The best interior design app depends on the job you need done. Use Planner 5D when you need a measured floor plan and 2D/3D inspection, IKEA Kreativ when you are choosing IKEA furniture for a real room, Houzz for inspiration and product-in-room visualization, Morpholio Board for polished mood boards and sourcing presentations, and Room Planner for a straightforward 2D/3D layout workflow. None is a universal winner, and the available evidence describes publisher features rather than independent performance testing.
This guide separates those workflows so you can choose an app that matches the decisions you actually need to make: measuring space, testing a product, developing a look, or presenting a complete concept.

Quick comparison: which app fits your project?
| App | Best fit | Primary visualization | Catalog or sourcing scope | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Planner 5D | Measured floor plans and detailed room design | Manual 2D plan with 3D view, rendering and other listed tools | General room furnishings | Feature availability can vary by device, app version and plan. The listing describes a limited free tier and paid premium access; current prices are not fixed here. |
| IKEA Kreativ | Previewing IKEA furniture and décor in your room | Room scanning and virtual product placement | IKEA products | IKEA Canada documents scanning on LiDAR-equipped devices. Kitchen design is limited; IKEA directs users to its separate kitchen planner for a full kitchen project. |
| Houzz | Inspiration and shopping-oriented product visualization | Product placement in a room photo, as described in a 2016 announcement | Products presented through Houzz’s shop | The cited View in My Room evidence is historical. Check the current app and platform before relying on a specific feature. |
| Morpholio Board | Mood boards, furniture selections and client presentations | Image collage and page layout | Product imagery plus furniture and sourcing lists | Publisher documentation identifies support for iPad, iPhone and Mac. It is not evidenced as a precision floor-plan tool. |
| Room Planner | Quick room layouts in 2D and 3D | 2D/3D room views | Room-layout design workflow | The description comes from a Planner 5D company roundup published in August 2026, not independent comparative testing. Features vary by platform and subscription. |
Choose by the decision you need to make
Start with the output, not the app name. A floor plan answers “Will this arrangement fit?” A product preview answers “How might this sofa or cabinet look here?” A mood board answers “Do these colors, materials and pieces belong together?” Those are different questions, so a tool optimized for one can feel inadequate for another.
- Need dimensions, walls and circulation? Begin with Planner 5D. Room Planner can also handle a layout in 2D and 3D, but the available description is less detailed.
- Buying IKEA furniture and want to see it in your own space? Use IKEA Kreativ. Its catalog focus is deliberate rather than a weakness.
- Collecting ideas or checking a product against a room photo? Houzz is the relevant option in this shortlist, but confirm that the current version still offers the exact View in My Room behavior you want.
- Preparing a client presentation or a design concept? Morpholio Board is the strongest match because its documented workflow combines collage, layouts, product imagery and sourcing lists.
- Want a fast visual layout before committing to detailed measurements? Room Planner may be sufficient, provided its current platform and subscription support the features you need.
Do not treat a rendered image or augmented preview as proof that an item will fit. Only a dimensioned plan, checked against the product’s real specifications and the room’s constraints, can answer that question reliably.
#1 Best Overall
1. Planner 5D: best for measured plans and 2D/3D inspection
What it does
Planner 5D’s current product description centers on building a floor plan by adding walls, doors and windows, furnishing the rooms, and switching between 2D and 3D views. It also lists saving and sharing projects, rendering and AI-related tools. That combination makes it the most complete choice here when the first task is spatial planning rather than collecting inspiration.
How to use it for a real room
- Measure before you draw. Record each wall, opening and fixed obstruction. A tape measure is optional but useful for collecting those dimensions; no particular brand or model is required.
- Create the shell. Add the room’s walls, then place doors and windows in their actual positions. Include columns, fireplaces, radiators or other elements that affect furniture placement.
- Enter dimensions and check the plan. Compare the digital measurements with your notes before adding furniture. A visually attractive plan built on incorrect dimensions can mislead you.
- Furnish in 2D first. Use the plan view to test clearances, walking paths and door swings. Switch to 3D to inspect height, sight lines and the relationship between pieces.
- Save and share the project. Sharing is useful when a household or design team needs to review the same arrangement, but confirm which collaboration or export functions your current plan includes.
- Use rendering or AI tools as presentation aids. Treat the result as a visualization of the plan, not as a measurement certificate or construction drawing.
Free and paid access
The current App Store listing distinguishes a limited free version from paid premium access. It does not make a stable, universal price chart appropriate here: plan terms can change by region, platform and date. Before starting a project, open the live listing or in-app subscription screen and confirm what the free tier allows, especially for catalog items, rendering, exports and saved projects.

