twin or 13-inch model | Leaves a walkway and stores more easily; less bed-like entry |
| Several nights of use | Dual-pump pressure-maintenance design | Can correct pressure automatically; may add motor noise |
| No separate equipment to lose | Built-in AC pump | One package and simple setup; needs an outlet and produces setup noise |
| Lowest purchase-risk based on testing | One of the four Good Housekeeping picks | Independent test observations exist, but no result guarantees every unit |
| Need a carry bag and patch included | Check the listed Intex Supreme Air-flow package | Those inclusions are manufacturer claims; comfort was not independently tested in the cited evidence |
For a typical guest room with a clear floor and outlet, the SoundAsleep Dream Series or a verified Intex Dura-Beam variant offers the most straightforward starting point. Choose the Serta when maintaining pressure across several nights matters more than quiet movement, the King Koil when quick pack-away and height choice matter, and the Intex Supreme Air-flow when its exact regional specifications and included accessories meet your needs.
