The best jewelry-making chain depends on the piece you are making: its link style, metal, dimensions, finished length, and how it will connect to a pendant or clasp. There is no universal best chain. Fit chain to the pendant, clasp, and intended use
- Measure the opening. Check the pendant bail or connecting loop’s inside opening and compare it with the chain’s width and thickness. A style name alone cannot confirm fit.
- Check every connection. If you will use jump rings or a clasp, verify that the links and findings can be connected securely and that their stated materials suit the design.
- Plan the finished length. Decide where the necklace or bracelet should sit, then account for the clasp and any extension or finishing components. Supplier-listed lengths are options, not a universal fit guide.
- Match scale and construction. Consider how the chain looks beside the pendant and whether the actual item’s specifications suit the way the piece will be worn.
- Choose a format and quantity. Buy finished chain for a ready-to-wear length; choose by-the-foot or bulk chain if you need custom cuts or will assemble the ends.
Finishing a custom chain
A custom-cut chain may need jump rings and a clasp. Cutting and assembly tools depend on the chain material and construction, so use tools appropriate to that item rather than assuming one cutter or plier suits every chain.