Device and audience caveats
Planner 5D states that feature availability may depend on your device, app version and plan. Check those variables before promising a client a particular tool. The company’s 2026 product page displays “100M+ Global users,” while its App Store listing says “400M+ interior design projects created.” These are separate publisher-reported marketing figures: one counts users and the other projects, so they are not comparable measures and are not independent quality ratings.
2. IKEA Kreativ: best for previewing IKEA products in your space
What it does
IKEA US describes IKEA Kreativ as a free virtual room designer for viewing IKEA furniture and décor in your own space. IKEA Canada says it can be used in the app or on IKEA.ca and documents room scanning on devices equipped with LiDAR. The result is a focused product-selection workflow: you are testing IKEA pieces in a room, not designing an unrestricted catalog from every retailer.
A practical IKEA Kreativ workflow
- Confirm your device and access route. Choose the app or the IKEA website experience available in your region. If you plan to scan, check whether your device meets the documented LiDAR requirement.
- Prepare the room. Clear enough visual clutter for the scan or room image to represent walls and major furniture accurately. Keep the original room measurements available for a second check.
- Capture or select the room. Follow the current scanning or image instructions shown by IKEA. The exact steps and supported hardware can change, so use the live in-product guidance.
- Place IKEA products. Try combinations of furniture and décor, checking proportions, circulation and conflicts with doors, vents and outlets.
- Verify dimensions separately. A virtual placement shows an intended visual arrangement; it does not replace checking the product specification and measuring your room.
- Switch tools for a full kitchen. IKEA Canada says kitchen possibilities in Kreativ are limited and recommends IKEA’s separate kitchen planner for comprehensive kitchen design.
Where its catalog focus helps—and where it does not
If your shortlist is primarily IKEA, a constrained catalog can make decisions faster because the products, finishes and combinations are relevant to the purchase. If you are comparing several retailers or planning built-ins, use a general floor-plan tool alongside it. IKEA Kreativ should not be presented as an all-brand interior-design catalog.
3. Houzz: best for inspiration and product-in-room visualization
What the documented feature was intended to do
A Houzz company announcement from February 17, 2016 described View in My Room as a way to place shop products in a user’s room photo. The announcement said the feature could preview more than 1.8 million Houzz Shop products at that time. That number is a dated company claim, not a current catalog count.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn the same announcement, Houzz president and cofounder Alon Cohen said, “View in My Room helps people bring design ideas to life and instantly buy the best products for their homes, whether they’re working on a large-scale renovation or simply looking for the perfect item to complete the look of a room.” The sentence explains the feature’s intended role; it is not an independent assessment of accuracy or usefulness.
How to use Houzz without overtrusting a preview
- Collect reference images first. Save rooms, colors, layouts and products that express the direction you are considering.
- Check the current feature. Because the cited technical evidence is from 2016, open the present app or platform and verify whether View in My Room, its supported devices and its product-placement behavior are still available.
- Use a room photo for visual context. A photo helps answer whether a style, color or silhouette feels compatible with your room.
- Confirm product facts. Check current dimensions, finish, availability and return terms on the live product page. A photo overlay cannot establish those details.
- Move to a measured plan for construction decisions. If the choice affects clearances, cabinetry, lighting or plumbing, record the actual dimensions in a floor-plan tool before ordering.
Best use and main limitation
Houzz is most useful at the inspiration and product-shortlisting stage. The evidence here supports that role, not a current guarantee of a particular augmented-reality implementation, platform parity or catalog size.
4. Morpholio Board: best for mood boards and sourcing presentations
What it does
Morpholio describes Board as a visual composition and presentation tool with image collage and layout controls, product imagery, furniture lists and sourcing lists. Its product page identifies support for iPad, iPhone and Mac. This is the right category of app when you need to explain a design direction, compare materials or hand a client a coherent list of proposed pieces.
Build a board that can support a decision
- Define the room and objective. Label the board with the room, design direction and decisions it must support, such as paint, upholstery, lighting or furniture.
- Gather reference imagery. Add room inspiration, material textures, colors and product images. Keep a note of the source and the exact product name for anything you may specify.
- Create a visual hierarchy. Give the main furniture or color story the largest placements, then use smaller images for accents and details. Layout tools are most valuable when they make relationships obvious.
- Add furniture and sourcing lists. Record quantities, finishes, dimensions and supplier information wherever the current app workflow allows. A sourcing list is more useful than an attractive collage with no purchasing trail.
- Present alternatives separately. Make clear which items are selected, optional or still under consideration so a client does not mistake an inspiration image for a final specification.
- Validate the chosen pieces in a plan. Board communicates intent; it does not establish room clearances. Pair it with a measured layout before ordering large or fixed items.
