For most beginners, 3-ply or braided cotton cord is a forgiving choice for learning knots because it is sturdier than delicate single-twist cord. If you want soft, brushable fringe, choose single-twist cotton instead and handle it gently. Which macrame cord should a beginner choose?

Which fiber should you use?
Soft cotton is a practical default for practice: the beginner guidance describes thicker 3–5 mm cotton as easier to work with than yarn, jute, twine, or hemp. Other fibers can suit a particular design. Consider jute when you want a coarse rustic texture; yarn, twine, or hemp can also be used, but follow a pattern written for that material where possible because cord construction and thickness affect knots and length.
How much cord should you buy?
A rough estimate from Macrame for Beginners is about four times the finished project length for each working cord. If each cord is folded in half for a Lark’s Head mounting, that estimate becomes about eight times the finished length per cord. This is a planning heuristic, not an exact formula: knot density, thickness, and construction change consumption. Use the pattern’s quantity when provided and allow extra for practice and trimming.