Why it is not a floor-plan substitute
The documented strengths are collage, layout, product imagery and sourcing presentation. The available evidence does not establish precise wall construction, dimension entry or 2D/3D inspection as its purpose. Choose it for communication and specification, not for proving that a sectional will pass through a doorway.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Room Planner: best for a straightforward 2D/3D layout
What is established
A Planner 5D roundup published in August 2026 includes Room Planner and describes room layouts in 2D and 3D. That makes it a reasonable option for exploring arrangements when you want a visual plan without committing immediately to a presentation-board workflow.
How to evaluate it before committing
- Check the live listing for your platform. The roundup warns that features vary by platform and subscription. Confirm support for your phone, tablet, computer or operating system.
- Test the basic room shell. Create one representative room and see whether the available tools let you enter the dimensions and openings you need.
- Compare 2D and 3D views. Use 2D to reason about placement and 3D to inspect the visual result. Do not infer measurement accuracy from a polished rendering.
- Review subscription boundaries. Identify which furniture, exports, saves or rendering functions are included before you build a large project.
- Keep a measured backup. Save your room dimensions and product specifications outside the app so a platform or plan change does not erase the basis of your decisions.
How it differs from Planner 5D in this shortlist
Both names appear in the same company ecosystem, but the available description for Planner 5D is more explicit about constructing floor plans with walls, doors and windows, switching views, saving and sharing, rendering and AI tools. The Room Planner description is narrower: 2D and 3D room layouts. That is enough for a modest arrangement exercise, but not evidence of equal feature depth.
Rank #4
Accuracy: what these apps can and cannot prove
Interior-design apps mix several kinds of visualization, and they should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
| Workflow | Useful question | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Manual floor plan | Can furniture fit within the walls and circulation paths? | Actual room dimensions, door swings, window locations, ceiling height and product specifications |
| Room scan | How might a retailer’s products look in this captured space? | Scan compatibility, measurement accuracy, product dimensions and installation constraints |
| Product placement in a photo | Does the item’s style or color suit the room? | Scale, finish under your lighting, current availability and real clearances |
| Image collage or mood board | Do the proposed colors, materials and pieces form a coherent concept? | Budget, dimensions, lead times, construction details and a measured layout |
For any app, measure fixed conditions first: wall lengths, ceiling height, door and window openings, radiator or vent positions, outlet locations and the path used to bring furniture into the room. Then compare those notes with the manufacturer’s current product dimensions.
Free tiers, subscriptions and changing features
“Free” does not mean that every tool or catalog item is included. Planner 5D explicitly separates a limited free version from premium access. IKEA Kreativ is described by IKEA US as free, but it remains tied to IKEA’s product ecosystem. Room Planner’s available features can vary by subscription, according to the company roundup. Morpholio Board and Houzz should be checked in their current listings for the functions and platform access you require.
Before you invest time in a project, make a short checklist:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Easy to read text
- This product will be an excellent pick for you
- Is the app available in your country and on your device?
- Can the free tier save or export the result you need?
- Are the furniture, rendering, scanning or presentation tools behind a subscription?
- Will a project remain editable if you change devices or cancel a plan?
- Are the product catalog and prices current for your region?
A practical multi-app workflow
You do not have to force one app to perform every job. A sensible sequence is:
- Measure the room. Use a tape measure or another suitable measuring method and record fixed elements.
- Build the spatial baseline. Use Planner 5D, or evaluate Room Planner, to test furniture footprints and circulation in 2D and 3D.
- Shortlist retailer-specific pieces. If the room will use IKEA products, preview them in IKEA Kreativ. For broader inspiration or shop products, check the current Houzz experience.
- Develop the visual direction. Assemble colors, materials and candidate products in Morpholio Board, including sourcing information.
- Return to the measured plan. Confirm every selected item against dimensions, openings, delivery paths and installation requirements before purchasing.
This sequence keeps inspiration and presentation from being mistaken for construction-level certainty while still allowing quick visual experimentation.

- Choose Planner 5D if dimensions, walls, doors, windows and a 2D/3D inspection are central to the project.
- Choose IKEA Kreativ if your decision is mainly which IKEA furniture and décor work in your room, and your device supports the scanning workflow you want.
- Choose Houzz if you are gathering ideas or want to investigate product visualization, but verify the current View in My Room feature before depending on it.
- Choose Morpholio Board if the deliverable is a mood board, product concept or sourcing presentation for yourself or a client.
- Choose Room Planner if you want a relatively focused 2D/3D layout tool and its current platform and subscription terms meet your needs.
These recommendations are workflow-based rather than a universal ranking. The available material includes publisher descriptions, an Apple app collection and a historical Houzz announcement; it does not include hands-on testing or independently measured quality statistics.
